SUMMARY:Not So Faust
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you are familiar with Goethe or Marlowe’s tales of “Faust\,” both brooding epics of a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge. As the title suggests\, this version is “Not So Faust!”. Jill Rogati (director) revisits the original story in the style of Commedia dell’arte – a traditional Italian form of theatre that uses masks\, physical comedy\, and playful improvisation to make a solemn subject incredibly silly. While philosophy and stern contemplation of the complex nature of humanity certainly have a place\, “Not So Faust!” seeks to show that loosening our belts and laughing at ourselves is just what the Doctor ordered.

SUMMARY:The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion
DESCRIPTION:November 6–22\, 2026\nFriday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nOpening reception: NOVEMBER 7\, 4-6 PM\nRocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930 \nGloucester\, MA — The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion brings together artists from the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship for an exhibition celebrating three years of artistic exploration\, collaboration\, and engagement with one of New England’s most significant coastal landscapes. \nThe exhibition features work by artists who have participated in the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, a program created to support artists in developing new projects inspired by the Great Marsh\, its natural and man-made history and significance\, as well as its beauty and immediate fragility. Over the past three years\, 22 artists have been selected as Great Marsh Artist Fellows and have dedicated themselves to creating 24 projects that connect art\, ecology\, history\, science\, and community. Some have been completed and presented to the community\, others are still underway. \nThe exhibition marks an important milestone in a partnership that began with The Great Marsh Concert in 2023\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The concert brought artists and members of the Great Marsh community together around a shared interest in the landscape and its future. That initial collaboration led to the formation of the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, which provides $2\,000 grants to artists to develop projects that premiere at organizations and institutions connected to the Great Marsh. \nThe fellowship has grown into a network of artists and organizational partners extending across the Great Marsh region. Over the past three years\, fellows have developed and presented projects with organizations including Essex Heritage\, Greenbelt\, Essex County’s Land Trust\, Mass Audubon\, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge\, The Trustees of Reservations\, TownGreen\, Essex National Heritage Area\, Historic New England\, Massachusetts Bay National Estuary Program\, Merrimack Valley Planning Commission\, Plum Island Ecosystems LTER at the Marine Biological Laboratory\, and the Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts and Bass Institute at The Governor’s Academy. The Great Marsh Artists Fellowship and this exhibition are funded in part by the Kathleen Van Demark Fund for the Great Marsh. \nRather than asking artists simply to interpret the marsh\, the fellowship invites them to spend time with the places\, people\, histories\, species\, and questions that make up this extraordinary landscape. The resulting projects have taken many forms\, demonstrating the range of ways artists can engage with a living ecosystem. \n“The Great Marsh Starts Here!” reflects both the geography and the philosophy of the exhibition. The Great Marsh begins here\, but it also extends outward—through waterways\, wildlife\, communities\, working landscapes\, and the many people who care for and experience it. The exhibition offers a chance to see the Great Marsh through the eyes of artists who have spent time observing\, listening\, researching\, imagining\, and creating in relationship to the landscape. \nArtists and Works\nThe exhibition brings together work by 18 of the 22 Great Marsh Artists Fellows including Resa Blatman\, Gail Boyajian\, Marcia Ciro\, Robert J. Bradshaw\, Michele Brody\, Anne Eder\, Karen Futral\, Isaac Grenader\, Robert Honstein\, Jenn Houle\, Amy Kaczur\, Andrea LeBlanc\, Susan Quateman\, Katie Pustizzi\, Norah Solorzano\, Erika Sutter\, and Alex Young. \nThe work presented moves across artistic disciplines and mediums—from painting\, photography\, and sculpture to video\, book art\, music\, animation\, and dance—revealing the many ways a living landscape