SUMMARY:Charlie Parr with The Wildmans
DESCRIPTION:3/13/2024\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 7:30p Doors / 8:30p Show \nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \nThe Wildmans come from the hills of Floyd\, Virginia\, in the heart of the Appalachian mountain music tradition. From campsite jamming at festivals and fiddler’s conventions and a college level music education comes the foundation for musical exploration that sets this group apart\, taking the audience on a musical journey that reflects the growth and passion of these talented musicians.\nHaving shared the stage with talents such as Bela Fleck\, The Steep Canyon Rangers\, The Steel Wheels\, Danny Knicely\, Sammy Shelor\, Sierra Hull\, Billy Strings\, and more.\, these young musicians are making their way in the American stringband scene.

SUMMARY:Saturday Brunch with StratCat Willie Hayes
DESCRIPTION:StratCat Willie Hayes is an old-school bluesman who has been writing and playing for over fifty years. Some of his earliest influences includedT-Bone Walker\, MikeBloomfield \,B.B. King\, Johnny Winter\, and Duke Robillard. In 1995\, after several years of gigging in local clubs and fronting many cover bands\, his affinity for and love of the blues led to him to form a band that would allow him to focus exclusively on the blues.“Blues Plate Special” was a harmonica driven blues band that allowed him to focus on songwriting\, while covering groups ranging from Little Charlie & the Nightcats to the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. With Blues Plate Special\, he worked hard to keep the blues alive in theSouthernTier of New York\, recording three studio albums along with one live album. In 2019\, in an effort to explore other styles of the blues\, he pulled several players together that had been with him for many of those fifty-plus years to form “StratCatWillie & the Strays”.In 2020\, armed with thirteen original tunes\, he took the Strays into the studio. The result was“On The Prowl”\,which debuted on SiriusXM BLUESVILLE’s “Rack ofBlues” and remained on the Roots Music Report charts for six consecutive months\, finishing #52on theRMR“Top 200 Contemporary Blues Album Chart for 2021”.Following up on that success\, late in 2021 StratCat Willie brought the same players together to record“On A Hot Tin Roof”.Comprised of twelve new original tunes written entirely during the pandemic\, the music not only reflects the darkness of the times\, it also reflects the “Good News of the Blues” and the joy of classic swing/jump blues by tapping into the rich sound of a backing horn section and soulful background vocals.Over his fifty plus year career\, StratCat Willie has shared the stage with many musicians across theUnited States\, fromNew Orleans\, where he has jammed with legends like Walter “Wolfman” Washington\, to San Francisco\, Memphis\, and Nashville\, always looking to meet and play with different folks. StratCat Willie not only enjoys the spontaneity of a good blues jam\, he revels in the opportunity to bring new players together and “make a statement”.Continuing the influences of the old masters\, his swinging\, upbeat style has been described as “always a party”and“uniquely his”\, while always paying tribute to and recognizing the African-American men and women who gave us this amazing art form.

From reggae riddims with former band Pier Ave to the summertime hip hop melody of his latest single ‘Find My Island’\, CFG brings a vibe and energy that is a perfect fit amongst your favorite good vibes artists. \nHAYLEY REARDON\nHayley Reardon is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Reardon dove head first into music at the young age of 15\, and has spent much of the past decade writing\, recording and performing music around the world.\nRaised in a coastal Massachusetts town north of Boston\, Reardon spent three years based in Nashville and the past six years carrying her songs and stories all over the globe — including a six-month artist-in-residency stay in Dachau\, Germany — gathering experiences\, inspiration and soulful connections. Her ever-deepening music carries a lyrical and melodic weight beyond her years\, being described as “brilliantly moving folk/pop with a lyrical depth and soul” (Performer Magazine) and “a melancholy little masterpiece” (American Songwriter Magazine). No Depression writes “Reardon is truly a treasure.”\nHer latest release Changes (July 20\, 2023) is the continuation of a journey that began with Reardon’s 2022 release In the Good Light. Both projects were recorded in Barcelona with Catalan collaborators Pau Figueres (producer and one of Spain’s premiere instrumentalists) and Aniol Bestit Collellimir (recording engineer). The title track on Changes features an original\, bilingual duet with Catalan sensation Judit Neddermann\, with whom Reardon formed a deep musical bond during her time in Barcelona and who appears on the EP courtesy of Universal Music Spain.\nReardon’s songs have found a home on Spotify Editorial Playlists like Fresh Folk\, Folk Pop\, Morning Coffee and Today’s Singer/Songwriters\, as well as Apple Music’s Acoustic Chill and New in Singer/Songwriter. She totes over 6 million streams on Apple Music alone and has shared the stage with renowned artists including Lori McKenna\, Rodney Crowell and Anaïs Mitchell\, among others. \nJUDIT NEDDERMANN\nBarcelona\, 1991. A singer and a composer\, she has released five solo albums and a joint album with her sister Meritxell Neddermann. She has collaborated\, recording or sharing the stage\, with artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat\, Alejandro Sanz\, Pedro Guerra\, MARO\, Noa\, Jorge Drexler\, Andrés Suárez\, Rozalén\, Miguel Poveda\, Macaco\, and among others. She is a recognized singer in Catalonia\, two years ago she started singing in new countries such as Mexico\, Argentina\, Uruguay and Italy.\nShe is the composer of the original score for the play ‘When I sing\, mountains dance’\, a play based on the novel of the same name by Irene Solà. For ten years she was the singer of The Gramophone Allstars project\, led by Genís Bou\, with whom she recorded five albums. She has also had a long and close collaboration with the pianist Clara Peya\, the joint project with the Quartet Brossa “Viatge d’hivern” and his participation in Coetus.\nShe has been awarded a Max Award\, a Butaca Award\, two Enderrock Awards\, the Miquel Martí i Pol Award and a Descobertes Award.\nShe was born in 1991 into a family of musicians that has always supported her\, and she grew up in Vilassar de Mar.

SUMMARY:Our Fire Is Stronger Than Your Bombs – War posters by contemporary Ukrainian Illustrators
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition was first installed at Dartmouth College from February 24 – March 31\, 2023 at the one- year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an effort to raise awareness about the war raging in the heart of Europe. The exhibition showcases some of the brilliant artworks of contemporary Ukrainian illustrators living and working in Ukraine\, sometimes\, with no power\, water\, cell signal\, or Internet connection. Many of them have long been collaborating with global media\, in particular\, New Yorker\, the Atlantic\, Zeit\, Adweek\, and other outlets. \nA poster\, as a form of fine art blending imagery and text\, is a convenient and laconic statement\, a means of rapid\, shareable response to the urgent events and personal emotions they trigger. In the context of the massive information war\, illustrators have become the voices of the art community\, and their activism adds tangible strength to the ‘cultural troops’ who fight propaganda every day\, broadcasting facts through artistic images and defending the truth as eyewitnesses. \nCo-curators Veronika Yadukha and Hanna Leliv will present a talk on Wednesday\, February 21 from 12:30-1:30 pm in the Winfisky Gallery. This will be followed by a reception from 1:30-3 pm. Gallery talks will take place on from 12- 1 pm on Wednesdays\, February 14\, 28 and March 5. \nThe Winfisky Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Salem State’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS).
