SUMMARY:Dueling Pianos!
DESCRIPTION:06/26/24\nPartial Seating/G.A. Standing 7:00pm doors / 8:00pm show\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required $20 \nIt has been said that a dueling piano show is quite literally “the most fun one can\nhave with one’s clothes ON! Two grand pianos are center-stage with a team of outrageously talented pianists that seem to know every song ever written. \nEach show is different because it’s all request and you or your friends might even\nget called up on stage for a bit of good humored fun and some unforgettable u-\ntube moments.Think YOU won’t sing along? Just TRY not too…. I dare ya! \nDueling piano shows are request oriented\, interactive sing-a-long shows wherein\ntwo piano players sit across from each other and trade songs. The dueling piano audience is used for the dueling aspect of the show. Audience members are pitted one-side-against-the-other. Examples of rivalries include country vs. rock\, men against women\, etc.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:6/25/24\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. 7:00pm Doors / 8:00p Show \nOn his second album\, The Fatalist\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There’s 808 programming\, chopped up Charley Patton samples\, washes of synth. There’s a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols’ vision for the blues is of a form of music that’s intimately tied to everyday life in 2023\, something that’s reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation\, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present\, and as such\, it’s a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today. The Fatalist sounds unlike any blues record you’re likely to hear in 2023.

SUMMARY:Lizzie No
DESCRIPTION:6/23/2024\nPartial Seating and G.A. Standing. 7:00p Doors / 8:00p Show\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. $20-$25 \nAfter a dizzying five-year span that saw the release of two stunning\, eclectic albums (Hard Won and Vanity\, which drew praise from the likes of Billboard and Rolling Stone) — followed by appearances at AmericanaFest\, the Newport Folk Festival\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, and SXSW\, and tours with Iron and Wine\, Son Little\, and Adia Victoria — Lizzie No found herself at the forefront of a new vanguard of genre-defying artists. Her new album\, Halfsies (Thirty Tigers / Miss Freedomland)\, finds No situated among her peers while still searching for freedom — freedom from the constraints of categorization\, sure\, but more importantly\, freedom from the depths of her own personal despair and from an increasingly violent and nightmarish American cultural and political landscape.

SUMMARY:The Mavericks – Moon & Stars Summer Tour ‘24
DESCRIPTION:Any band that manages to survive three decades\, seeing its core members go from young adults to veteran musicians is bound to have its swings and cycles. \nThe Mavericks\, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon\, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally\, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary.

SUMMARY:In The Heights
DESCRIPTION:The unbearable July heat has the denizens of NYC’s Washington Heights neighborhood in the streets shouting\, “Que calor!” Several established businesses have closed. Housing costs – and racial tensions – are on the rise. And the once vibrant\, now dwindling community must rally together to preserve their culture and their way of life. \nLin Manuel-Miranda’s music-filled love letter to the community of his youth\, In The Heights\, tells the story of the corner bodega where the coffee is hot\, light\, and sweet\, the apartment windows that are always open\, and the cool breeze that carries the percussive rhythm of the bustling city and three generations of dreams. And for this community on the brink of change\, it tells a story of hope\, heritage\, and healing love.