can be seen\, experienced\, interpreted\, and expressed. \nAbout the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\nThe Great Marsh Artists Fellowship was established following the 2023 Great Marsh Concert\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The fellowship provides $2\,000 grants to artists to create projects inspired by the Great Marsh and to develop those projects in partnership with organizations throughout the region. \nThe program recognizes artists as important observers\, interpreters\, storytellers\, and participants in the life of a landscape. By placing artists in conversation with environmental organizations\, historic sites\, conservation groups\, scientists\, educators\, and local communities\, the fellowship creates opportunities for new forms of public engagement with the Great Marsh. \nSince its creation\, the fellowship has supported 22 artists and 24 projects\, with projects ranging across visual art\, music\, film\, dance\, performance\, writing\, interdisciplinary practice\, and community engagement. \nThe Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion continues that work by bringing the artists together in one place and inviting audiences to experience the Great Marsh not as a single subject\, but as a complex and interconnected living landscape. \nExhibition Dates: November 6–22\, 2026\nOpening: November 7\, 4-6 PM\nGallery Hours: Friday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nLocation: Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930\nSome of the artwork will be for sale.\nAdmission: Donations gratefully accepted to the FREE exhibition. Recommended donations requested for certain programs to pay the performers. Register to attend on exhibition page of Manship website: HERE. \nFor more information\, visit Manship Artists Residency at ManshipArtists.org or contact Rebecca Reynolds\, rreynolds@ManshipArtists.org\, 978-290-8438.

Along with bassist John Turner\, trumpeter Chris Pratt\, drummer Mike Coffey\, keyboardist Jeff Ceasrine\, baritone and tenor saxophonist Craig Thomas\, and tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille\, Roomful keeps on rockin’ year after year! \nRoomful of Blues\, according to DownBeat magazine\, “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping\, horn-heavy\, hard-edged blues and R&B\, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.” Since 1967\, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing\, rock ‘n’ roll\, jump\, blues and soul has earned it five Grammy Award nominations and a slew of other accolades\, including seven Blues Music Awards. With a non-stop performance schedule for over 55 years\, Roomful of Blues has earned critical\, popular and radio success and a legion of fans around the globe. including the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll for “Best Blues Band”. \nD.D. Bastos – Vocals DD is no stranger to the stage. She began singing in church at the age of 5 years old. Music has always been her passion. D.D. earned second chair in the All-Eastern Honors Ensemble representing Massachusetts which garnered her a scholarship. After college D.D. began performing with local bands throughout NE which led to the inception of her band DD & The Road Kings. Her work put her closely associated with the fraternity that is; Roomful of Blues\, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones\, The Broadcasters and the dozens of splinter groups who have branched off — shaping many other New England Blues bands. Certainly\, when three of them show up on D.D. and the Road Kings’ album Lover Bird\, which was well received by critics and fans alike\, there is a common thread that can be traced back to the ’60s Blues revival. D.D. is also a Choral Director in the public school system with 20+ years as a private music teacher. Her love of singing is what fuels her soulful and powerful performances. \nChris Vachon – Guitar Chris is a true multi-talent. His prowess as a guitar slinger is well documented\, and his strengths as a producer and songwriter grow from album to album. He produced the band’s nine most recent albums—There Goes the Neighborhood (1998)\, Watch You When You Go (2001)\, Live at Wolf Trap (2002) the Grammy nominated That’s Right! (2003)\, and Standing Room Only (2004)\, “Raisin’ A Ruckus” (2008)\, Hook\, Line & Sinker (2011)\, 45 Live (2013) and In A Roomful of Blues (2020) after co-producing all of Roomful’s other albums recorded in the ’90s. Chris’s songs— such as “Turn It On! Turn It Up!