SUMMARY:ROE by Lisa Loomer
DESCRIPTION:ROE\, by acclaimed playwright Lisa Loomer\, is a theatrical survey of the complicated and divisive underpinnings of Roe v. Wade\, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established a woman’s right to an abortion. The playwright has updated the script since the Court’s June 2022 ruling in Dobbs. V. Jackson Women’s Health\, overturning that constitutional right. \nLoomer’s incisive play cuts through the headlines and rhetoric as she offers a clever\, shocking\, humorous\, and poignant portrayal of the two women at the center of this issue and explores what it is like to be an average citizen caught in the currents of history. Taking place from the 1970s to the present with characters on both sides of the issue from decidedly pro-choice to decidedly pro-life\, ROE reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and commitment each person has for their cause. \nROE was commissioned in 2012 by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) as part of their series “American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle”\, a multi-decade program of commissioning and developing new plays about moments of change in U.S. history. It was developed at the University of Texas and The Kennedy Center as part of DC’s Women’s Voices Festival as well as OSF’s Black Swan Lab before premiering at OSF in 2016. \nWritten by Lisa Loomer\nDirected by Sara Conlon \nPERFORMANCES\nFebruary 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm\nFebruary 25 at 2 pm – followed by a post-show conversation \nMarch 1 and 2 at 7:30 pm\nMarch 3 at 2 pm \nFriday\, March 1 is SALEM NIGHT. Free admission for all Salem residents. \nTICKETS\n$15 general/$10 seniors/free for all students with student ID and under 18.\nAdmission is free for Salem State students\, faculty and staff with university ID. \nSuitability warning: This production is for mature audiences. Roe contains strong profanity and graphic language. It also contains stories of sexual assault\, abortions\, self-abortions\, parental abuse\, drug use and alcoholism\, mentions of suicide and systemic oppression. \nCo-sponsored by the Sociology Department\, Center for Civic Engagement and the Intersectional Feminist Collective. \nFor access and accommodation information\, visit https://www.salemstate.edu/access or email access@salemstate.edu.

SUMMARY:Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley (at The Actors Studio in Salisbury)
DESCRIPTION:Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland\, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door\, determined to have him\, watching the years slip away. \nWith Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families\, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then\, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion\, these yearning\, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking\, funny as hell\, and ultimately deeply moving. \nOUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a compassionate\, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love. \nVenue: The Actors Studio of Newburyport – Crossroads Plaza\n1 Merrill Street\, Unit # 3\nSalisbury\, MA 01952

SUMMARY:Sunny War and Chris Pierce
DESCRIPTION:2/22/24\n21+\, Positive ID Required. 8:00p doors/8:30p show \n“The Best Albums of 2023 (So Far)” – Rolling Stone \n“I haven’t heard a young guitarist this dexterous and ass-kicking in eons.” – L.A Weekly \nIt’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces\, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles-based street singer\, guitarist\, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider\, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting. Her restless spirit\, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother\, led her to Venice Beach\, California\, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now\, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting\, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost. \n“I haven’t been so deeply\, deeply moved by just a person and their guitar like this in a long time” – NPR Music \n“The sound of everyone who’s hungry for change\, steadying themselves and marching toward a common goal”. – Rolling Stone \nIn 2023\, Chris Pierce was handpicked to be the special guest opener for the NEIL YOUNG Coastal Tour. He gained additional worldwide prominence with “We Can Always Come Back to This”. His hit song aired on 3 episodes of the #1 NBC primetime series ‘THIS IS US\,’ then went on to #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.

SUMMARY:The GemsTones
DESCRIPTION:The GemsTones are a youthful 5-piece retro-rock band of brothers specializing in a mix of nostalgic originals and hits from America’s decade; rock n roll of the 1950s! They bring new energy to unforgettable songs by legendary artists like Chuck Berry\, Elvis Presley\, Buddy Holly\, Johnny Cash & many more! \nThey call themselves The GemsTones because each member is a gem; Rockin’ Ruby plays electric guitar\, Swingin’ Sapphire plays acoustic guitar\, Angsty Amethyst grooves on bass\, Dynamic Diamond is a brilliant pianist and Electric Emerald beats those drums. \nAll of The GemsTones are singers! Their performances are unique because they share the spotlight; each one getting a chance to sing lead on a variety of songs. The GemsTones are especially known for their stunning vocal harmonies.

SUMMARY:Cowboy Junkies
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes revolutions begin quietly. \nCowboy Junkies will be performing a career-spanning show from The Trinity Session to the recent critically acclaimed album\, Such Ferocious Beauty! \nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late ’80s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies.

DESCRIPTION:Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland\, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. SUMMARY:CAMTalk: History Series — Geology is Destiny – With Ed Becker
DESCRIPTION:The landscape of Cape Ann has been shaped by ancient geologic forces\, from the collision of tectonic plates to the movement of glacial ice. Using examples from the Museum’s current works on view\, including Edward Hopper’s 1928 painting  Cape Ann Granite\, we’ll explore how this geologic history led to Cape Ann’s important quarry industry and to landforms that have inspired artists for over two centuries. \nEd Becker is the former president of Essex County Greenbelt\, a nonprofit land trust that has conserved nearly 20\,000 acres of land north of Boston.  He has been a docent at the Cape Ann Museum since 2019.
