Mixing in elements of R&B\, funk\, pop\, and rock and\, later on\, dancehall and rap\, Third World’s style has been described as “reggae-fusion”. Singer Bunny Rugs described the band’s sound: “Strictly a reggae band\, no. Definitely a reggae band\, yes.” Guitarist Cat Coore said of their music: “The hybrid of various types of music is a natural thing because\, by growing up in Jamaica\, we know the direct roots of reggae and ska. At the same time we live in a country where you get to hear Chuck Berry\, Fats Domino and all the R & B artists.” Bassist Richard Daley said\, “We took roots reggae music and put branches on top of it”. \nThe genesis of Third World was originally formed in 1973 by guitarist/cellist Steven “Cat” Coore\, keyboardist Michael “Ibo” Cooper\, drummer Carl Barovier and singer Milton “Prilly” Hamilton all of Inner Circle\, along with bassist Colin “Oliver” Leslie. Tomorrows Children bass guitarist\, Richard Daley soon replaced Colin Leslie and Leslie teamed up with Darren Green to manage and organize the group. After a few months\, Barovier was replaced by Cornell Marshall\, and the group made its live debut that year at Jamaica’s independence celebration. They played in and around the Kingston club scene and on the hotel scene island wide\, making a name for themselves as one of the few fully self-contained bands around.\nWith 10 Grammy nominations and catalogue of charted hits spanning four decades\, Third World accolades include\, the 1986 United Nations Peace Medal\, 1992 and 1996 Jamaica Music Industry Awards for Best Show Band\, New York City Ambassador Award in November 2009 at Brooklyn Academy of Music (“BAM”)\, 2011 Excellence in Music at the Atlanta Caribbean Festival\, numerous awards and accolades from Martin’s International Reggae and World Music Awards\, in 2012 William Clark was awarded Ambassador at Caribbean American Heritage Awards in Washington DC\, “The Art of Reggae Music” award for 40 years of quality music and dedication at the 2013 staging of Jamaica Jazz and Blues in Montego Bay\, the Keys to the Cities of Atlanta and Key West\, National Black Arts Award of Merit 2013 and more.

Rivera\, Editor | Moritz Hans Laub\, Composer \nFrom the Filmmaker\nAs a documentarian I am always looking for stories that have multiple levels of meaning. Yank Tanks was a clever way of dissecting the cultural truth behind the Cuban Embargo. The Comedy Club was a not-so-subtle look at the corporatization of standup comedy and its effects on freedom of expression. Enduring Democracy explores economic opportunism and the dangers when\nthat intersects with racism. And Painting at the Edge is a story about an eco-warrior that shows us how to forge a new relationship to nature. On the surface these films might seem as simple as “how do you keep an old car running without spare parts” but one level below there is a bigger question. I met Tony Foster when I was hired to produce a video about the opening of his museum in Palo Alto\, CA. My dad\, Alfred was a master watercolour painter and so when I saw Tony’s paintings\, I immediately recognized the talent in the work. Watercolour is by far the most difficult and unforgiving medium to paint in – believe me I tried! At his museum opening I was standing in front of one of the largest paintings I’ve ever seen of the Grand Canyon. Someone next to me asked what I thought of the painting. I replied “it’s a masterpiece but the colors look very pop art.” “Well\, I used to make pop art!” I turned to see it was Tony Foster himself. From that moment we had a trusting relationship because I had dared to critique the master directly. After several years of discussions about the shape of the film\, Tony and I decided to make the documentary about his life together. As a filmmaker this has been the most challenging adventure I have ever embarked upon. Most film production teams don’t need to worry about where they are going to charge their batteries or how much water is needed for an 8-day canoe trip. Besides the challenge and rigors of filming in the wilderness how do you tell a story about such a singular man? Tony was set on making the film while he was working in the wild\, so we packed the cameras\, tents and sleeping bags and made a film. The planet stands on the edge of an environmental collapse. We must change our relationship to our only home or very soon it could be uninhabitable. Tony is the perfect messenger for those of us looking for a better way and hopefully for those that need the message most.

