SUMMARY:Caspian
DESCRIPTION:Long-running cinematic rock band Caspian don’t want you to call their fifth album a “redemption\,” a “comeback\,” a “rise from the ashes\,” or any of the other sentiments that emerge when bands return from nearly five years of silence. “I’ve grown weary of reading about bands discuss the renewing\, rehabilitative properties their most recent [album] has had on them\,” says guitarist/keyboardist Philip Jamieson. “They incur corrosion\, come close to running out of gas\, descend into the dark abyss\, and finally emerge on the other side with a record that has given them crystal clear perspective and a confident path forward. On Circles is not that record.” \nInstead\, this majestic collision of post-rock\, metal\, shoegaze\, electronics\, noise\, minimalism and ambient music is an existential meditation\, an acceptance of the cyclical nature of both life and career. Recorded at Studio 4 in Conshohocken\, PA\, by producer Will Yip (Code Orange\, Defeater\, Quicksand\, Turnstile)\, On Circles marks the most organic writing and recording sessions in Caspian’s 15-year history. Together for four weeklong songwriting sessions\, the band (joined by propulsive new drummer Justin Forrest)\, opted for music gleaming with visceral impact instead of over-thought tangles\, over-arching concepts and drawn-out crescendos \nOn Circles is an art-rock record swirling with fourth-world saxophones\, dubby textures\, 7/8 rhythms and hard-sawed cello from Jo Quail (Myrkyr\, Winterfylleth\, Poppy Ackroyd). The band stretches out to make room for guitarist Jonny Ashburn’s melodic interplay (“Division Blues”)\, bassist Jani Zubkovs’ punk shredding (“Collapser”) and the mandolin of founding member Calvin Joss (“Flowers of Light”). Guitarist Erin Burke-Moran wrote a pastoral-to-epic\, chamber-rock journey (“Ishmael”) as a tribute to eight months spent on the Appalachian trail. The wistful “Nostalgist” features vocals from Kyle Durfey of fellow Northeastern alterna-rock grandeur artists Piano Becomes the Teeth. For the first time\, each track is meant to stand alone. \n“They’re just songs that we got together and wrote over the course of a year while trying to have a good time and reclaim whatever it is that’s simple about all of this\,” says Jamieson. “Don’t get me wrong\, we kicked our own asses constantly and stayed up staring at the ceiling thinking about song structures all night for a year here … but being free from the yolk of having our music relentlessly try to answer the un-answerable was emancipating and humbling.” \nThe band’s deeply personal 2015 LP Dust and Disquiet was a concept record about grief\, dealing with the emotions after losing friend and bassist Chris Friedrich in 2013. After the two years of global touring that followed\, Caspian took their first-ever long term hiatus – or what Jamieson called “an overdue emotional inventory.” The reflection raised questions about the friction between artistic inspiration and financial reality\, the increasingly demystified trudge of road life\, and if “the healing power of music” is even a realistic expectation after all. During that time Jamieson personally traversed an “ugly grey underworld of depression\, lethargy and emotional ambivalence\,” inspiring the lyrics to the title track. \n“Music is a mediator to the unspeakable\, and the unspeakable is always by definition out of reach\, moving somewhere invisibly along the closed curve of a circle\,” says Jamieson. “Acknowledging all this\, what if we just made an album for the simple sake of making music\, with as few existential expectations as we are capable\, with as much of our self-importance sidelined as possible in order to facilitate that?” \nEschewing many of the giant\, enveloping wall-of-guitar build-ups of past Caspian albums\, the songs inside On Circles even take circular paths\, with no beginning or ends. \n“Life isn’t a series of epic crescendos\, ” says Jamieson. “Sometimes it’s the hint of one (‘Onsra’)\, or a sequential series of crescendos that come in waves but aren’t set up to go for an obvious jugular (‘Wildblood\,’ ‘Ishmael’)\, or end up in a completely different place than where you expected\, but pivot at the very last moment back to their beginning (‘Division Blues’).”