\,” “Running Out of Time\,” “She’ll Be So Fine\,” “Blue\, Blue World\,” “Dynamite” and “Keep on Rockin'” have become firm favorites in AAA and bluesradio formats\, bringing many new fans into the Roomful fold. \nJohn Turner – Upright and Electric Bass A veteran of the New England jazz scene\, bassist John Turner has performed and recorded with just about everybody–specifically the Either/Orchestra\,Charlie Kohlhase\, Scott Hamilton\, Roswell Rudd\, Lee Konitz\, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, members of Ornette Coleman’s band\, and Magic Dick-Jay Geils and Blues Time to name a few. John’s rock solid bottom is the essential element of the swing groove which Roomful is renowned for. \nJeff Ceasrine – PianoOrgan Originally from New York\, Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed throughout the New England area on keyboards\, rhythm guitar\, percussion\, and background vocals for over 25 years. He has worked in several long-standing acts in Rhode Island (blues\, jazz\, and swing) and has played many one-off gigs with various bands throughout the region. A frequent guest and on-call keyboard player with Roomful of Blues since 2008 (appearing on their recent “In a Roomful of Blues” CD)\, Jeff is comfortable with many different blues stylings. His influences include Pine Top Perkins\, Duke Ellington\, Fats Waller\, Lonnie Smith\, Otis Spann and Jimmy Smith..” \nMike Coffey – Drums From Newport Rhode Island Mike Coffey spent 20 years performing with the US Navy band. Upon retirement he performed with local blues artist Chris Stoval Brown and other wellknown blues artist in the Boston area. As part of a weekly Jazz series he has performed with Mike Renzi and Grey Sargent both members of Tony Bennett’s band and other renown jazz artist. He also performs with 50s doo wop group”The Diamonds” when they perform in New England. He studied with renown drum instructors Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffee. It was Rich’s interest in the swinging bands of the ’30s and ’40s that led Roomful to forge the distinctive sound that has become the band’s trademark. A man who can play both sides of the fence\, lyrically tender or blisteringly hot\, Rich has a big\, warm tone that is always jam-packed with feeling. His melodic inventiveness reflects the depth and breadth of his wide-ranging influences. Rich worked with various local and high- school bands before beginning his long-term relationship with Roomful. \nCraig Thomas – Baritone and Tenor Sax Craig was born in Washington DC and grew up in Maryland. SUMMARY:The Lowest Pair
DESCRIPTION:The Lowest Pair—Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee—craft mesmerizing modern roots music through poetic songwriting\, intertwined voices\, and beautifully spare string arrangements\, balancing raw emotion with warmth\, nuance\, and an unmistakable musical chemistry. \nEnjoy an evening of live music in the relaxed\, lounge-like setting of Upstairs on Main\, where great music meets a casual atmosphere with the bar open throughout the event. \nLocation: Shalin Liu Performance Center Third Floor Lounge \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe Lowest Pair has questions. The duo\, made up of Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee\, know that we tend to see duality as a problem. We want life to be linear\, working through the dark to finally get to the light. Grief to joy\, despair to hope\, confusion to clarity––not a jangly cycle we can’t escape. But through their incandescent folk songs\, the Lowest Pair often ask: What if we sit with the mess? What if that’s not just more peaceful\, but more magical\, too? \n“Fare thee well and go to hell\, I love you and I’m mad at you. It’s such a theme in my life\,” Winter says\, then laughs. “Wishing things were different but loving all of it\, too.” \nOn their 8th album Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be\, the Lowest Pair prove that over the last dozen years together\, they’ve become some of modern roots music’s most mesmerizing\, thoughtful purveyors. Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists)\, the 10-track album puts the duo’s stark lyricism\, string-driven arrangements\, and raw compatibility on brilliant display. \n“We’re both trying to make space for each other rather than crowd each other out\,” Lee says\, reflecting on why the Lowest Pair works. “We’re doing a lot of listening and reacting to what the other person is doing.” Lee’s speaking voice is a comforting echo of his singing voice\, soft and precise. Winter talks like she sings\, too\, sweet and raspy. Heard together\, the effect is both soothing and scintillating\, like a crisp mountain stream smoothing rocks. \nThe Lowest Pair’s musicianship is another beautiful testament not just to playing that breathes\, but