SUMMARY:Event: The Salem Witch Trials 1692: After-Hours Tour
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn person event\nLocation: Witch Trials gallery \nMembers and Salem residents $20; nonmembers $50 \nAll other museum galleries will be closed during the tour. \nJoin us after hours for a special curator-led tour of The Salem Witch Trials 1692. Explore the extraordinary series of events between June 1692 and March 1693 that led to the deaths of 25 innocent women\, men and children who were wrongfully convicted of crimes. More than 300 years later\, the personal tragedies and grievous wrongs that occurred still provoke us to reflect and reckon with the experiences of those involved. \nThis ongoing installation tells this story through tangible fragments directly tied to people in Salem and nearby communities in the late 17th century. A handwritten petition\, a carved loom\, a walking stick — each illuminates an aspect of individuals who lived through Salem’s witch trials and serves as a reminder of the real people impacted by these harrowing events. Don’t miss this chance to ask the exhibition curators your questions!

On the bill for October 3rd we have Joey Madison\, Prateek and Grace Givertz. GA Seating. \nJoey Madison \nJoey Madison is a dynamic and soulful artist whose musical journey is a testament to passion\, versatility\, and dedication. With a deep-rooted love for soul\, funk\, and jazz\, Joey’s music effortlessly blends genres\, creating a unique sound that resonates with authenticity. Drawing from personal experiences and emotions\, Joey’s songwriting reflects themes of love\, heartache\, and self-discovery. Her performances are captivating\, having graced iconic stages such as Carnegie Hall\, MGM Music Hall\, and Rockwood Music Hall. Joey has shared the stage with acclaimed artists like Allen Stone\, further solidifying her place in the music world. Joey Madison’s artistry has been shaped by her time at Berklee College of Music\, where she has honed her skills and collaborated with fellow musicians. Her experience extends beyond live performances to the creation of deeply personal music\, like her debut EP Same Time Tomorrow\, which explores the complexities of unreciprocated love. Joey’s ability to connect with audiences is evident in her performances\, ranging from intimate ensembles and band showcases to large-scale venues. \nwww.joeyymadison.wixsite.com/joey-madison \nPrateek \nWith his heartbreakingly powerful voice and incisive lyrics\, Prateek (pruh – TEEK) has been described as “Not just any guy with a guitar…” by The Boston Globe. When you hear his music\, you’ll believe it too. Evolving away from the spare\, Dylan-esque sound of his first EP\, Prateek’s latest album “‘Til June” adds gritty electric guitars\, silvery backing vocals\, and a driving rhythm section\, all in service of his tightly written\, evocative songcraft. Prateek has been a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist and has been nominated for Singer-Songwriter of the Year at both the New England Music Awards and the Boston Music Awards. His music has seen rotation all over the radio including Sirius XM\, 98.9 WERS\, and 92.5 The River. Listen to “‘Til June” now wherever music is sold or streamed. \nwww.prateeksongs.com \nGrace Givertz \nHailing from the sunshine state of Florida\, Grace Givertz captivates audiences with her indie folk compositions\, blending earworm melodies with heartfelt storytelling. As a multi-instrumentalist\, she infuses her music with a diverse array of sounds\, weaving folk\, Americana\, and indie rock into a tapestry uniquely her own. \nDrawing inspiration from her personal journey living with chronic illness\, Givertz’s music resonates with raw emotion and introspection. Her experiences infuse her songs with depth and authenticity\, inviting listeners to explore themes of resilience and vulnerability. \nGrace Givertz showcases her multi-instrumentalism on her debut album\, Year of the Horse\, playing guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, and harmonica in addition to vocals. Year of the Horse showcases Grace’s ability to turn lemons in to lemonade through song. “…The only real option is to smile at how much she packs into a tiny punch of a song\,” Nina Corcoran writes in digboston. \nShe has also been heavily involved with the Black Opry\, an organization dedicated to highlighting and supporting Black musicians in the country music industry. In 2023\, this lead to her participating in WXPN’s Black Opry Residency in Philadelphia. \nIn a groundbreaking move\, Givertz is currently working on her sophomore album\, which exclusively features BIPOC\, LGBTQ+\, and/or disabled musicians. This collaborative effort not only amplifies underrepresented voices but also underscores her commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the music industry. \nGivertz’s talent shines bright\, earning her acclaim for her captivating performances. She’s been nominated for Boston Music Awards and received the City of Boston’s Extraordinary Women Award for her contributions to music and community. Beyond accolades\, she shares her expertise through songwriting workshops\, including sessions with the Harvard Ed Portal\, empowering others to authentically express themselves. \nGrace Givertz’s melodies resonate as beacons of authenticity\, illuminating the indie folk landscape and reminding us of the enduring power of storytelling through song. \nwww.gracegivertz.com

SUMMARY:Convivencia – A Melopoeia
DESCRIPTION:The time of Convivencia in Spain (800 to 1492) was a period of cultural harmony shared by three faiths. The poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca and others draw inspiration from the poets of that earlier time. Convivencia translates to ‘living together’. This poetry…made a profound impact on Spain’s Generation of ’27\, but\, above all\, influenced the work of Federico Garcia. \nThe Diminished Prophets present the poetry and song of Federico Garcia Lorca and contemporary poetry inspired by him. The words are read by renowned poets\, Rhina Espaillat and Alfred Nicol\, the guitar accompaniment is by John Tavano\, with Roger Kimball on bass and Shannon Muhs on vocals.

SUMMARY:MAY ERLEWINE
DESCRIPTION:One of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters\, May Erlewine has a gift for writing songs of substance that feel both fresh and soulfully familiar. Balancing her heartbreak with an empowered and emboldened spirit\, she stresses the importance of environmental advocacy\, social justice\, creative empowerment and community building as necessary work in our world. \nMay Erleine’s ability to emotionally engage with an audience has earned her a dedicated following far beyond her Michigan roots. In her quest to find her most authentic self\, Erlewine gifts each listener with a powerful\, emotional experience that immediately connects us. \nRaised in a home full of art and music\, Erlewine began writing songs at a very young age. As a teenager she hitchhiked across the country\, honing her skills as a performer and absorbing the kind of stories and landscapes that would inform her music. Her songs show a very real connection and concern with everyday folk. Drawing from a wide variety of influences to create her sound\, lyrically\, her songs are rooted in hard-wrought wisdom\, joy and sorrow\, simplicity and stories from her own experiences. They wash over the audience like a tender hug. May is a magnetic solo performer and is also often supported by her carefully chosen backing bands. \nErlewine uses her music as a platform for positive change. She considers her job a service-oriented one and carries the torch of the folk-singer activist. Her voice on stage encourages connectedness and stresses the importance of environmental advocacy\, social justice\, creative empowerment and community building as necessary work for all of us. \nErlewine’s music has touched people all over the world. Her words have held solace for weary hearts\, offered a light in the darkness\, and held space for the pain and joy of being alive in these times. She is a true artist\, an anthem\, and another example of why we need to listen to women. We need to hear these stories. When she starts to sing\, there’s no way around it: The time is now. \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.