Samantha started her career on Ruf Records\, where she was given the creative freedom to grow and express herself\, fostering an environment that allowed her unique sound to flourish. Samantha and her band will be joined on stage by the legendary Mitch Ryder. Known for one of the tightest and most hard – hitting blue – eyed soul acts of the 1960s\, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels broke out of the Motor City to become major stars\, racking up five Top 30 singles over 1966 and 1967. Ryder’s influence reverberates through the blue – collar rock music of icons like Bob Seger\, John Mellencamp\, and Bruce Springsteen. \nBut first\, witness the pioneers of Blues Rock\, the legendary Canned Heat\, playing their iconic hits including “Going Up the Country\,” “Let’s Work Together\,” and the band’s biggest hit “On the Road Again.” Hailing from Los Angeles\, California\, and formed in 1965\, Canned Heat is among the unsung heroes of 60’s rock\, famed as one of its best live acts and one of its most enduring forces. Featuring Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra\, Dale Spalding\, Rick Reed\, and Jimmy Vivino\, the band is currently touring in support of their new chart – topping Ruf Records release “Finyl Vinyl.” Canned Heat will be joined on stage by Bernard Allison. Allison is a Chicago native and is the youngest son of Luther Allison and longtime member of his father’s band. Allison has become a popular artist in his own right while faithfully keeping his dad’s musical legacy alive. Bernard and his father Luther are both Ruf Records artists. \nTo kick off the evening\, Ruf Records’ rising star Ghalia Volt will bring her unique One Woman Band to the stage. Recently highlighted on “60 Minutes\,” Ghalia blends traditional Blues with modern influences\, and her innovative approach and authentic sound highlight her dedication to preserving and evolving the rich legacy of North Mississippi Blues.

SUMMARY:Vijay Iyer Trio
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as “one of the truly great jazz musicians of our time” (Stereophile) and “extravagantly gifted… brilliantly eclectic” (The New Yorker)\, pianist Vijay Iyer brings his telepathic trio to Rockport with music from his latest ECM album\, Compassion. \n“It’s as if this band wants to both seduce you and discomfit you\, stripping you of everything but the ability to think and see for yourself.”\n– New York Times \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nDescribed by The New York Times as a “social conscience\, multimedia collaborator\, system builder\, rhapsodist\, historical thinker and multicultural gateway\,” Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential\, prolific\, shape-shifting presence in twenty-first-century music. A composer and pianist active and revered across multiple musical communities\, Iyer has created a consistently innovative\, emotionally resonant body of work over the last twenty-five years\, earning him a place as one of the leading music-makers of his generation. \nHis honors include a MacArthur Fellowship\, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, a United States Artist Fellowship\, three Grammy nominations\, the Alpert Award in the Arts\, the Greenfield Prize\, a Dutch “Edison” Prize\, and two German “Echo” awards; he was also voted DownBeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year four times. He has been praised by Pitchfork as “one of the best in the world at what he does\,” by the Los Angeles Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star\,” and by Minnesota Public Radio as “an American treasure.” \nIyer’s musical language is indebted to the great composer-pianists from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen\, the rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa\, and the African American creative music movement of the 60s and 70s. In February 2024 Iyer released Compassion (ECM Records)\, the second recording by his much-admired trio with drummer Tyshawn Sorey and bassist Linda May Han Oh. The New York Times observed\, “It’s as if this band wants to both seduce you and discomfit you\, stripping you of everything but the ability to think and see for yourself.” Other recent releases include Love In Exile (Verve\, 2023)\, a Grammy-nominated collaboration with vocalist Arooj Aftab and bassist Shahzad Ismaily; Uneasy (ECM Records\, 2021)\, the acclaimed first trio session with Sorey and Oh; Far From Over (ECM\, 2017) with the award-winning Vijay Iyer Sextet; and A Cosmic Rhythm with Each Stroke (ECM\, 2016) a suite of duets with visionary composer-trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. \nIyer is an active composer for classical ensembles and soloists\, with works premiered by Brentano Quartet\, Imani Winds\, Parker Quartet\, Bang on a Can All-Stars\, The Silk Road Ensemble\, Sō Percussion\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, East Coast Chamber Orchestra\, LA Philharmonic\, London Philharmonic\, Oregon Symphony\, American Composers Orchestra\, and virtuosi Matt Haimowitz\, Mishka Rushdie Momen\, Claire Chase\, Inbal Segev\, Sarah Rothenberg\, Shai Wosner\, and Jennifer Koh. