SUMMARY:History of Old Newbury in 3 Drinks: Part II: RUM 1700-1800
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Caldwell’s Newburyport Rum was produced along the waterfront for 171 years (with a short break during Prohibition)? The rum business boomed in Newbury(port) in the 18th century\, with ships arriving from the West Indies with cargoes of molasses to be distilled into potent\, inexpensive New England rum. \nAnd we drank almost as much as we made – about three pints of rum per adult male per week in the 1770’s\, and British attempts to regulate and tax this beverage helped to stoke the flames of revolution! \nJoin executive director Bethany Dorau for an illustrated talk and tasting on the history of rum in 18th century Newbury(port). Learn the language of punch bowls and check out the bar tab from Newburyport’s Wolfe Tavern on the eve of Revolution. Learn how the production and distribution of rum changed over time\, and how westward expansion signalled the end of the rule of rum. Explore attempts to outlaw “demon rum\,” long before Prohibition\, and head home with recipes for rum cocktails from some of the area’s best bartenders!

SUMMARY:Eileen Ivers
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day week with fiddler Eileen Ivers! Eileen’s Irish and American roots shine throughout the evening’s beautiful mix of traditional Celtic songs and poems along with foot stomping roots music.\nWhat’s the difference between a fiddle and a violin? In the hands of a celebrated guest soloist with over 50 symphony orchestras\, who also shreds electric fiddle through fuzz\, wah and looping effects…who is called “the future of the Celtic Fiddle” by The Washington Post\, and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin” by The New York Times…who is Bronx born\, yet the 9-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion. What’s the difference? Nothing\, in the hands of Eileen Ivers.\nGrammy®-Awarded and Emmy-nominated\, Eileen Ivers continues to push the fiddling tradition boundaries from a folk music staple to a fiercely fresh\, powerfully beautiful\, intensely driving world stage experience. Eileen has performed with Sting\, ‘Fiddlers 3’ with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Regina Carter\, Patti Smith\, Al Di Meola\, The Chieftains\, was the groundbreaking Musical Star of Riverdance\, a founding member of Cherish the Ladies\, a former member of the Hall & Oates band\, a featured instrumentalist on soundtracks including “Gangs of New York” and Back to Titanic”\, and she is one of the most awarded All-Ireland Fiddle and Banjo champions ever. Eileen has been proclaimed “a national treasure” by NCTA Board Chairman George Holt as she celebrates her 30+ year career as a performer\, composer\, producer\, songwriter\, band leader\, educator\, multi-instrumentalist and renowned pioneer in connecting her American\, Irish traditional\, jazz\, blues\, and world roots.\nEileen’s most recent CD\, “Beyond the Bog Road”\, and its extensively researched 16-page liner notes focus on the influences of the Celtic tradition on Roots music (bluegrass\, French-Canadian\, Cajun\, Appalachian\, Americana) and how the music journeyed on to become a fundamental ingredient of the American Country music tradition. Irish Music Magazine called it “a triumph …a musical Magnum Opus\,” and the album reached number one on the Alt-Country Roots Music Chart.\nEileen’s new\, energetic\, joyous and passionate band\, Universal Roots\, connect music\, cultures\, stories and emotions that tie us together…celebrating the fact that we are more alike than dissimilar. Music truly is the universal language. The ensemble\, with a broad array of instrumentation\, features Matt Mancuso (lead vocals\, guitar\, trumpet\, fiddle)\, Buddy Connolly (button accordion\, whistles\, piano\, vocals)\, Lindsey Horner (upright and electric bass\, baritone sax\, vocals)\, Dave Barckow (lead vocals\, percussion\, guitar)\, together with Eileen on fiddle\, mandolin\, banjo and live looping.

