SUMMARY:Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley (at The Actors Studio in Salisbury)
DESCRIPTION:Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland\, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door\, determined to have him\, watching the years slip away. \nWith Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families\, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then\, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion\, these yearning\, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking\, funny as hell\, and ultimately deeply moving. \nOUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a compassionate\, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love. \nVenue: The Actors Studio of Newburyport – Crossroads Plaza\n1 Merrill Street\, Unit # 3\nSalisbury\, MA 01952

SUMMARY:ROE by Lisa Loomer
DESCRIPTION:ROE\, by acclaimed playwright Lisa Loomer\, is a theatrical survey of the complicated and divisive underpinnings of Roe v. Wade\, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established a woman’s right to an abortion. The playwright has updated the script since the Court’s June 2022 ruling in Dobbs. V. Jackson Women’s Health\, overturning that constitutional right. \nLoomer’s incisive play cuts through the headlines and rhetoric as she offers a clever\, shocking\, humorous\, and poignant portrayal of the two women at the center of this issue and explores what it is like to be an average citizen caught in the currents of history. Taking place from the 1970s to the present with characters on both sides of the issue from decidedly pro-choice to decidedly pro-life\, ROE reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and commitment each person has for their cause. \nROE was commissioned in 2012 by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) as part of their series “American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle”\, a multi-decade program of commissioning and developing new plays about moments of change in U.S. history. It was developed at the University of Texas and The Kennedy Center as part of DC’s Women’s Voices Festival as well as OSF’s Black Swan Lab before premiering at OSF in 2016. \nWritten by Lisa Loomer\nDirected by Sara Conlon \nPERFORMANCES\nFebruary 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm\nFebruary 25 at 2 pm – followed by a post-show conversation \nMarch 1 and 2 at 7:30 pm\nMarch 3 at 2 pm \nFriday\, March 1 is SALEM NIGHT.
