Reservations can be made on RESY. \nLoren Doucette lives in Gloucester and is a full-time painter. Her work can be viewed at her gallery seven days a week from June to January where she offers art mentoring and classes during the winter months. Using oil\, acrylic\, pastel and gouache\, her work includes architectural landscapes unique to Gloucester’s harbor\, vibrant floral paintings\, emotional figurative work and abstractions that come from the bones of all three subjects. \n“The main thing is my desire for abstraction and reality to meet. If I go too far in one of those directions\, I get really uncomfortable and try to go back to the middle. I often start off very realistic\, but then it doesn’t feel like me unless I make it reach toward the spiritual\, metaphysical\, and abstract. The reduction of traditional fish stocks and resulting strict state regulations on fishermen has led to social\, cultural and economic challenges never before experienced by the oldest fishing port in America. Beginning in 1606\, when Samuel de Champlain named Gloucester Harbor “Le Beauport”\, Gloucester\, through the voices of its citizens\, speaks to the enormity of our reliance on one of the world’s greatest fisheries\, revealing the towering achievements and innovations\, along with the slow but sure depletion of the fishery through advances in technology and the pressure of demand\, along with the effects of pollution and global warming. In this documentary\, covering the eight years leading up to 2023\, as well as the 400 years preceding it\, the citizens tell the story of a great American City’s unique struggle to remain true to Le Beauport.

SUMMARY:Gloucester's Fishermen's Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:The annual Fishermen’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday\, August 10th at 5:00 PM .  This Service is to remember and honor all of those who have lost their lives in the long history of Gloucester’s fishing industry.  The Service starts with a procession from the American Legion\, down Middle Street and onto Stacy Boulevard. Everyone is invited to join the procession.  It is led by a line of drummers and many of those walking carry flowers to toss into the sea at the end of the ceremony to remember loved ones or hold boat oars carrying the names of Gloucester fishing boats\, past and present. \nPlease join the Fishermen’s Memorial Service Committee in remembering those who lost their lives fishing from America’s oldest seaport.