SUMMARY:Hot Club of Cowtown
DESCRIPTION:“The interplay is as sleek as ever.” – The Times (London) \n“The hot jazz is what Hot Club do best\, and this is a staggering return to form for the band I once said I could listen to forever. That still stands.” – Country Music People \n“This trio’s stylistic genesis–as well as title–stems from the realization that the great heritage of strings (guitars and violins) originates mutually with the Manouche gypsies of France and the no-less virtuosic hillbilly pickers and fiddlers of Oklahoma and Texas….Together for over 15 years and a dozen albums\, the threesome of high-heeled violinist Elana James\, guitarist Whit Smith and bassist Jake Erwin showed from the beginning that jazz and country music could exist together on the same page\, a highly commendable achievement if ever there was one.” – Wall Street Journal \n“Hot Club of Cowtown swung light and tight\, like tumbleweeds made of velvet.” – Rochester City Paper \n“[James’s] inventive violin style can still conjure up the unique image of Bob Wills strolling through Tin Pan Alley.” – JazzTimes \n“As instrumentally and vocally tight as any band out there working in any genre today….three skilled musicians who can seemingly just tune up and play\, something that’s becoming increasingly rare these days.” – American Songwriter \nAward-winning Austin\, Texas-based Hot Club of Cowtown may be the world’s most globe-trotting\, effervescent string trio\, who’s joyful sound blends the traditional Western swing of the 1940s American southwest with European hot jazz influences of the same era. The Hot Club of Cowtown\, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary\, writes its own original songs and reinterprets everything from hoedowns to American songbook standards in its own\, original style. The band is guitarist Whit Smith\, fiddler Elana James\, and upright bassist Zack Sapunor. \nHCCT has toured with Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Roxy Music and others and proudly represents traditional American music throughout the world for the US State Department from Azerbaijan to the Sultanate of Oman. It has been named Ameripolitan Western Swing Group of the Year and is a member of the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. Fifteen albums\, a global following\, and the relentless passion of its live shows are the band’s enduring trademark. \nRecently signed to UK roots label the Last Music Company\, the Hot Club of Cowtown continues to amass a devoted following worldwide through its one-of-a-kind versatility and virtuosity. Career highlights include the Fuji Rock Festival (Japan)\, Lincoln Center\, the Grand Ol’ Opry\, the Glastonbury Festival (UK) and all points in between.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Privateers of the Caribbean: Bermuda and the Bahamas After the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Ross Nedervelt\, the 2023 Frances E. Malamy Fellow at PEM’s Phillips Library\, present the findings of his research project: “Loyalism\, Privateering\, and American Sovereignty in the Atlantic Border-sea\, 1783-1815.” \nBetween 1783 and 1819\, the newly independent United States fought a series of skirmishes with Britain over control of the islands of Bermuda and the Bahamas. American loyalists and British military occupying the islands created a military and cultural bulwark to defend against the nascent United States\, thwarting the new country’s endeavors to expand its commercial influence into the colonies of the British Caribbean. In the decades following the American Revolution\, the British government remade Bermuda from a commercial hub into the Royal Navy’s staging ground for the assault on Washington\, D.C. during the War of 1812. \nThe Phillips Library Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship program\, funded by the Malamy family\, awards $5\,500 to one recipient each year to perform independent research for three months at the library located in Rowley\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Shemekia Copeland with opener Peter Parcek Trio
DESCRIPTION:3/16/2024\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 8:00p doors / 8:30p show \n“Shemekia Copeland is the greatest blues singer of her generation.” –The Washington Post \n“Shemekia Copeland has established herself as one of the leading blues artists of our time.” –NPR Music \nAward-winning blues\, soul and Americana singer Shemekia Copeland possesses one of the most instantly recognizable and deeply soulful roots music voices of our time. She is beloved worldwide for the fearlessness\, honesty and humor of her revelatory music\, as well as for delivering each song she performs with unmatched passion. Copeland — winner of the 2021 Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year— connects with her audience on an intensely personal level\, taking them with her on what The Wall Street Journal calls “a consequential ride” of “bold and timely blues.” NPR Music says Shemekia sings with “punchy defiance and potent conviction.” The Houston Chronicle describes her songs as “resilient pleas for a kinder tomorrow.” \nPeter Parcek’s daring\, incendiary and soulful style is a distinctive hybrid. He weaves rock\, gypsy-jazz\, country\, folk\, and blues– especially blues– into a tapestry of melody\, harmony and daredevil solos that push those styles to their limits without sacrificing the warmth of his own personality. \nPeter calls his approach “soul guitar\,” an appellation that alludes to his playing’s depth of feeling and character\, as well as its deepest roots in classic American music. But Peter’s sensibilities are equally attuned to the future.

SUMMARY:Charlie Parr with The Wildmans
DESCRIPTION:3/13/2024\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 7:30p Doors / 8:30p Show \nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \nThe Wildmans come from the hills of Floyd\, Virginia\, in the heart of the Appalachian mountain music tradition. From campsite jamming at festivals and fiddler’s conventions and a college level music education comes the foundation for musical exploration that sets this group apart\, taking the audience on a musical journey that reflects the growth and passion of these talented musicians.\nHaving shared the stage with talents such as Bela Fleck\, The Steep Canyon Rangers\, The Steel Wheels\, Danny Knicely\, Sammy Shelor\, Sierra Hull\, Billy Strings\, and more.\, these young musicians are making their way in the American stringband scene.
