SUMMARY:Puss N Boots w/ Norah Jones\, Sasha Dobson & Catherine Popper
DESCRIPTION:IN 2008\, NORAH JONES\, SASHA DOBSON\, AND CATHERINE POPPER FORMED PUSS N BOOTS. \nInitially it was a vehicle for Jones and Dobson to play music together and try new things\, with Popper joining on bass shortly after. The trio played various New York clubs\, with a repertoire anchored in Americana\, country\, folk\, pop and rock. The band became an outlet for Jones\, Dobson and Popper to switch instruments\, and allowed them to showcase a different side of themselves than in their various solo and side projects. \nIn 2013\, some five years after the group began playing\, they signed with Blue Note Records and set out to assemble their debut record. Comprised of originals and covers\, studio recordings and live performances\, that debut was called No Fools\, No Fun. Released in the summer of 2014\, it was supported by a tour of the U.S. \nIn 2019\, the trio took the stage at the MusiCares charity event honoring Person of the Year Award recipient Dolly Parton\, and performed Parton’s “The Grass Is Blue”. Later that year Jones\, Dobson\, and Popper released their holiday album Dear Santa\, followed by their 2nd full length album Sister in 2020.

Currently an eightpiece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon\, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. Singer DD Bastos brings her sweet and soulful vocals and adds another bright new dimension to the jazzy\, jump-blues musical roots. Along with bassist John Turner\, trumpeter Chris Pratt\, drummer Mike Coffey\, keyboardist Jeff Ceasrine\, baritone and tenor saxophonist Craig Thomas\, and tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille\, Roomful keeps on rockin’ year after year! \nRoomful of Blues\, according to DownBeat magazine\, “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping\, horn-heavy\, hard-edged blues and R&B\, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.” Since 1967\, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing\, rock ‘n’ roll\, jump\, blues and soul has earned it five Grammy Award nominations and a slew of other accolades\, including seven Blues Music Awards. With a non-stop performance schedule for over 55 years\, Roomful of Blues has earned critical\, popular and radio success and a legion of fans around the globe. including the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll for “Best Blues Band”. \nD.D. Bastos – Vocals DD is no stranger to the stage. She began singing in church at the age of 5 years old. Music has always been her passion. D.D. earned second chair in the All-Eastern Honors Ensemble representing Massachusetts which garnered her a scholarship. After college D.D. began performing with local bands throughout NE which led to the inception of her band DD & The Road Kings. Her work put her closely associated with the fraternity that is; Roomful of Blues\, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones\, The Broadcasters and the dozens of splinter groups who have branched off — shaping many other New England Blues bands. Certainly\, when three of them show up on D.D. and the Road Kings’ album Lover Bird\, which was well received by critics and fans alike\, there is a common thread that can be traced back to the ’60s Blues revival. D.D. is also a Choral Director in the public school system with 20+ years as a private music teacher. Her love of singing is what fuels her soulful and powerful performances. \nChris Vachon – Guitar Chris is a true multi-talent. His prowess as a guitar slinger is well documented\, and his strengths as a producer and songwriter grow from album to album. He produced the band’s nine most recent albums—There Goes the Neighborhood (1998)\, Watch You When You Go (2001)\, Live at Wolf Trap (2002) the Grammy nominated That’s Right! (2003)\, and Standing Room Only (2004)\, “Raisin’ A Ruckus” (2008)\, Hook\, Line & Sinker (2011)\, 45 Live (2013) and In A Roomful of Blues (2020) after co-producing all of Roomful’s other albums recorded in the ’90s. Chris’s songs— such as “Turn It On! Turn It Up!