playing that listens. Winter\, who grew up in Arkansas but has lived in Washington State for the last two decades\, and Lee\, a Minnesota native\, first gained attention as poetic singer-songwriters on banjos. While their family of strings has expanded––Winter plays more guitar on the new record than she ever has before––their fundamental approach hasn’t: Respond to sounds and stories the other is making. \nThat focus on active listening anchored the recording of Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be\, too. After years of self-production and limiting instruments to those played by Winter and Lee themselves\, the duo felt ready to collaborate with a bigger circle. In addition to Martine helming boards\, musicians including Leif Karlstrom (fiddle)\, Sydney Nash (bass/piano) and Adam Roszkiewicz (guitar\, mandolin\, synth) joined the recording session. “It was really thrilling to be in the studio with that group because those are all really sharp listeners\,” says Winter. “I love us stripped back. That’s the essence of our songs\, but at this point\, recording wise\, I felt excited about letting somebody else paint with us.” \nAs a result\, Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be pulses with life. Album opener “Give It All Away” glows warm and bright with strings and synths as Winter and Lee consider harsh seasons and humanity’s short memories. “It’s this idea of cycles and knowing there’s dark and light\, and it’s going to change\,” says Winter. “When it’s good\, notice it. When it’s bad\, know it’s going to change. I spend a lot of time reminding myself that––and still being surprised by it.” \n“If I listen to somebody else’s record\, it’s easy for me to have favorite songs\, but if it’s something we’ve made\, it’s about all the pieces being in relationship to the other pieces\,” Lee says of the album. “It’s about being okay with the heaviness and seeing the light that’s associated with the darkness. I hope it helps people not feel alone in the heavy things.”

SUMMARY:Puss N Boots w/ Norah Jones\, Sasha Dobson & Catherine Popper
DESCRIPTION:IN 2008\, NORAH JONES\, SASHA DOBSON\, AND CATHERINE POPPER FORMED PUSS N BOOTS. \nInitially it was a vehicle for Jones and Dobson to play music together and try new things\, with Popper joining on bass shortly after. The trio played various New York clubs\, with a repertoire anchored in Americana\, country\, folk\, pop and rock. The band became an outlet for Jones\, Dobson and Popper to switch instruments\, and allowed them to showcase a different side of themselves than in their various solo and side projects. \nIn 2013\, some five years after the group began playing\, they signed with Blue Note Records and set out to assemble their debut record. Comprised of originals and covers\, studio recordings and live performances\, that debut was called No Fools\, No Fun. Released in the summer of 2014\, it was supported by a tour of the U.S. \nIn 2019\, the trio took the stage at the MusiCares charity event honoring Person of the Year Award recipient Dolly Parton\, and performed Parton’s “The Grass Is Blue”. Later that year Jones\, Dobson\, and Popper released their holiday album Dear Santa\, followed by their 2nd full length album Sister in 2020.

SUMMARY:Artful Conversations: John Sloan’s “Scavenger Rocks”
DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations \nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth.\nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nThe program will offer an in‑depth look at John Sloan’s Scavenger Rocks\, a recent acquisition that deepens our understanding of the artist’s long-standing ties to East Gloucester. The presentation begins with a brief overview of Sloan’s stays at the Red Cottage from 1914 to 1918\, a formative period that shaped many of his most compelling Cape Ann paintings. From there\, the talk turns to the granite outcropping near Niles Beach\, drawing on contemporary photographic documentation to illuminate the site’s distinctive forms and its role in Sloan’s artistic process\, offering a vivid\, tangible link between the artwork and the landscape that inspired it. \nDan Duffy and his wife Helene have been Innkeepers at the Beech Tree B&B in Rockport for 16 years. In this capacity\, he takes pride in serving as an ambassador of goodwill for travelers from around the world. He is passionate about showcasing our region’s rich history\, geographical uniqueness\, and artistic treasurers. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, Dan uses his experience connecting with visitors while deepening his own knowledge of the Museum and of the region’s vibrant social and cultural history.
