DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 20\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Once the summer home of Helen Stevens Coolidge and John Gardner Coolidge—a diplomat and descendant of Thomas Jefferson and nephew of Isabella Stewart Gardner—the historic house offers a unique glimpse into the lifestyle\, travels\, and tastes of a well-connected New England family. \nParticipants will begin with a short walk from our Garden Gateway Center and explore the first floor of the house. Every item in the home is a historic collection piece original to the couple and beautifully conserved. \nThe tour will last approximately 50-60 minutes. Today\, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches\, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members\, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag\, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe. He asks how the community can continue to grow and more broadly\, what it means to be Indigenous. \nAbout the Book \nIn Nothing More of This Land\, Lee weaves his family story into a panoramic narrative of Indigenous life around the world. He takes us from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the icy Alaskan tundra\, the smoky forests of Northern California to the halls of the United Nations and beyond. Along the way\, he meets activists fighting to protect their land\, families clashing with their own tribal leaders and communities working to reclaim tradition. SUMMARY:Boundless: The Art of the Book
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Dates: July 17-August 24\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, July 20\, 5pm-7pm \nThis dynamic exhibition explores the rich and ever-evolving world of the book as an art form. Featuring artist books\, altered books\, and book illustration\, “Boundless” showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling\, visual poetry\, personal narratives\, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang\, twist\, stand\, open like advent calendars\, or defy conventional forms altogether. \nThe exhibition presents a wide array of techniques\, including letterpress\, etching\, monoprint\, painting\, photography\, and mixed media. Through these varied practices\, artists explore themes of memory\, imagination\, identity\, and the contemporary moment. \n“Boundless” features contributions from a distinguished group of 29 artists\, including local creatives\, university faculty\, and artists affiliated with book arts communities throughout New England and beyond—Boston\, Philadelphia\, New York\, New Hampshire\, and Maine. \nExhibiting Artists:\nRen Barnes\, Stevens Brosnihan\, Rachel Church\, Pamela Courtleigh\, Haig Demarjian\, Mary Dewey\, Madge Evers\, Lynda Fatalo\, Cristina Hajosy\, Hannah Jacoby-Brooks\, Linda Kauss\, Giles Laroche\, Kelle Louaillier\, Leslie Lyman\, Fred Lynch\, Claire B. SUMMARY:Girls on Adventure!
DESCRIPTION:Girls on Adventure offers a unique opportunity for young women entering 7th\, 8th\, or 9th grade to immerse themselves in the world of the maritime sector\, meet inspiring professionals whose work focuses on the sea\, and learn the art of sailing aboard an authentic Tall Ship\, the 1926 Schooner Adventure. \nFrom July 15 – Friday\, Aug. 1\, participants will meet for a total of twelve\, five-hour sessions. In these sessions\, students will meet women working in marine and marine-related fields during visits to sites in Gloucester and Essex as well as during guest visits aboard Adventure. Field trips to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum\, GMGI\, and Applied Materials\, will provide hands-on learning and insights into the diverse career paths available in the maritime industry. \nCentral to the program is the hands-on experience aboard the iconic Schooner Adventure\, a 122’ traditionally-rigged fishing sailboat. Under the guidance of our experienced crew\, participants will learn the ropes of sailing through three dockside training days and six training sails\, mastering essential skills while forging lasting friendships. As the culmination of their journey\, Girls on Adventure participants will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound expertise by inviting friends and family for an evening sail in Gloucester Harbor.

DESCRIPTION:Documentary Sketching with Yetti Frenkel\nFour Tuesdays\, July 8\, – 29 10:00am–1:00pm | Meet at NAA\n$225 for NAA members / $275 non-members\nThis class will sketch as a group\, picking a new location each week. Possible locations include the Tannery\, the courthouse\, the waterfront\, a local coffeehouse\, pub\, or park. The idea is to increase our powers of observation and quickly capture the essence of a scene. People who want to improve their drawing or be “in the moment” intensely will enjoy this class. Students will be encouraged to find a topic that excites them and to create a documentary series. This class will be held on July 8\, July 15\, July 22\, July 29.
