SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents our two February Exhibitions: Elements\, and Featured Artist: Jennifer Day
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is thrilled to announce two new exhibitions opening on February 1st! On view in the Sargent and Hartson Galleries is Elements\, an exhibition that responds to elements of nature or “elemental” feelings/experiences in an artist’s life. Running alongside Elements is Featured Artist Jennifer Day\, on view in the Hills Gallery. Additionally\, the Winter Gift Shop will open on Feb 1. A joint reception for Elements and Jennifer Day will be held on Saturday\, February 8th\, from 4:00-6:00 PM. \nElements features 130 artworks by 99 artists from the Newburyport area and beyond. Artists responded with depictions of the natural landscape\, mixed media abstractions of fire\, water and ice\, sculptures reminiscent of rock and clay\, and powerful commentary on the current state of our environment. \nIn the next door Hills Gallery\, Featured Artist Jennifer Day utilizes black oil paint on a gessoed panel to reveal the drama of water without the infinite options of local color. Gray scale sensitivity and range is her goal. To achieve this\, she works reductively by rubbing the surface and scraping her finger methodically through the paint to reveal the light beneath. Jennifer works between two opposites: the geometry of the picture plane versus the challenge of the nebulous\, the fleeting\, and the impulse of nature to escape the plane altogether. \nRunning concurrently alongside Elements and Featured Artist Jennifer Day is the Winter Gift Shop\, on view until March 29th. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm and Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm. Newburyport Art is closed on Mondays. The ground-floor Hills Gallery has an accessible entrance. More information\, as well as an online gallery is available at newburyportart.org. \nFounded in 1948\, Newburyport Art is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and to providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community.

SUMMARY:When Redcoats Marched in Marblehead
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 26\, 1775\, about 250 British soldiers marched through Marblehead\, sent by the royal governor to search for weapons. When that column of redcoats stalled at a drawbridge in Salem\, their commander ordered locals to let them pass. Militia companies were assembling to stop them. If that confrontation had turned violent\, it could have been the start of the Revolutionary War\, almost two months before the first shots at Lexington. \nThis talk puts that confrontation in February 1775 in the larger context of the Massachusetts Patriots’ effort to assemble a military force\, the royal governor’s attempts to stop them\, and how that stalemate eventually led to April 19. It digs below myths attached to “Leslie’s Retreat” to highlight eyewitness accounts of a day the Revolutionary War might have begun\, but didn’t. \nJ.L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War\, as well as a book-length study for the National Park Service and many articles for the Journal of the American Revolution and other outlets. He has spoken at many historic sites and institutions in greater Boston\, Mount Vernon\, the American Revolution Institute in Washington\, and the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York. Bell’s website\, Boston 1775\, offers daily updates of “history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about the start of the American Revolution.” \nCLICK HERE for in-person tickets \nCLICK HERE for ZOOM tickets \n

SUMMARY:Race & Song: A Musical Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Reggie Harris | Alastair Moock \nTogether in musical conversation\, the duo explores complex issues of race\, class\, gender and history\, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. \n“dashing and extraordinary” – The Strad Magazine \nRace and Song was born in 2020 out of a deep bond and nearly 30-year friendship between veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours Reggie Harris and Alastair Moock. Together in musical conversation\, the two explore complex issues of race\, class\, gender\, and history\, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. One of Alastair and Reggie’s greatest strengths as a duo is their ability to meet audiences where they are\, adapting their conversation and musical repertoire for a wide range of ages and experiences. \nReggie and Alastair bring Race and Song to dozens of schools each year\, from elementary to high school. Through their interactive\, assembly-style program\, they explore what it means to live in one’s skin\, how to talk more productively about race\, and how our country’s past informs the present. Improvising together on songs like “Wade in the Water\,” “This Little Light of Mine\,” and original compositions\, the duo demonstrate the unique ability of music to express sorrow\, joy\, creativity\, and determination… A must-see program for anyone interested in booking race-conscious work for young people. \nFor adults who want to deepen their understanding of antiracism and get more comfortable talking about difficult subjects\, Race and Song is an invitation to listen\, learn\, and engage. Reggie and Alastair have performed together at theaters\, arts centers\, houses of worship\, libraries\, senior centers\, and universities nationwide\, modeling what productive interracial conversations about race can look like while swapping tunes and inviting audience participation in a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere. \nReggie Harris has traveled the world for over 40 years as a songwriter\, storyteller and lecturer using music and the spoken word to make an impact in education\, social and racial justice\, the environment\, faith and in human and civil rights. He is a teaching artist in the John F Kennedy Center’s CETA program\, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar\, and the Director of Music Education for the Living Legacy Project\, leading civil rights pilgrimages throughout the South. In 2021\, he received a lifetime Spirit of Folk Award from Folk Alliance International. \nAlastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter who has toured throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, and Asia\, performing at renowned events like the Newport Folk Festival and sharing the stage with acts like Arlo Guthrie\, Taj Mahal\, and Greg Brown. He’s also a Grammy nominated children’s musician\, social justice educator for all ages\, and co-founder of two antiracist music organizations\, The Opening Doors Project and Family Music Forward. The Boston Globe calls him “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters” and The Washington Post says “every song is a gem.” \nConcert attendees are invited to a post-concert meet and greet with the artists. \nFree\, Reservations Encouraged
