SUMMARY:Artist Demonstration: Bill Lane
DESCRIPTION:Come see one of our favorite artists in their element as he paints and educates the public about his process. Enjoy a cash bar and free snacks while you watch his creation come to life. \nBill Lane is a painter who primarily uses watercolor to capture the beauty of natural light in his works. He owns a gallery in Chatham\, MA and has won numerous awards\, including Best in Show at Spring Bull Gallery in 2016. \n“Everyday scenes intrigue me the most; be it a barren landscape\, boats in the harbor or city life on a busy day. I observe how the light plays into the scene and reflects off the subjects. I work to capture that light while enhancing my point-of-interest in the painting.” – Bill Lane \nIn partnership with Rockport Art Association.

SUMMARY:Angel Olsen (Solo): Songs From The Archive
DESCRIPTION:WITH KYLE RAY ON SUPPORT \nAngel Olsen is a songwriter\, musician\, performer and director of music videos. She delivers vulnerable songs with a distinctive warble informed by vintage country. Her early\, spare\, acoustic songs grew increasingly lush and dramatic across her several albums. Olsen debuted with the reverb-heavy solo indie folk of 2010’s Strange Cacti\, expanding to an alt-country power trio for her third album\, 2014’s Burn Your Fire for No Witness\, her Billboard 200 debut. Two years later\, My Woman reached a career-high number 47 on the chart. While maintaining an intimate character and a haunting sound reinforced by stylized echo\, Olsen recorded 2019’s All Mirrors with a 14-piece orchestra. The follow-up\, 2020’s Whole New Mess\, offered an overhauled solo version of All Mirrors that included a pair of original songs. Inspired by both love and loss tied up in coming out as queer\, her sixth studio album\, Big Time\, followed in 2022. \nShe has performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\, Jimmy Kimmel Live!\, and Austin City Limits TV\, and has been profiled in The New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Pitchfork\, to name a few. Her albums are regularly regarded as some of the highest lauded albums each year of their release. Olsen has collaborated with artists including Mark Ronson\, Sharon Van Etten\, Cass McCombs\, Hamilton Leithauser\, Marissa Nadler\, Jim James\, Madi Diaz\, and more. \nOn this tour\, Angel will be performing solo\, exploring songs from her entire catalog\, digging into songs and eras she does not often get to when performing with her band. \n– excerpts taken from Fred Thomas\, All Music

Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions\, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. The video of their single\, “En tu órbita\,” was featured in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest Newsletter (out of 6\,600 submissions)! \nSol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic\, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance\, laugh\, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. Since 1994\, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet in the Kennedy Center\, the Getty Museum\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as countless festivals. \nSol y Canto’s mission is to create music and performances that move\, delight\, excite and connect – connect the audience to the richness of Latin American culture; connect individuals\, Hispanic and non-Hispanic\, to each other through shared experience of music\, poetry\, humor and a joyful\, playful vibe; and connect us all to our hopes and visions of a better world. \nBrian and Rosi Amador are the proud parents of singer-songwriter Alisa Amador\, a rising star musical artist and winner of the 2022 NPR Tiny Desk Competition\, who grew up performing with her parents. \nIG @SolyCanto\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/SolyCanto \nPhoto Credit: Sasha Pedro \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.

SUMMARY:The 20th Anniversary Newburyport Documentary Film Festival (NBPT DOCU FEST)
DESCRIPTION:Each September\, the seaside hamlet of Newburyport comes alive\, uniting filmmakers and audiences to celebrate this truly original American form of narrative storytelling.  The 20th Anniversary version of the NBPT DOCU FEST (September 20-22\, 2024) will feature over 30 films from local\, regional\, national\, and international filmmakers.  Since the first recognized documentary over 100 years ago (1922’s Nanook of the North)\, audiences have enjoyed and learned about multiple perspectives on human life.  Documentaries give the world a better understanding of past events and a glimpse of what we might face. \nNBPT DOCU FEST was established in 2004 as Massachusetts’ first all-documentary film festival\, featuring high-caliber\, thought-provoking documentary films from established and emerging filmmakers. Regarded as a “Filmmakers Film Festival\,” more than 500 films have been featured over 19 seasons\, some of which have received Oscar nominations. Multiple opportunities for audiences include post-screening Q&A with filmmakers\, pre-post screening receptions\, and a Filmmakers Roundtable as well as ‘First Look” – a presentation of early-stage work of yet-to-be-completed films. \nThe Festival line-up is announced mid-summer.  Tickets and Festival passes go on sale in mid-August; tickets range from $12-18.  Please visit https://www.nbptdocufest.org/ for all details and information.

SUMMARY:Jake Johannsen
DESCRIPTION:A native of Iowa\, Jake Johannsen spent three years at Iowa State University dabbling in veterinarian science and chemical engineering before moving to San Francisco and trying his hand at comedy. Jake sought to make his comedic mark on the city at a time when San Francisco was fostering the likes of young talents such as Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Carvey. Jake made his own comedy debut during an open mic night at San Francisco’s Cobbs Comedy Club. Four years later\, in 1986\, he won the 11th Annual San Francisco Stand-Up Comedian Competition. \nA self-confessed raconteur of weird stories\, it’s no wonder that Jake is one of David Letterman’s favorite comics. With forty-four Letterman appearances under his belt\, more than any other comic\, (not to mention a handful of Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, and Politically Incorrect gigs) Jake is no stranger to late night television. His late night appearances gave Jake the exposure he needed to land his very own HBO comedy special\, This’ll Take About An Hour. Jake received incredible reviews\, strong ratings\, and a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Writing in an Entertainment Special. People Magazine rated the special as one of the “ten best television shows of the year\,” and TV Guide named it one of the “50 Funniest Moments of TV.” \nJake is also making his mark on the feature world. Jake appeared on the big screen next to Bruce Willis in the Alan Rudolph film Breakfast of Champions. Jake first worked with Rudolph on the film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle\, in which he co-starred in a cast that included Matthew Broderick\, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Campbell Scott. \nJake’s bizarre take on life and his uniquely intelligent style have made him a regular at comedy clubs all over the country and a former host of Comedy Central’s Two Drink Minimum. Jake has had numerous television appearances as well as his own Comedy Central 1⁄2 hour special. Additionally\, his Comedy Special entitled “i Love You” aired on Netflix and Showtime. Since first picking up a guitar at 10 years old\, the New York native has released 10 albums between his solo career and the Pousette-Dart Band. \n“Pousette-Dart’s compositions brim with optimism\, introspection\, and subtle grace.” – Performing Songwriter \nThe Pousette-Dart Band carved a place in the landscape of American music in the 1970s. He’s turned out five solo albums including 2015’s “TALK”\, a cohesive selection of his best songs to date. He has co-written with some of the finest writers in the country including Darrell Scott\, Gary Nicholson\, Jaime Kyle\, John Bohlinger\, Angelo\, Sally Barris and Angela Kaset. Jon is currently touring solo\, duo and with his highly entertaining band featuring Steve Roues on bass and harmony vocals and Jim Chapdelaine on guitar/vocals\, who co-produced several of Jon’s records. Jon’s continued writing and travels have kept him engaged in Nashville where the original bands first albums were recorded with Norbert Putnam. He has continued performing nationally and writing steadily with many of the finest writers that embody the best of the American music scene.