\,” “Running Out of Time\,” “She’ll Be So Fine\,” “Blue\, Blue World\,” “Dynamite” and “Keep on Rockin'” have become firm favorites in AAA and bluesradio formats\, bringing many new fans into the Roomful fold. \nJohn Turner – Upright and Electric Bass A veteran of the New England jazz scene\, bassist John Turner has performed and recorded with just about everybody–specifically the Either/Orchestra\,Charlie Kohlhase\, Scott Hamilton\, Roswell Rudd\, Lee Konitz\, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, members of Ornette Coleman’s band\, and Magic Dick-Jay Geils and Blues Time to name a few. John’s rock solid bottom is the essential element of the swing groove which Roomful is renowned for. \nJeff Ceasrine – PianoOrgan Originally from New York\, Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed throughout the New England area on keyboards\, rhythm guitar\, percussion\, and background vocals for over 25 years. He has worked in several long-standing acts in Rhode Island (blues\, jazz\, and swing) and has played many one-off gigs with various bands throughout the region. A frequent guest and on-call keyboard player with Roomful of Blues since 2008 (appearing on their recent “In a Roomful of Blues” CD)\, Jeff is comfortable with many different blues stylings. His influences include Pine Top Perkins\, Duke Ellington\, Fats Waller\, Lonnie Smith\, Otis Spann and Jimmy Smith..” \nMike Coffey – Drums From Newport Rhode Island Mike Coffey spent 20 years performing with the US Navy band. Upon retirement he performed with local blues artist Chris Stoval Brown and other wellknown blues artist in the Boston area. As part of a weekly Jazz series he has performed with Mike Renzi and Grey Sargent both members of Tony Bennett’s band and other renown jazz artist. He also performs with 50s doo wop group”The Diamonds” when they perform in New England. He studied with renown drum instructors Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffee. Known for his versatility and ability to enhance any group he performs with he been a welcome new member of Roomful of Blues. \nRich Lataille – Tenor and Alto Sax Rich joined Roomful in 1970 and was there at the beginning of what has become the most legendary horn section in contemporary blues. It was Rich’s interest in the swinging bands of the ’30s and ’40s that led Roomful to forge the distinctive sound that has become the band’s trademark. A man who can play both sides of the fence\, lyrically tender or blisteringly hot\, Rich has a big\, warm tone that is always jam-packed with feeling. His melodic inventiveness reflects the depth and breadth of his wide-ranging influences. Rich worked with various local and high- school bands before beginning his long-term relationship with Roomful. \nCraig Thomas – Baritone and Tenor Sax Craig was born in Washington DC and grew up in Maryland. At a young age Craig heard an early rock and roll instrumental “Wild Weekend” by the Rockin’ Rebels which inspired him to take up the saxophone. He moved to LA in his early 20s and played with the likes of Jim Messina of Loggins & Messina\, Les McCann\, Aretha Franklin\, the Stylistics\, Freda Payne\, Jermaine Jackson the R&B Bombers among many\, many others. Craig’s rich musical background is a welcome asset to the Roomful of Blues horn section. \nChristopher Pratt – Trumpet Chris is a native of Rhode Island and has performed throughout the New England area with various local and national acts for over forty years. SUMMARY:Delta Generators with Julie Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Real music by real people\, played live and recorded live. This best embodies the philosophy of\nestablished Boston band Delta Generators and their approach for their latest record ON & ON.\nIn an industry where technology has become the standard and intelligence has become artificial\,\nDelta Generators are keeping it real and will continue to do so going forward. All the songs on\nthis record were written\, arranged and rehearsed over a period of eight days and then recorded in\ntwo days at Power Station N.E. in Waterford\, CT by Evan Bakke\, best known for his work with\nWarren Haynes and Prince. The idea was to get together\, play and when something feels right\,\nwork it! No preconceived ideas as to what it should be. A journey of liberation\, inspiration and\nperspiration. Yeah\, Blues is the vehicle\, but their lifelong love of rock music is the fuel that\npowers it. \nBrothers Charlie and Rick O’Neal\, on guitar and bass respectively\, have been playing together\nsince their teenage years. Most notably as members of Benjamin Orr’s band\, former singer and\nbass player with The Cars. Sometimes they would go off and