This exclusive evening on the water will bring together MRWC’s donors\, supporters\, and friends for a memorable experience at the place where the Merrimack River meets the sea. \nThe Sunset Sail is more than a beautiful evening aboard a historic schooner. It is a chance to gather in community\, celebrate the Merrimack River\, and look ahead to a cleaner\, safer future for Newburyport Harbor and the watershed we share. Guests can connect with MRWC’s leadership on the communities\, wildlife\, and working waterfronts that depend on clean water — and the shared responsibility we all have to protect it. \nThis event also comes at an important moment for MRWC’s work in Newburyport. After several years of concerning results in our water quality monitoring by our team and volunteers\, we are launching an investigation into persistent high bacteria levels in Newburyport Harbor. This Sunset Sail helps to support the science\, advocacy\, and community partnerships needed to better understand these challenges and work toward long-term solutions. \nGuests will sail aboard the Schooner Ardelle\, a beautiful historic vessel built and captained by Harold A. Burnham\, a master shipwright who has built several prominent local schooners. DESCRIPTION:Samara Joy has emerged as one of the most extraordinary voices in contemporary jazz\, achieving a level of acclaim and visibility rarely seen at such a young age. At just 26\, the Bronx-born vocalist has earned five GRAMMY Awards—including Best New Artist—along with an NAACP Image Award\, signaling her arrival as a defining artist of her generation. With a sound rooted deeply in jazz tradition and a presence that resonates across generations\, Joy has become a powerful ambassador for classic American music in the modern era. \nA native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. The lecture will examine how disputes over cargo\, salvage\, and prize cases during the period tested and refined the young nation’s legal system. Judge Young will also discuss the pivotal role played by Judge John Davis in establishing practical precedents for handling these cases — precedents that would go on to influence the broader framework of American admiralty law. \nAbout the Speaker: \nThe Honorable William G. Young has served as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts since 1985\, following eight years on the Massachusetts Superior Court. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School\, he served as a U.S. Army officer before beginning his legal career as law clerk to Chief Justice Raymond S. Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He later practiced law with Bingham\, Dana & Gould and served as Special Assistant Attorney General and Chief Counsel to Governor Francis W. Sargent. An acclaimed teacher of evidence and trial advocacy\, Judge Young has taught at Harvard\, Boston College\, and Boston University. He is also a prolific legal scholar and the author of several influential works on evidence\, trial practice\, and federal jurisprudence.

DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

DESCRIPTION:Mike Campbell was a member\, architect and co-captain of the Heartbreakers\, a band he co-founded with Tom Petty\, whom he met in a Gainesville\, Florida carport in 1972. \nWith special guest Sarah Lee Guthrie \nThe Heartbreakers lead guitarist\, Campbell co-wrote many of the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers hits and also co-produced many of their albums – in addition to penning songs for Don Henley (“Boys of Summer”)\, Bob Dylan\, Stevie Nicks and playing on records by Aretha Franklin\, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. \nIn 2018\, Campbell joined Fleetwood Mac’s World Tour on lead guitar and in 2020\, Campbell released Wreckless Abandon\, the first album by The Dirty Knobs\, a group that was Campbell’s longtime side project but is now his primary musical focus. They released their second LP External Combustion in 2022 and toured the USA\, including runs opening for both Chris Stapleton and The Who. In 2024\, their third album Vagabonds\, Virgins & Misfits was the subject of extensive critical acclaim from NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” Rolling Stone\, The Los Angeles Times\, Consequence\, Salon and more. DESCRIPTION:Blues icon. Soul man. Rock and roller. Robert Cray is all these things – and more. \nThe Georgia born\, Washington-raised musician first picked up a guitar after seeing The Beatles on TV then\, having witnessed Jimi Hendrix perform in Seattle\, determined that his destiny would also follow a similar path. And so he has: across the past half century Robert Cray’s developed into one of American music’s most singular artists. \n“I guess you’d have to say that we were lucky\,” reflects Cray on his life in music\, “because\, growing up in the 1960s\, the different music played on the radio really opened us up. I mean\, we even had Albert Collins play our high School graduation party.” \nFrom forming a teenage garage band\, through to striding the stage alongside several of the world’s greatest guitarists\, Robert Cray’s story is one of struggle and commitment. Struggle and commitment that led to Cray enjoying phenomenal success – selling millions of albums and countless concert tickets\, winning five Grammy Awards\, being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame\, recipient of the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award\, designing two signature model Fender guitars – yet for Robert what’s always mattered most is the music. Every note he plays counts\, every song he sings is delivered as if it is his last: integrity and intensity are what has guided Cray’s musical career. He has never cheapened his output or delivered a substandard performance. Indeed\, his commitment to making music of the highest standard has won Cray both a loyal audience and the respect