SUMMARY:Charlie Parr with The Wildmans
DESCRIPTION:3/13/2024\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 7:30p Doors / 8:30p Show \nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \nThe Wildmans come from the hills of Floyd\, Virginia\, in the heart of the Appalachian mountain music tradition. From campsite jamming at festivals and fiddler’s conventions and a college level music education comes the foundation for musical exploration that sets this group apart\, taking the audience on a musical journey that reflects the growth and passion of these talented musicians.\nHaving shared the stage with talents such as Bela Fleck\, The Steep Canyon Rangers\, The Steel Wheels\, Danny Knicely\, Sammy Shelor\, Sierra Hull\, Billy Strings\, and more.\, these young musicians are making their way in the American stringband scene.

SUMMARY:Saturday Brunch with StratCat Willie Hayes
DESCRIPTION:StratCat Willie Hayes is an old-school bluesman who has been writing and playing for over fifty years. Some of his earliest influences includedT-Bone Walker\, MikeBloomfield \,B.B. King\, Johnny Winter\, and Duke Robillard. In 1995\, after several years of gigging in local clubs and fronting many cover bands\, his affinity for and love of the blues led to him to form a band that would allow him to focus exclusively on the blues.“Blues Plate Special” was a harmonica driven blues band that allowed him to focus on songwriting\, while covering groups ranging from Little Charlie & the Nightcats to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. With Blues Plate Special\, he worked hard to keep the blues alive in theSouthernTier of New York\, recording three studio albums along with one live album. In 2019\, in an effort to explore other styles of the blues\, he pulled several players together that had been with him for many of those fifty-plus years to form “StratCatWillie & the Strays”.In 2020\, armed with thirteen original tunes\, he took the Strays into the studio. The result was“On The Prowl”\,which debuted on SiriusXM BLUESVILLE’s “Rack ofBlues” and remained on the Roots Music Report charts for six consecutive months\, finishing #52on theRMR“Top 200 Contemporary Blues Album Chart for 2021”.Following up on that success\, late in 2021 StratCat Willie brought the same players together to record“On A Hot Tin Roof”.Comprised of twelve new original tunes written entirely during the pandemic\, the music not only reflects the darkness of the times\, it also reflects the “Good News of the Blues” and the joy of classic swing/jump blues by tapping into the rich sound of a backing horn section and soulful background vocals.Over his fifty plus year career\, StratCat Willie has shared the stage with many musicians across theUnited States\, fromNew Orleans\, where he has jammed with legends like Walter “Wolfman” Washington\, to San Francisco\, Memphis\, and Nashville\, always looking to meet and play with different folks. StratCat Willie not only enjoys the spontaneity of a good blues jam\, he revels in the opportunity to bring new players together and “make a statement”.Continuing the influences of the old masters\, his swinging\, upbeat style has been described as “always a party”and“uniquely his”\, while always paying tribute to and recognizing the African-American men and women who gave us this amazing art form.

No Depression writes “Reardon is truly a treasure.”\nHer latest release Changes (July 20\, 2023) is the continuation of a journey that began with Reardon’s 2022 release In the Good Light. SUMMARY:VOX ONE
DESCRIPTION:Vox One is an award-winning a cappella jazz quintet that combines elements of blues\, funk\, gospel\, and folk into their own brand of vocal music\, which is “most adventurous and distinction.” – San Francisco Examiner. The group\, formed in 1988\, has since developed a unique style considered to be the cutting edge of a cappella. “This jazz quintet puts all kinds of throat sounds to such funky good use that listeners break into applause and – better – feel like dancing.” – Boston Magazine. \nVox One has performed internationally\, and has opened for Ray Charles\, Chicago\, the Persuasions\, the Bobs\, the Woody Herman Orchestra\, the Count Basie Orchestra\, and most recently appeared on Ahmad Jamal’s latest recording After Fajr. The group earns wide acclaim for their performances and CDs. Their awards include “Best A cappella Group\, Jazz” – Boston Magazine. Vox One’s eponymous debut CD was named “Best Album” and awarded “Best Song” by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA): “Creative arrangements and soulful spark… fabulous lead vocalists\, and exquisite blend\, a great vocal percussion sound\, and lots of class.” Their second US release “Out There\,” won “Album of the Year\,” “Best Jazz Song\,” and “Best R&B song” by CASA. “…as defining an album for vocal jazz as Singers Unlimited “A Capella” and Take 6’s debut album…it’s that good.” -Primarily A Cappella. With their 1998 album “Chameleon\,” Vox One was named “Artist of the Year\,” and once again it earned “Best Jazz Album” and “Best Jazz Song.” The 2006 release\, Pure Imagination received “Best Folk/World Song” for Kind of a 3. \nJodi Jenkins-Ainsworth (soprano)\, Yumiko Matsuoka (alto)\, Paul Stiller (tenor/vocal drums)\, Paul Pampinella (baritone) and Tom Baskett (bass)\, met at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where all of them are now on the faculty. A first-time listener of Vox One may be amazed to hear a variety of instruments such as drums\, bass\, horns\, and guitar. “I am beside myself how Vox One produces the sound they do with the human voice.” – Northeast Performer. Other arrangements use tight\, lush voicings and interesting reharmonizations which give familiar songs a new twist. “Vox One manages to transform a white-bread classic like “Edelweiss” into something more surprising\, and yes\, even funky…a tricky\, intelligent arrangement.” – James Marcus\, JazzTimes Magazine. \nFor access and accommodation information\, visit https://www.salemstate.edu/access or email access@salemstate.edu.

SUMMARY:Sunny War and Chris Pierce
DESCRIPTION:2/22/24\n21+\, Positive ID Required. 8:00p doors/8:30p show \n“The Best Albums of 2023 (So Far)” – Rolling Stone \n“I haven’t heard a young guitarist this dexterous and ass-kicking in eons.” – L.A Weekly \nIt’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces\, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles-based street singer\, guitarist\, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider\, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting. Her restless spirit\, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother\, led her to Venice Beach\, California\, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now\, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting\, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost. \n“I haven’t been so deeply\, deeply moved by just a person and their guitar like this in a long time” – NPR Music \n“The sound of everyone who’s hungry for change\, steadying themselves and marching toward a common goal”. – Rolling Stone \nIn 2023\, Chris Pierce was handpicked to be the special guest opener for the NEIL YOUNG Coastal Tour. He gained additional worldwide prominence with “We Can Always Come Back to This”. His hit song aired on 3 episodes of the #1 NBC primetime series ‘THIS IS US\,’ then went on to #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
