His interest in authentic performance has included collaborations with period-instrument ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. \nHe has recorded the Chopin Cello Sonata with Dénes Várjon for Hyperion using one of Chopin’s own pianos. Recent seasons have featured a performance with Sir Andras Schiff at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn\, using Beethoven’s own cello; and performances and recordings with Robert Levin (selected for the Deutsche SchallplattenPreis) of Beethoven’s complete music for cello and piano using original or replica fortepianos. With harpsichordist Richard Egarr\, he has performed and recorded the viola da gamba sonatas of J.S. Bach as well as sonatas by Handel and Scarlatti. \nMr. Isserlis is also a keen exponent of contemporary music and has premiered many new works including John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil\, Thomas Adès’s Lieux retrouvés\, and Stephen Hough’s Sonata for Cello and Piano\, Left Hand (Les Adieux). In 2016\, he gave the UK premiere of Olli Mustonen’s Frei\, aber einsam at the Wigmore Hall. \nHis recording of J.S. Bach’s complete Solo Cello Suites for Hyperion met with the highest critical acclaim and was Gramophone’s Instrumental Album of the Year and Critics’ Choice at the Classic BRITS. Other recent releases include a Grammy-nominated album of sonatas by Martinů\, the Brahms Double Concerto with Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields\, and concertos by Haydn and C.P.E. Bach\, with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. His recent recording Cello in Wartime is a WWI-inspired disc performed on a travel cello (now known as “the Trench Cello”) like the one played in the trenches by WWI soldier Harold Triggs. \nMr. Isserlis’s many honors include a CBE in recognition of his services to music\, and he is one of only two living cellists featured in Gramophone’s Hall of Fame. He gives most of his concerts on the Marquis de Corberon (Nelsova) Stradivarius of 1726\, kindly loaned to him by the Royal Academy of Music. \nCONNIE SHIH\, piano\nThe Canadian pianist Connie Shih is considered one of Canada’s most outstanding artists. In 1993 she was awarded the Sylva Gelber Award for most outstanding classical artist under age 30. At the age of nine\, she made her orchestral debut with Mendelssohn’s first Piano Concerto with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. \nAs soloist\, she has appeared with orchestras throughout Canada\, the U.S. and Europe. She has performed countless solo recitals worldwide as well as chamber music performances with many world-renowned musicians. To critical acclaim\, she appears regularly in recital with cellist Steven Isserlis and has performed at concert venues across Germany with the cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau\, with whom she recorded the first-ever CD of the Sonatas for Piano and Cello by Carl Reinecke and the complete Beethoven sonatas. \nMs. Shih’s performances are frequently broadcast via television and radio on CBC\, BBC\, SWR\, NDR and WDR\, as well as on other various television and radio stations in North America and Europe.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Nichols
DESCRIPTION:6/25/24\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. 7:00pm Doors / 8:00p Show \nOn his second album\, The Fatalist\, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There’s 808 programming\, chopped up Charley Patton samples\, washes of synth. There’s a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols’ vision for the blues is of a form of music that’s intimately tied to everyday life in 2023\, something that’s reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation\, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present\, and as such\, it’s a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today. The Fatalist sounds unlike any blues record you’re likely to hear in 2023.

SUMMARY:Lizzie No
DESCRIPTION:6/23/2024\nPartial Seating and G.A. Standing. 7:00p Doors / 8:00p Show\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required. $20-$25 \nAfter a dizzying five-year span that saw the release of two stunning\, eclectic albums (Hard Won and Vanity\, which drew praise from the likes of Billboard and Rolling Stone) — followed by appearances at AmericanaFest\, the Newport Folk Festival\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, and SXSW\, and tours with Iron and Wine\, Son Little\, and Adia Victoria — Lizzie No found herself at the forefront of a new vanguard of genre-defying artists. Her new album\, Halfsies (Thirty Tigers / Miss Freedomland)\, finds No situated among her peers while still searching for freedom — freedom from the constraints of categorization\, sure\, but more importantly\, freedom from the depths of her own personal despair and from an increasingly violent and nightmarish American cultural and political landscape.

SUMMARY:The Mavericks – Moon & Stars Summer Tour ‘24
DESCRIPTION:Any band that manages to survive three decades\, seeing its core members go from young adults to veteran musicians is bound to have its swings and cycles. \nThe Mavericks\, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon\, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally\, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary.

DESCRIPTION:Manship Artists Residency is pleased to announce The Quarry Project: Photographs by Tsar Fedorsky\, which opens at the Manship Artists Residency on Friday\, June 7 and runs through July 7. The Quarry Project is a continuation of Manship Artist Tsar Fedorsky’s twenty-year practice investigating the properties of black-and-white photography and how it creates abstraction from realism. They comprise a deep exploration of the familiarity of place\, the quarries near Fedorsky’s home in Gloucester.\nVisitors can register to attend on the home page of the Manship Artists Residency website at ManshipArtists.org.

SUMMARY:Ride the Rainbow: Unicorn Trolley Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Our event begins with a story time reading of “There’s No Such Thing As…Unicorns” by Lucy Rowland inside The Good Witch of Salem’s shop. This wonderful tale gets us ready for our magical journey. \nChildren will help The Good Witch of Salem brew a special potion to find the hidden unicorn. Once the potion is ready\, we’ll hop on the Salem Trolley and go on an exciting ride through the town\, following clues and looking for signs of the unicorn. Along the way\, we’ll capture rainbow wishes and let our imaginations soar. \nJoin us on this whimsical journey\, where believing in unicorns and in yourself can lead to the most magical discoveries. Together\, we’ll show that dreams can come true if we just believe!