of many of popular music’s most legendary figures. \nThink about it: Robert Cray has shared stage and/or studio with the likes of John Lee Hooker\, Muddy Waters\, B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Chuck Berry\, Albert Collins\, The Rolling Stones\, Eric Clapton\, Tina Turner\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, the Memphis Horns and Hi Rhythm Section. Cray’s stinging guitar playing and soulful voice\, his skills as a band leader and performer\, mark him as keeper of the flame for American roots music\, an artist who never fails to deliver. \n“We were so lucky just be able to see them\,” says Cray of trading guitar licks on stage with legends of blues\, rock and soul\, “let alone share the stage with them – what an experience!” \nCray’s rise to the top was\, like his music\, a slow burn\, he first building a following in small towns across the Pacific Northwest. Even before Cray had a record deal he enjoyed local hero status – so much so in 1978 he was cast (as a musician) in Animal House\, the blockbuster comedy that made John Belushi famous. 1978 was also the year Cray recorded his debut album\, Who’s Been Talkin’\, although Tomato Records’ internal problems held up Talkin’s release until 1980. And then\, just as Talkin’ was winning great reviews\, Tomato collapsed into bankruptcy. Got the blues? Young Robert certainly could have claimed he had them. But Cray isn’t given to complaining\, instead he persevered\, committed then\, as he is now\, to taking his music to the people. \nAfter Tomato\, Cray and his band – today consisting of Richard Cousins (bass guitar – there since high school days)\, Dover Weinberg (keyboards) and Les Falconer (drums) – used the momentum the album gave them to play further afield. By now Cray was buddies with a young guitarist from Texas: Stevie Ray Vaughan. \n“We played in 1979 at the San Francisco Blues Festival\,” recalls Cray\, “and I watched Stevie’s show and he’s just smoking. Afterwards Richard and I went up and chatted with him and we just hit it off. Stevie was great – if we were in Austin he’d always come and join us on stage.” \nSigning to Hightone\, Cray’s 1983 album Bad Influence established him internationally: he was invited to play Carnegie Hall\, toured Europe\, later finding Eric Clapton recording Bad Influence’s \ntitle track. 1985 saw Cray’s False Accusations album increase his standing as the foremost singer of blues noir songs\, while that year’s Showdown! – a sizzling collaboration with guitarists’ Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland – won Robert huge acclaim from blues musicians and fans: the new guy’s the real deal! Signing to Mercury Records\, Cray’s 1986 album Strong Persuader ensured he became the first blues/soul musician to breakthrough in the MTV era. \nStrong Persuader won Cray rave reviews from pop and rock critics\, topped charts worldwide\, saw Cray grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and winning the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording in 1988. Strong Persuader\, with its songs of infidelity\, guilt and unease\, while not in any sense conventional Top 40 music\, proved so strong an album it broke through barriers\, sold millions of copies and would prove extremely influential (2026 being the 40th anniversary.) Cray’s \nbreakthrough allowed both young and older blues and soul musicians to gain wide attention and radio play: John Lee Hooker’s career resurrection came soon after with The Healer\, and Robert plays on that seminal album. \n“It was great to be able to travel around the world\,” says Cray of Strong Persuader’s success. “It afforded us a lot of great opportunities that we were lucky to experience.” \nCray’s being modest here: suddenly he found himself the hottest guitarist working – Tina Turner invited Robert to support her huge European tour (every night\, after playing with his band\, Cray would join Tina on stage to play A Change Is Gonna Come)\, then Keith Richards called\, requesting Cray join the band backing Chuck Berry for Taylor Hackford’s celebratory feature length documentary Hail Hail Rock ‘N’ Roll. Here Cray not only got to play with the mercurial Berry (+Linda Ronstadt and Etta James\, amongst many notable artists)\, he also formed a friendship with Steve Jordan\, then drummer for the project and Richards’ solo band. \nNow internationally famous\, Cray found himself in intense demand: he toured with The Stones and played with B.B King\, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. Headlining in noted music festivals – these included Glastonbury in the UK and Crossroads Guitar Festival in the US – and kept developing his sound over a selection of strong albums across the 1990s. Cray’s songwriting has addressed ageing\, love\, loneliness\, domestic turmoil and US politics. \nAs an artist Robert Cray’s aged like fine wine – his voice has developed a greater range and expressiveness\, this he’s put to use on masterful interpretations of such Southern soul standards as I Forgot To Be Your Lover (William Bell)\, Your Good Thing Is About To End (Mable John) and Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Otis Redding). At the same time\, Cray’s guitar playing now possesses an additional depth\, a growl that can hint at a caress then signal emotional upheaval. \nHis recent run of albums – 2014’s In My Soul\, 2017’s Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm and 2020’s masterful That’s What I Heard (all produced by Steve Jordan: now the Stones’ drummer) – are amongst the very finest he’s made. Every song here is deeply felt\, whether an agonised song of loss\, an angry protest number\, or a dance tune that gets audiences pumping (My Baby Likes To Boogaloo is great funky fun). \nAcross five decades Robert Cray has created a richly inclusive American music\, revitalising both blues and soul while rocking hard with the very best.