do other projects\, Charlie toured\nwith UK band Must and Rick played in Boston guitar hero Johnny A’s band\, but inevitably they\nwould play together again and again. Charlie had been playing in rock bands throughout\nhis early years\, but he was always a huge fan of Blues guitar. He spent years honing his abilities\nby playing along with records. When the opportunity presented itself for a Blues driven side\nproject\, he was all in. That moment altered his future\, placing him in the position to celebrate his\npassion for personal heroes like Elmore James\, Freddie King and Albert Collins. \nWhen the ensemble was first conceived\, a lover of R&B and Soul named Craig Rawding took\nthe mic as the original front man. Charlie O’Neal brought on his brother Rick as the bassist. And \nin 2007\, the Delta Generators were born. The initial drummer had to bail after a few months\, so\nup-and-coming percussionist Jeff Armstrong was brought into the fold. By 2008\, it was no\nlonger a side project\, and they captured the win at the Boston Blues Challenge. They went on to \nMemphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge where they almost took the top spot. \nFrom there the band went on to forge a solid place in the Boston Blues scene. They went on to\nrecord four records before Craig decided to leave the band in 2016. Enter Brian Templeton\, a\nfixture in the local scene since 1991. His band The Radio Kings had already recorded for two\nlabels\, and he had toured all across the U.S. and Europe with them and as a solo artist. A\nconsummate showman and lover of the spirit\, Brian was rooted in the rock music of his youth\nand was already a seasoned Blues Man. It was a perfect fit and the rest as they say is history.\n“Brian lifted the DGs to a new level with his showmanship and drive\,” says Charlie\, “I don’t\nthink the band would have continued if Brian hadn’t joined.” Brother Rick continues\, “Besides\nhis top-notch vocals\, Brian brought a powerful stage presence and killer harmonica playing to\nthe mix and his lyric writing is in a class all by itself.” \nThe new album is anything but vanilla. After all these years together\, the quartet has a voice and\nswagger that is all their own. The new repertoire is a pure collaboration that has captured what\nmakes this union of these four musicians so organic and pure in its creation. Drummer Jeff\nArmstrong shares\, “Unlike the previous record\, which was more of a compilation of great songs\,\nthis new record stands in itself as a complete cohesive work.” Guitarist Charlie O’Neal offers \, \n“ON & ON perfectly captures the live spirit of the band and is by far sonically superior to any of our previous albums.” \nDelta Generators love writing and recording but they live to play live. Making a connection with\ntheir fans is the most important part of it. As Templeton says. “Making a spiritual bond with the\npeople\, our fans\, is why we do what we do. There really is no other reason.”

SUMMARY:The Clements Brothers Present A Paul Simon Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Experience the timeless music of Paul Simon with The Clements Brothers in a captivating quartet tribute filled with soaring harmonies and exceptional musicianship. George Clements brings the music vividly to life\, drawing on his experience portraying Paul Simon in the national tour of The Simon & Garfunkel Story. \nThe Clements Brothers are George and Charles Clements\, identical twins from New England. They’ve been playing and writing music together for as long as they can remember and ‘The Clements Brothers’ marks their first project together since playing in the internationally touring grass-roots band\, ‘The Lonely Heartstring Band’ with whom they put out two albums on Rounder Records. With roots\, rock\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and classical influences\, George (on guitar) and Charles (on bass) aim to capture their singer-songwriter sensibilities in a unique blended voice\, at once enthralling and intimate\, groovy and serene. Their first album ‘Dandelion Breeze’ was released in 2023 on Plow Man Records and their sophomore record is set to be released in the Fall of 2026. The duo is a fusion of each brother’s unique musical journey\, and the result is music all its own\, filled with vocal harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity\, and a genuine love of song.

