SUMMARY:C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band
DESCRIPTION:3/6/25\nReserved Seats $30\nStanding $24\n7pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required \nClayton Joseph Chenier is Creole music royalty. His father\, the legendary Clifton Chenier\, invented the style of music we know today as Zydeco and was the first Creole musician to be recognized with a Grammy Award. \nC.J. joined his Father’s band on his 21st birthday. On the road his father showed him how to front a world class touring band\, teaching C.J.\, a multi-instrumentalist\, how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987 his son\, C.J.\, adopted the Red Hot Louisiana Band and recorded his debut album for the great American independent label Arhoolie Records. \nAttending a C.J. Chenier show is a transformative experience. You may come in tired and beat up just from living in this world – but you will leave renewed and happy. And that is the promise C.J. makes\, “You can’t come to my show and stay unhappy. You’re going to break a smile before too long. This is happy music.”

SUMMARY:Amythyst Kiah
DESCRIPTION:3/5/25\nReserved Seats $25\nStanding $20\n7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n18+\, Positive I.D. Required \nOn her new album Still + Bright\, Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter Amythyst Kiah explores the vast expanse of her inner world: her deep-rooted affinity for Eastern philosophies and spiritual traditions\, a near-mystical connection with the natural environment\, the life lessons learned in her formative years as a self-described “anime-nerd mall goth\,” and much more. Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift\, Green Day\, Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio\, Kiah’s second full-length for Rounder Records merges her revelatory storytelling with a darkly cinematic twist on the rootsy alt-rock of her 2021 breakthrough Wary + Strange—an LP that landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021 and drew acclaim from major outlets like Pitchfork. With its sonic palette encompassing everything from fuzzed-out guitars and industrial-leaning beats to gilded pedal steel and Kiah’s exquisitely graceful banjo work\, Still + Bright makes for a vital new addition to a body of work largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery. \nThe latest turn in a dynamic career that’s included joining Our Native Daughters (an all-women-of-color supergroup also featuring Rhiannon Giddens\, Leyla McCalla\, and Allison Russell)\, Still + Bright emerged from a deliberate transformation of the songwriting process Kiah adopted after composing her first song on a Fender acoustic at age 13. To that end\, the album marks her first time opening up her approach and working with co-writers\, including punk legend Tim Armstrong\, Sadler Vaden (a guitarist/vocalist for Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit)\, and former Pentatonix member Avi Kaplan. Although her third LP is an undeniable departure from the anguished emotionality of its predecessor (an album informed by losing her mother to suicide at age 17)\, Kiah imparts each track with a hypnotic intensity born from boldly stating her convictions. Revealing her rare ability to spin her fascinations into songs uncovering essential truths about human nature\, Still + Bright ultimately affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth.

SUMMARY:Race & Song: A Musical Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Reggie Harris | Alastair Moock \nTogether in musical conversation\, the duo explores complex issues of race\, class\, gender and history\, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. \n“dashing and extraordinary” – The Strad Magazine \nRace and Song was born in 2020 out of a deep bond and nearly 30-year friendship between veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours Reggie Harris and Alastair Moock. Together in musical conversation\, the two explore complex issues of race\, class\, gender\, and history\, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. One of Alastair and Reggie’s greatest strengths as a duo is their ability to meet audiences where they are\, adapting their conversation and musical repertoire for a wide range of ages and experiences. \nReggie and Alastair bring Race and Song to dozens of schools each year\, from elementary to high school. Through their interactive\, assembly-style program\, they explore what it means to live in one’s skin\, how to talk more productively about race\, and how our country’s past informs the present. Improvising together on songs like “Wade in the Water\,” “This Little Light of Mine\,” and original compositions\, the duo demonstrate the unique ability of music to express sorrow\, joy\, creativity\, and determination… A must-see program for anyone interested in booking race-conscious work for young people. \nFor adults who want to deepen their understanding of antiracism and get more comfortable talking about difficult subjects\, Race and Song is an invitation to listen\, learn\, and engage. Reggie and Alastair have performed together at theaters\, arts centers\, houses of worship\, libraries\, senior centers\, and universities nationwide\, modeling what productive interracial conversations about race can look like while swapping tunes and inviting audience participation in a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere. \nReggie Harris has traveled the world for over 40 years as a songwriter\, storyteller and lecturer using music and the spoken word to make an impact in education\, social and racial justice\, the environment\, faith and in human and civil rights. He is a teaching artist in the John F Kennedy Center’s CETA program\, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar\, and the Director of Music Education for the Living Legacy Project\, leading civil rights pilgrimages throughout the South. In 2021\, he received a lifetime Spirit of Folk Award from Folk Alliance International. \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter who has toured throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, and Asia\, performing at renowned events like the Newport Folk Festival and sharing the stage with acts like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, and Greg Brown. He’s also a Grammy nominated children’s musician\, social justice educator for all ages\, and co-founder of two antiracist music organizations\, The Opening Doors Project and Family Music Forward. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters” and The Washington Post says “every song is a gem.” \nConcert attendees are invited to a post-concert meet and greet with the artists. \nFree\, Reservations Encouraged

Returning to Rockport with her Black History Month program\, she blends Americana\, jazz and blues into a bold\, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest\, original lyrics. \n“rising folk music star” -Ann Powers\, NPR\n“Hopeful\, impassioned” – American Songwriter \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times. \n”Matthews began performing in 2010\, but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 New Song Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects—her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The Birchmere\, TheHamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout—An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern NorthCarolina by an A.M.E.preacher\, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few.“ Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make records as in a record of an event\,” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \n“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation\, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” — Ear Milk