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project produced a portrait album\, Trouble (BMOP/sound 2024)\, comprising three of Iyer’s orchestral works. Iyer recently served as composer-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall\, music director of the Ojai Music Festival\, and artist-in-residence at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. His scores are published by Schott Music. \nA tireless collaborator\, he has written big-band music for Arturo O’Farrill and Darcy James Argue\, remixed classic recordings of Talvin Singh and Meredith Monk\, joined forces with legendary musicians Henry Threadgill\, Reggie Workman\, Zakir Hussain\, and L. Subramanian\, and developed interdisciplinary work with Teju Cole\, Carrie Mae Weems\, Mike Ladd\, Julie Mehretu\, and Prashant Bhargava. Iyer is a tenured professor at Harvard University\, with a joint appointment in the Department of Music and the Department of African and African American Studies. He lives in New York City. He is a Steinway artist. \n“Vijay is one of the most unique pianists of our time\, who is fearless in his approach to playing jazz and open to the purist form of improvisation.” – Terrance Blanchard

SUMMARY:Och & Oy!: A Considered Cabaret starring Alan Cumming and Ari Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Alan Cumming (Cabaret\, The Good Wife) and Ari Shapiro (NPR’s All Things Considered\, Pink Martini) both transport audiences to other worlds through their stories. Now\, they’re joining forces in SONG. Witness the critically acclaimed evening of tunes and tall tales titled “Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret”. Musical direction by Henry Koperski. \nIn a statement\, Cumming said\, “I’ve got to know Ari over the last few years\, both socially and when he interviewed me for a couple of events. The last time was an evening in D.C.\, and by the end of it I realized our chemistry and the unusual combo of us\, as well as the fact that Ari has an amazing voice\, would make for a really great cabaret show. And kapow! We’re doing it! What I love most is it’s fresh and ever-changing.” \nShapiro added\, “When Alan first suggested that we create a show together\, I didn’t quite believe him. Then as we started to dig in to this collaboration\, I realized how much our professional lives actually complement each other. We’re both storytellers who try to help audiences better understand themselves and the world around them. This show lets us explore those shared ideals on stage together\, through stories and songs.”

SUMMARY:Vapors Of Morphine
DESCRIPTION:11/23/24\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. 7:30pm Doors / 8:00pm Show\nReserved Rail Seats & G.A. Standing. $30-$25 \nVapors was formed over a decade ago by Dana Colley\, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Lyons and Morphine’s original drummer Jerome Deupree. Drummer Tom Arey (J. Geils Band\, Peter Wolfe’s Midnight Ramblers\, Ghosts of Jupiter) replaced Deupree in 2019. Their lates album represents both a new era and a return to form for Vapors of Morphine. \nFear & Fantasy\, in its often lush arrangement\, recalls Morphine’s final album\, The Night\, where Deupree teamed up with Billy Conway\, the drummer who had replaced him; this time Arey plays on one side\, Deupree on the other. It only seems fitting when both bands have been blessed with a revolving cast of top-notch percussionists.

SUMMARY:Amy Helm
DESCRIPTION:Fri 11/22/24\nReserved Floor & Reserved Rail seating or G.A. Standing\, $42-$32\n7pm Doors / 7:30pm Show. 21+\, Positive I.D. Required \nThis will be a full band performance! \nWhen creating her fourth album\, the soulful and reflective Silver City\, Amy Helm was guided by her North Star: women’s voices. “Women whispering\, singing\, shouting their stories – speaking the truth. I wanted to dig into that inherited narrative and reach for what I could.” The epistolary anthology is a collection of conversations that travel through time\, exploring and celebrating womanhood in all its complexities. Silver City blends the folk twang of Helm’s childhood with gospel and soul\, drawing inspiration from varied stories: the life of Helm’s great-grandmother\, the story of a young fan struggling with substance abuse\, Helm’s own life as a single mother and hard-touring singer. Recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock\, New York\, and produced by Josh Kaufman\, the album finds Helm exploring themes of womanhood\, single motherhood\, and personal struggles\, offering songs that are deeply personal and narrative-driven. With Silver City\, Helm embraces the beauty of age\, survival\, and transformation through her powerful\, story-rooted performances.