SUMMARY:Christian Sands
DESCRIPTION:Jazz history is filled with stirring torch songs and ballads — brilliant expressions of suffering after love has gone awry. The jazz record shelf even contains some classic album-long explorations of melancholy. But it’s hard to find precedent in pianist Christian Sands’ new Embracing Dawn\, his fifth full-length effort for Mack Avenue Records. \nSands’ LP is nothing less than a cinematic narration of the stages of grief\, crafted by one of jazz’s finest young composers. It’s a “breakup record\,” to be sure — composed while Sands was experiencing the hurt that only a sudden absence of love can deliver — but it’s so much more. In its thoughtfully assembled nine tracks are a group therapy session\, a guide to healing\, and an understanding that Sands’ deeply personal angst could apply to any person who has lost a partner\, a job\, a loved one\, an opportunity\, the list goes on. In other words\, Embracing Dawn is for everyone. \n“I actually tried not to write this record\,” Sands says with a laugh. “It was painful. I was going through heartbreak\, and I didn’t know what to do — and so I decided to put it all into music. But I knew I wasn’t alone in this feeling. So why not create a safe space for people to go when they’re having this feeling\, when they’re having these thoughts or questions?” \nEmbracing Dawn trails 2023’s acclaimed Christmas Stories and 2020’s GRAMMY-nominated Be Water. Following that album’s release\, the New York Times commented\, “Equipped with a crisp but forceful touch\, he seems always to be flowing in new directions\, integrating elements of prog rock\, gospel and Western classical into a forward-tumbling jazz conception.” Embracing Dawn furthers Sands’ uniquely cultivated jazz language\, where agile post-bop meets soulful bluesy tinges and gorgeous swells of strings. Sands’ love of classical orchestration\, he explains\, is rooted in his lifelong obsession with film. \nUltimately\, Sands’ sound and philosophy are informed by two of his most essential mentors: bass maestro Christian McBride\, who\, as Sands’ longtime employer\, taught him the importance of always being yourself; and the late piano legend Dr. Billy Taylor\, who stressed how crucial it is to connect jazz to a wide-ranging audience. “I want Embracing Dawn to be something you gravitate toward because of the story\,” Sands says.

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Winter: Tales of Wonder Through a Child’s Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Cantemus Chamber Chorus\, with 42 members from across the North Shore\, will present three concerts in December titled “Once Upon a Winter: Tales of Wonder Through a Child’s Eyes” in Newburyport\, Beverly\, and Gloucester. \nThe concerts feature Matthew Harris’s “A Child’s Christmas in Wales\,” based on the beloved holiday tale by Dylan Thomas. In addition\, the program will include a rich tapestry of contemporary and traditional repertoire from different cultures reflecting themes of wonder\, home\, darkness\, returning light\, and memory. The repertoire includes R. Murray Schafer’s “Snowforms; “Song for Yalda Night\,” an Iranian piece about the longest night of the year; the “Kang Ding Love Song\,” a Chinese folk song associated with the Winter Solstice; Morten Lauridsen’s “Lament for Pasiphaë;” traditional Hanukkah songs “Mi Y’Maleil” and “S’vivon;” Daniel Kantor’s “Night of Silence” and more. \nIn addition to accompanist Jeffrey Mead on piano\, joining Cantemus will be an 11-piece chamber orchestra and the Lexington Children’s Chorus (LCC)\, an auditioned choral ensemble for singers in grades 4-6. Founded by Artistic Director Allison Iannuzzi in 2019\, the LCC has collaborated with the Lexington Symphony Orchestra\, the Lexington High School Choral Program\, the Middlesex County Volunteer Fifes & Drums\, and other community arts partners. \nCantemus’ concerts will take place in Newburyport on Saturday\, December 5 at St. Paul’s Church\, 166 High St.; in Beverly on Saturday\, December 12 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 4 Ocean St.; and in Gloucester on Sunday\, December 13 at the Unitarian Universalist Church\, 10 Church St. All three performances are at 4:00 p.m. \nCantemus’ Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi said: “Across cultures and centuries\, the year’s longest nights have drawn people together to light candles\, gather around tables\, tell stories\, and sing.“ Though customs differ from place to place\, “they often spring from the same desires: for warmth\, for home\, for hope\, and for one another. This concert traces this shared story through the eyes of a child.” Allison Iannuzzi said\, “There is something truly special about experiencing the wonder of the winter season through a child’s eyes. The Children’s Chorus is delighted to collaborate with Cantemus to share music celebrating the beauty of winter traditions. We hope this music invites us all to rediscover the magic of the season and the shared experiences that unite us.” \nFor more information about the program and to purchase tickets\, visit www.cantemus.org/tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the door\, space permitting. \nCantemus gratefully acknowledges sponsorship support from Eastern Bank\, Institution for Savings\, and Rockland Trust\, and funding support from the Local Cultural Councils of Newbury\, Newburyport\, Rockport\, and West Newbury.
