SUMMARY:The 20th Anniversary Newburyport Documentary Film Festival (NBPT DOCU FEST)
DESCRIPTION:Each September\, the seaside hamlet of Newburyport comes alive\, uniting filmmakers and audiences to celebrate this truly original American form of narrative storytelling.  The 20th Anniversary version of the NBPT DOCU FEST (September 20-22\, 2024) will feature over 30 films from local\, regional\, national\, and international filmmakers.  Since the first recognized documentary over 100 years ago (1922’s Nanook of the North)\, audiences have enjoyed and learned about multiple perspectives on human life.  Documentaries give the world a better understanding of past events and a glimpse of what we might face. \nNBPT DOCU FEST was established in 2004 as Massachusetts’ first all-documentary film festival\, featuring high-caliber\, thought-provoking documentary films from established and emerging filmmakers. Regarded as a “Filmmakers Film Festival\,” more than 500 films have been featured over 19 seasons\, some of which have received Oscar nominations. Multiple opportunities for audiences include post-screening Q&A with filmmakers\, pre-post screening receptions\, and a Filmmakers Roundtable as well as ‘First Look” – a presentation of early-stage work of yet-to-be-completed films. \nThe Festival line-up is announced mid-summer.  Tickets and Festival passes go on sale in mid-August; tickets range from $12-18.  Please visit https://www.nbptdocufest.org/ for all details and information.

SUMMARY:Rosanne Cash
DESCRIPTION:One of the country’s pre-eminent singer-songwriters\, Rosanne Cash has released 15 albums of extraordinary songs that have earned four Grammy Awards and 12 additional nominations. \nCash is also an author whose four books include the best-selling memoir Composed\, which the Chicago Tribune called “one of the best accounts of an American life you’ll likely ever read.” Her essays have appeared in The New York Times\, Rolling Stone\, Oxford American\, The Nation\, and many more print and online publications. Her most recent book\, Bird on a Blade (2018)\, was published by University OF Texas Press\, combining images by acclaimed artist Dan Rizzie with Cash’s lyrics. In addition to regular touring\, Cash has partnered in programming collaborations with Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, SFJAZZ\, the Minnesota Orchestra\, and the Library of Congress. She served as artist-in-residence at New York University and in 2018 and 2023 she was a resident artistic director at SFJAZZ. \nAlong with many other honors and awards\, Cash received the 2021 Edward MacDowell Medal\, awarded since 1960 to an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to American culture. She is the first woman composer to receive this prestigious honor. Last month she was elected as an Honorary American member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. \n‘I consider artists to be in the service industry; the premier service industry for the heart and soul. I am curious to a pathological degree and the Sword of Time hangs over me\, and those two things— curiosity and the hourglass— make me feel more urgent than ever to connect\, to find community\, and to create. It doesn’t matter what the world thinks\, it only matters that what is unsaid and what is unseen is given form and has a voice.’

SUMMARY:BLKBOK
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Detroit’s inner-city\, BLKBOK (born Charles Wilson IIl)\, grew up in a music-filled house. While his parents and siblings were all musically inclined little Charles could always be found walking his chubby fingers up and down the piano keys. His Mom had no choice but to nurture her baby’s keyboard obsession and by the time he was 8\, BLKBOK was an acclaimed piano prodigy\, winning statewide accolades and college-level competitions. \nWhen it came to music\, most of the kids he grew up with pursued hip-hop adopting rapper names. However\, it’s no coincidence that Charles chose the name BLKBOK\, which echoes that of one of the greatest pianists and composers of all time. The tag is also an apt reflection of the elements that have contributed to the artist’s identity and symbolizes his colorful journey from pop and hip-hop culture to his critically acclaimed\, neo-classical debut album Black Book\, and various Mixtape projects and collaborations. \nBLKBOK is no stranger to the industry grind\, having hit the road throughout his career as a lead pianist or musical director with artists including Rihanna\, Justin Timberlake\, Demi Lovato\, Cirque Du Soleil\, John Mayer and more. BLKBOK’s explosive and immersive live music performances engage his audience with his incredible talent and channels his experience from sharing the stage with the World’s biggest performers. \nBLKBOK’s critically-acclaimed debut album Black Book\, served as a founding cornerstone at the Juneteenth Foundation’s Freedom Concert. His first Mixtape release\, (VRARI\, and current Mixtape project Angels Watching Over Me\, with world-renowned tenor Lawrence Brownlee\, illustrate the innovative and disruptive musical landscape that is BLKBOK.