SUMMARY:JAKE SHIMABUKURO
DESCRIPTION:Reinventing the ukulele into an instrument of seemingly boundless capabilities\, Hawaii native Jake Shimabukuro fuses his deft fingerpicking technique into a unique style that includes elements of jazz\, blues\, funk\, rock\, bluegrass\, classical\, folk\, and flamenco. The virtuoso will be returning to Rockport for a special\, intimate duo format likely to include his jaw-dropping interpretations of pop classics (“Bohemian Rhapsody\,” “Hallelujah”) as well as his own thrilling compositions. \nShimabukuro was given his first ukulele at age 4 and never looked back. His mother\, an accomplished ukulele musician in her own right\, got him started and soon the Honolulu native started performing in and around Hawaii and developing his own fanbase. He joined the acclaimed Hawaii trio Pure Heart and later the band Colón before going out on his own in 2002. Shimabukoru first gained mainstream recognition in Japan (where he frequently tours)\, releasing several records that became hits in Japan. \nBut it wasn’t until a friend posted a clip of the young ukulele maestro on YouTube that Shimabukuro broke out into the American market. The clip\, a cover of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral and soon he was getting collaboration requests from stars including Jimmy Buffett\, Béla Fleck\, Ziggy Marley\, Cyndi Lauper\, and Yo-Yo Ma. He toured with Buffett in 2005\, 2006 and 2007\, and is featured on several of Buffett’s albums and videos\, including his 2007 CD/DVD release Live in Anguilla. \nHis records began getting major distribution and radio play\, the budding worldwide star finding a sweet spot between pop\, world\, bluegrass and classical\, mixing in pop covers with his own intricate compositions. His 2011 release\, Peace Love and Ukelele rose to #1 on Billboard’s world music charts. Subsequent records like 2012’s orchestral Grand Ukelele and 2015’s more intimate Travels showcased the breadth of Shimabukuro’s talent and interests. Last year he released Jake and Friends\, a star-studded recording that included duets with a host of artists including Jack Johnson\, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet among others. \n“buoyant musicianship and brisk proficiency”- New York Times

SUMMARY:ROCKPORT CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL: THE WESTERLIES
DESCRIPTION:The Westerlies\, “an arty quartet…mixing ideas from jazz\, new classical\, and Appalachian folk” (New York Times)\, navigate jazz\, classical and folk with the precision of a string quartet\, the audacity of a rock band\, and the charm of a family sing-along. \nThe Westerlies present a program of living composers whose music they have championed in recent years. Pulitzer-Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s landmark string quartet Entr’acte\, the centerpiece of The Westerlies’ 2023 release\, is presented alongside the title track from their 2020 release Wherein Lies the Good by Robin Holcomb. The program continues with folk songs adapted from Sam Amidon and Nico Muhly\, whose genre-expanding work has inspired The Westerlies since the ensemble’s formation at The Juilliard School over a decade ago. The Westerlies present this body of music with their signature precision and virtuosity\, and in the process\, craft a sound that is warm and tactile\, engaging and expressive\, at once familiar and completely their own. \nTHE WESTERLIES\nThe Westerlies\, “an arty quartet…mixing ideas from jazz\, new classical\, and Appalachian folk” (New York Times) are a New York-based brass quartet comprised of Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands on trumpet\, and Andy Clausen and Addison Maye-Saxon on trombone. From Carnegie Hall to Coachella\, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues and projects with the precision of a string quartet\, the audacity of a rock band\, and the charm of a family sing-along. \n“Chamber music with bracing melodies and\, crucially\, an undeniable sense of fun.” LA Times\nFormed in 2011\, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from the West to the East. The Westerlies explore jazz\, roots\, and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). \nThe ensemble has produced numerous critically acclaimed albums of genre-defying music. 2022 saw the release of the Songbook Vol. 2 and Live at TOURISTS on Westerlies Records\, the ensemble’s in-house record label. The previous year was a prolific year for the ensemble\, with the release of Fireside Brass: A Westerlies Holiday (Westerlies Records)\, Songbook Vol. 1 (Westerlies Records)\, and Bricolage (Westerlies Records)\, a collaborative album of improvisations with pianist/composer Conrad Tao. 2021 also saw the release of This Land\, the ensemble’s collaboration with GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Theo Bleckmann. Sought-after collaborators\, The Westerlies are also featured on recordings by Fleet Foxes (Nonesuch)\, Big Red Machine (Jagjaguwar)\, Vieux Farka Touré (Six Degrees Records)\, Common (Lakeshore) and Dave Douglas (Greenleaf). \nEducation and community engagement are core elements of The Westerlies’ mission. In 2021\, The Westerlies were named the inaugural small ensemble-in-residence at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School. The Westerlies also produce an annual music festival in Seattle called Westerlies Fest\, which combines evening performances featuring numerous guest artists\, an all-day open-to-the-public creative music jamboree\, and workshops in local public schools. The Westerlies have engaged students of all ages and abilities around the country with their innovative assemblies and masterclasses\, promoting the values of cooperation and inclusion through music.