SUMMARY:In Bloom Listening Series featuring The Implications Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light Julian Mendoza
DESCRIPTION:11/21/24\nGA Seating 6:00pm doors / 6:30pm show\n18+\, anyone under 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult $12 \nThe Implications: Combining the talents of some of Gloucester’s finest performers\, “The Implications” consist of the amazing songstress Millie Manning and her hauntingly beautiful voice\, teamed with powerful vocals and commanding performances of the incomparable John Jerome\, all anchored by the incredibly versatile and gifted Mr. Geoff Small on guitar and vocal as well. Harmonies abound\, with moving original compositions and a curated selection of cover songs to bring it all together. \nRachel Sumner and Traveling Light: Fresh off a first place win at the 2023 Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival band competition\, Rachel Sumner has been captivating audiences throughout the northeast. With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice\, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions. \nSumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit\, singing and writing with the genre-bending roots group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own\, Sumner’s songs have been critically acclaimed: winning the 2021 John Lennon Award in the folk category for her song “Radium Girls (Curie Eleison);” earning a spot in the Kerrville New Folk Competition; and being chosen four consecutive years as one of the top Massachusetts entries in NPR’s Tiny Desk Competition. Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light released their debut LP in the summer of 2022 to critical acclaim. \nJulian Mendoza: Julian Mendoza is amorphous. Floating gracefully through the space between hip-hop\, soul\, jazz\, and much more\, the Massachusetts singer-rapper-songwriter has been likened to boundary-pushers such as OutKast\, Dominic Fike\, and Frank Ocean. \nWhile these comparisons alone paint an eclectic picture\, Mendoza’s versatility may be best represented by his wealth of genre-bending collaborative work. Artists that appear in his discography range from Rei Kimura of indie pop-rock band Moxie to Grammy-nominated Dreamville affiliate DaVionne and underground hip-hop rising star Blvck Svm. Mendoza’s latest body of work\, the 14-track “Beneath My Wings\,” features contributions from more than 40 musicians\, writers\, and engineers.

SUMMARY:PATRICIA AU - Art of Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:BEYOND THE MUSIC TALK SERIES \nHave you ever wondered what paths a musician might take outside of performing? In this new interactive talk series\, you’ll meet several musicians who speak about their own unique creative space. \nCanadian pianist Patricia Au is widely known for her vivacious playing and leads an active performing and coaching career. Ms. Au actively works in Boston as a vocal coach\, piano teacher\, and teaching artist. In this talk\, Patricia Au discusses the Art of Collaboration\, specifically what does it mean to be a collaborative pianist and vocal coach and how to be a connector in a multi-faceted world. \nExposed to art song since the age of ten\, Canadian pianist Patricia Au is widely known for her vivacious playing and leads an active performing and coaching career\, collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists. She has appeared in such venues as Vancouver’s Chan Centre for Performing Arts\, Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts\, Boston’s Jordan Hall and Isabella Gardner Museum\, as well as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has also toured throughout Canada\, Austria\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. She often performs with Phoenix Ensemble (Boston) and music directs for Boston Opera Collaborative. A frequent performer of contemporary music\, she has workshopped works with their composers including Murray Adaskin\, Sofia Gulbaidulina\, John Greer\, John Harbison\, and Greg Zavracky. \nAs a recipient of various scholarships and grants\, Ms. Au has pursued additional studies focusing on art song and opera in Canada\, France\, Italy\, and Austria. She has performed for prominent musicians such as Sir Thomas Allen\, Elly Ameling\, Thomas Quasthoff\, and Malcolm Martineau. Ms. Au has studied at the Franz-Schubert Institut in Baden bei Wien\, Austria through the generosity of a Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship awarded by the University of British Columbia. She was invited to the Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours\, France and performed Tel jour\, telle nuit for Poulenc’s extended family in Noizay. \nPassionate about dissolving the boundaries between song performance and scholarship\, she has studied and performed at the Vancouver International Song Institute. Not limiting her teaching approach to existing pedagogical models\, Ms. Au actively works in Boston as a vocal coach\, piano teacher\, and teaching artist. In the past\, she has served as faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and has taught at New England Conservatory in Boston. During the summer months\, she is on faculty as a vocal coach/pianist for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and during the academic year\, she teaches as part of the Opera Staff at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Most recently\, Ms. Au was appointed teaching artist for Boston Lyric Opera\, traveling to local Boston Public Schools to create operas in classrooms. \nShe received her Doctorate of Musical Arts majoring in Collaborative Piano from New England Conservatory and her dissertation\, “A New Edition of the Piano-Vocal Score of Jake Heggie’s To Hell and Back” is available through Bent Pen Music Inc. \nFree\, reservations encouraged.