SUMMARY:Jesse Dayton
DESCRIPTION:9/15/24\nReserved Table Floor seats\, Reserved Rail Stools\, G.A Standing. 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. $30-$20 \nJesse Dayton\, “…a towering figure in the realm of outlaw country…” Tinnitist\, serves up his unique brand of Texas blues with his new album\, “The Hard Way Blues\,” produced by Shooter Jennings. This album made an impressive debut at #2 on the Billboard Blues chart\, behind only Slash’s juggernaut “Orgy of the Damned.” The Beaumont native’s career\, spanning multiple decades\, showcases his versatility as a chart-topping songwriter\, guitar virtuoso\, author\, frontman\, sideman\, producer\, and relentless road warrior. From his early days with the Road Kings\, where he seamlessly blended Texas Rockabilly and Country with Punk Rock’s raw energy\, Dayton has been a trailblazer. His innovative style earned him critical acclaim and paved the way for collaborations with music’s legends. Over the years\, his partnerships have included blues sensation Samantha Fish on the Grammy-nominated “Death Wish Blues\,” country icons like Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings; Johnny Cash and Glenn Campbell\, rock rebels such as Duff McKagan and Glenn Danzig\, and visionary horror filmmaker Rob Zombie. Amidst this diverse body of work\, Dayton’s solo albums stand as a testament to his genre- defying artistry\, solidifying his reputation as a roots-rock renaissance man. \nCollaborating with Shooter Jennings\, renowned for his Grammy-winning work with artists Brandi Carlisle and Tanya Tucker\, Jesse Dayton once again evolves with The Hard Way Blues. Building on his signature outlaw sound\, Dayton explains\, “I wanted to make something that reflected where I’m at right now; so\, we turned a musical corner and embraced a big sound with a lot of ripping\, bluesy guitar leads. Sometimes\, it sounds like Freddie King. Sometimes\, it sounds like Jimmy Page. This record was completely liberating for me because it goes back to so many of my longtime influences. I don’t care about genres\, trends\, or buzz words — I just care about being truthful to my own vision\, and that’s what The Hard Way Blues allowed me to do.” Crafted in the heart of Hollywood\, ” The Hard Way Blues stands as a testament to Dayton’s esteemed career\, meticulously blending his rowdy spirit with timeless influences and showcasing his versatility and artistry in an irresistibly melodic collection of American music.

