SUMMARY:Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley: Presented by The Actors Studio & DoGo Productions.
DESCRIPTION:Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland\, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door\, determined to have him\, watching the years slip away. With Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families\, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then\, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion\, these yearning\, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking\, funny as hell\, and ultimately deeply moving. \nOUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a compassionate\, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love.

SUMMARY:Ice Ship to Calcutta: Captain Pritchard and the Ultimate Ephemera
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Lowell’s Boat Shop Winter Speaker Series\, join us for the tragic tale of Captain Pritchard aboard the Elcano. \nJoin us at the Museum of Old Newbury for an unforgettable evening on Tuesday\, Feb 27\, 2024 at 7:00 PM. \nOn June 15\, 2023\, the Museum of Old Newbury purchased a slate tablet from an auction in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, a notebook-paper sized piece of thin stone\, double-sided and framed in walnut. Notes kept on slate were ephemeral. Slates were used to keep the “rough log”\, and they were erased after the notes were copied down into the ship’s official log. \nThis slate deck log became\, accidentally\, a permanent record of the last moments of a man’s life\, and revealed a gripping story of love\, loss\, murder\, and bicycling in the Himalayas. Intrigued? Come hear the whole wild story and see this piece of ultimate ephemera for yourself. \nThe story of the Elcano has been revealed through a series of partnerships. Lowell’s Boat Shop executive director Graham McKay and MOON director Bethany Groff Dorau worked together to decipher the deck log\, while the Custom House Maritime Museum lent a copy of a journal that revealed another Pritchard – the Captain’s wife Emily – as she made her way to Calcutta and home again. \nJoin us for a Dark and Stormy evening with maritime-themed refreshments.

SUMMARY:VOX ONE
DESCRIPTION:Vox One is an award-winning a cappella jazz quintet that combines elements of blues\, funk\, gospel\, and folk into their own brand of vocal music\, which is “most adventurous and distinction.” – San Francisco Examiner. The group\, formed in 1988\, has since developed a unique style considered to be the cutting edge of a cappella. “This jazz quintet puts all kinds of throat sounds to such funky good use that listeners break into applause and – better – feel like dancing.” – Boston Magazine. \nVox One has performed internationally\, and has opened for Ray Charles\, Chicago\, the Persuasions\, the Bobs\, the Woody Herman Orchestra\, the Count Basie Orchestra\, and most recently appeared on Ahmad Jamal’s latest recording After Fajr. The group earns wide acclaim for their performances and CDs. Their awards include “Best A cappella Group\, Jazz” – Boston Magazine. Vox One’s eponymous debut CD was named “Best Album” and awarded “Best Song” by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA): “Creative arrangements and soulful spark… fabulous lead vocalists\, and exquisite blend\, a great vocal percussion sound\, and lots of class.” Their second US release “Out There\,” won “Album of the Year\,” “Best Jazz Song\,” and “Best R&B song” by CASA. “…as defining an album for vocal jazz as Singers Unlimited “A Capella” and Take 6’s debut album…it’s that good.” -Primarily A Cappella. With their 1998 album “Chameleon\,” Vox One was named “Artist of the Year\,” and once again it earned “Best Jazz Album” and “Best Jazz Song.” The 2006 release\, Pure Imagination received “Best Folk/World Song” for Kind of a 3. \nJodi Jenkins-Ainsworth (soprano)\, Yumiko Matsuoka (alto)\, Paul Stiller (tenor/vocal drums)\, Paul Pampinella (baritone) and Tom Baskett (bass)\, met at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where all of them are now on the faculty. Vox One composes and arranges in many styles and settings. A first-time listener of Vox One may be amazed to hear a variety of instruments such as drums\, bass\, horns\, and guitar. “I am beside myself how Vox One produces the sound they do with the human voice.” – Northeast Performer. Other arrangements use tight\, lush voicings and interesting reharmonizations which give familiar songs a new twist. “Vox One manages to transform a white-bread classic like “Edelweiss” into something more surprising\, and yes\, even funky…a tricky\, intelligent arrangement.” – James Marcus\, JazzTimes Magazine. \nFor access and accommodation information\, visit https://www.salemstate.edu/access or email access@salemstate.edu.

SUMMARY:ROE by Lisa Loomer
DESCRIPTION:ROE\, by acclaimed playwright Lisa Loomer\, is a theatrical survey of the complicated and divisive underpinnings of Roe v. Wade\, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established a woman’s right to an abortion. The playwright has updated the script since the Court’s June 2022 ruling in Dobbs. V. Jackson Women’s Health\, overturning that constitutional right. \nLoomer’s incisive play cuts through the headlines and rhetoric as she offers a clever\, shocking\, humorous\, and poignant portrayal of the two women at the center of this issue and explores what it is like to be an average citizen caught in the currents of history. Taking place from the 1970s to the present with characters on both sides of the issue from decidedly pro-choice to decidedly pro-life\, ROE reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and commitment each person has for their cause. \nROE was commissioned in 2012 by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) as part of their series “American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle”\, a multi-decade program of commissioning and developing new plays about moments of change in U.S. history. It was developed at the University of Texas and The Kennedy Center as part of DC’s Women’s Voices Festival as well as OSF’s Black Swan Lab before premiering at OSF in 2016. \nWritten by Lisa Loomer\nDirected by Sara Conlon \nPERFORMANCES\nFebruary 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm\nFebruary 25 at 2 pm – followed by a post-show conversation \nMarch 1 and 2 at 7:30 pm\nMarch 3 at 2 pm \nFriday\, March 1 is SALEM NIGHT. Free admission for all Salem residents. \nTICKETS\n$15 general/$10 seniors/free for all students with student ID and under 18.\nAdmission is free for Salem State students\, faculty and staff with university ID. \nSuitability warning: This production is for mature audiences. Roe contains strong profanity and graphic language. It also contains stories of sexual assault\, abortions\, self-abortions\, parental abuse\, drug use and alcoholism\, mentions of suicide and systemic oppression. \nCo-sponsored by the Sociology Department\, Center for Civic Engagement and the Intersectional Feminist Collective. \nFor access and accommodation information\, visit https://www.salemstate.edu/access or email access@salemstate.edu.

SUMMARY:Sunny War and Chris Pierce
DESCRIPTION:2/22/24\n21+\, Positive ID Required. 8:00p doors/8:30p show \n“The Best Albums of 2023 (So Far)” – Rolling Stone \n“I haven’t heard a young guitarist this dexterous and ass-kicking in eons.” – L.A Weekly \nIt’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces\, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles-based street singer\, guitarist\, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider\, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting. Her restless spirit\, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother\, led her to Venice Beach\, California\, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now\, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting\, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost. \n“I haven’t been so deeply\, deeply moved by just a person and their guitar like this in a long time” – NPR Music \n“The sound of everyone who’s hungry for change\, steadying themselves and marching toward a common goal”. – Rolling Stone \nIn 2023\, Chris Pierce was handpicked to be the special guest opener for the NEIL YOUNG Coastal Tour. He gained additional worldwide prominence with “We Can Always Come Back to This”. His hit song aired on 3 episodes of the #1 NBC primetime series ‘THIS IS US\,’ then went on to #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