SUMMARY:JP Harris
DESCRIPTION:11/14/24\nReserved floor seating\, reserved rail seating\, G.A Standing. 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. $28-$23 \nJP Harris was born shortly\, and fortunately\, a few minutes before Valentine’s Day 1983 in Montgomery\, Alabama. Within a handful of years he was wearing a green velour tracksuit and leading a large Doberman around for street credibility\, at the young age of three. He had a charm and strut that would take him far\, so the grown folks said; but roughly a decade later\, on the opposite side of the country\, he would leave his family’s home late one summer night with no designs on fame\, fortune\, or clothing endorsements\, never to return. He had an inkling that the eighth grade was enough education for where he was headed\,and set a course for Anywhere\, USA. Turns out he was right.\nSpending most of his teenage years traveling by freight train\, thumb\, or foot\, he would set down his rucksack for what he thought was the last time in rural northern New England\, shortly after the anticlimactic event known as Y2K came to pass without much to-do. He spent the next decade living in remote cabins lacking the modern appointments of power\, running water\, or winter road access. It was there Harris honed the many trades he’d learned: sheepherder\, logger\, heavy equipment operator\, farm laborer\, restoration carpenter\, and sometimes as contraband handler\, while his musical palette expanded beyond the punk rock of his youth to include the Early American Folk Canon of blues\, old time\, and early country recordings.\nJP had long fashioned himself a carpenter who did halfway-decent campfire renditions of old country tunes\, but turned suddenly to songwriting in his mid twenties after years without the slightest ambition toward “music business” of any sort. He would assemble a band\, trade his work truck for an old Econoline van\, and fifteen years would elapse before he would reluctantly add the term “professional” in front of his title of “musician.” In 2011\, Harris loaded his van and trailer with every tool\, guitar\, and keepsake he could cram and moved to Nashville TN\, shortly before the release of his debut album “I’ll Keep Calling\,” which would win him countless accolades from various outlets and entities unheard of by the general masses. It was enough praise to keep him on the road\, even if his largest reward garnered at the time was a sizable box of Taco Bell gift cards. He would go on to record 2014’s “Home Is Where The Hurt Is\,” 2018’s “Sometimes Dogs Bark At Nothing\,” and 2021’s Appalachian banjo-centric side project album “Don’t You Marry No Railroad Man\,” under the moniker JP Harris’ Dreadful Wind & Rain.\nJP’s historic restoration carpentry has continued to be a baseline for his relationship to music; the yin to his yang\, the Burt to his Ernie\, the Dolly to his Porter. It was through this concurrent line of work that he met another twice-initialed singer with a penchant for old Americana music\, obscure film\, and overly elaborate ethnic meal preparations: one JD McPherson. The two became fast friends and would eventually\, through many twists\, turns\, false starts\, and biblically-proportionate plagues\, enter a modest studio in Nashville to record Harris’ latest album “JP Harris Is A Trash Fire.” Over the course of nine months in 2023\, they recorded a sometimes lush\, sometimes sparse\, and sometimes jarring country album of Harris’ originals\, loudly and violently squelching any attempt to pigeon-hole a song into any subgenre of country music. Only albums by Lee Hazelwood and an obscure folk album Waylon Jennings made when his hair was still short were allowed to be mentioned in reference. Featuring the guest vocals of Erin Rae\, The Watson Twins\, Shovels & Rope\, and producer JD McPherson himself\, the record is equal parts satire\, reflection\, and apology to those that would listen. In a musical landscape of period-correct reproduction\, “outlaw” internet posturing\, and flavor-of-the-month variants on country\, “JP Harris Is A Trash Fire” burns bright as a dumpster ablaze in a Walmart parking lot on a moonless night; some will fear it\, some will gravitate to its acrid warmth\, and most will have no idea what to make of the situation. Harris has been steadily elbowing the definitive boundaries of “country music” wider with every album\, both sonically and lyrically\, and his latest piece of self described “Avant-Country” is no exception. Even within the rapidly growing world of “underground” country music\, Harris still considers himself an outsider\, content to inhabit a gray area where punk rock ethos\, folk art aesthetic\, and the workingman’s ballad mingle.\nWhen he’s not touring\, JP Harris can be found fixing historic houses\, riding old motorcycles\, or picking through scrap piles for useable refuse.