SUMMARY:Kevin Farley
DESCRIPTION:Born in Madison\, Wisconsin\, Kevin Farley studied at the famous Second City in Chicago. Not long after\, he appeared in films such as Black Sheep (with his brother Chris Farley) and The Waterboy with Adam Sandler. Soon after\, Farley landed a starring role as “Doug Linus” on MTV’s sitcom 2gether where he was met with rave reviews. \nFarley then went on to star with top billing in the feature films An American Carol and White Knight. Other films to his credit are Crowning Jules\, Frat Pack\, and Joe Dirt 2. His TV guest appearances have been on Hawaii Five-O\, Curb Your Enthusiasm\, Rules of Engagement\, The Neighbors\, Just Shoot Me\, United States of Tara\, to name a few. \nFarley moved behind the camera as co-writer and co-director of Hollywood & Wine\, which takes an irreverent look at an actress struggling in Hollywood. In addition\, Farley directed the comedy Paranormal Movie. The film pokes fun at the “found footage” horror\, a sub-genre popular with moviegoers today. To his credit\, and met with high praise in all the national reviews\, Farley co-executive produced the heartwarming “I Am Chris Farley”\, the first feature-length biographical documentary about his brother Chris\, the late comedy legend. \nPresently Farley is co-starring in F is for Family – a Netflix comedy series and in CMT’s new series Still the King. When Farley is not writing screenplays\, producing or directing\, or on set filming\, he regularly embraces the stage in stand-up comedy. Farley usually appears as the headline act nationwide in clubs such as The Laugh Factory\, The Comedy Store\, and The Improv\, but he has also opened for David Spade\, Chris Rock\, Norm MacDonald\, Jeff Ross\, Todd Glass\, Kevin Nealon\, and Jeff Richards. Along the lines of stand-up comedy\, Farley starred in a New York musical about comedians called; HA! The Musical. \nFarley has hosted many live shows and has been featured on The Today Show\, The View\, Extra\, Fox News\, and countless radio shows. Farley resides in Los Angeles\, California and he is involved with the non-profit organization The American Irish Fund. \nKevin Farley has truly established himself as a comedic presence both on the big screen and off. Multi-tasking as a comedian\, actor\, writer\, director\, and producer seems easy for Farley because he does it all\, with a fabulous sense of humor.

DESCRIPTION:9/14/24\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 7:00pm Doors\, 8:00pm Show\nReserved floor and rail seating and Partial G.A Standing. $35-$25 \nErik Koskinen will open the show. \nIn two decades on the road Jeffrey Foucault has become one of the most distinctive voices in American music\, refining a sound instantly recognizable for its simplicity and emotional power. With a string of critically acclaimed studio albums – “Stark\, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest” (The New Yorker)\, “Beat-up troubadour folk whittled to dolorous perfection” (Uncut)\, “Songwriting Brilliance\,” (Irish Times) – he’s built a brick-and-mortar international touring career and a devoted following\, one that includes luminaries like Van Dyke Parks\, Greil Marcus\, and Don Henley. \nIn September of 2024 Jeffrey Foucault will release THE UNIVERSAL FIRE (Fluff & Gravy\, 9/6/24)\, his first album of entirely new material since 2018. A series of high-voltage performances cut live in one room\, the album is both a working wake – Foucault lost his best friend and drummer Billy Conway\, to cancer in 2021 – and a meditation on the nature of beauty\, artifact\, and loss. \nAugmenting Foucault’s all-star band with members of Calexico and Bon Iver (drummer John Convertino and producer/saxophonist Mike Lewis) THE UNIVERSAL FIRE sets Conway’s death against the massive 2008 fire at the Universal Studios lot in California that destroyed the master recordings of some of our bedrock American music\, to interrogate ideas about mortality\, legacy\, meaning\, and calling.

SUMMARY:Rockport Celtic Festival: FROM THE GROUND UP
DESCRIPTION:Maeve Gilchrist | Madelyn Monaghan | Jeremy Kittel | Hannah Read | Darol Anger | Bruce Molsky \nIn tonight’s wonderfully eclectic program\, we hear a selection of music that spans the breadth of Celtic and Celtic-adjacent music from its most traditional form to the most cutting edge! We start the evening with the stunning solo Sean Nós voice of Madelyn Monaghan before shifting gears to the rip-roaring virtuosity of fiddle virtuoso Jeremy Kittel and his incredible trio. We’re also thrilled to present US-based Scottish fiddler Hannah Read’s new project “The Fungi Sessions” in which she presents an ecologically-inspired suite of fiddle and banjo music with accompanying visuals to immerse us all in the world of the underground mycelium networks. Rounding the evening off are American music icons Darol Anger and Bruce Molsky bringing together their respective experience in Old Time\, jazz and bluegrass music. Prepare to be transported! \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.
