SUMMARY:Shark Anatomy & Biology with AWSC
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on program is geared towards children and families\, and is led by our special guests from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Participants will assemble a life-size puzzle of a juvenile white shark and a life-size puzzle of an adult white shark. Learners will then discuss how sharks grow and change from juvenile to adult and what is required for them to grow. With examples of shark teeth to discuss how feeding and diet change\, this program will demonstrate how sharks need food to grow and swim! Participants will then take their investigation a step further by exploring the similarities and differences between white sharks and whales\, boney fish\, seals\, and more. Through interactive exploration\, learners will develop an understanding of how marine animals utilize and travel ocean waters in various ways. \nOur guests from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy are also offering a lecture later the same day at The Crane Estate: Awareness Inspires Conservation\, 4/22 from 6-7:30pm: https://thetrustees.org/event/425258/ \nShark enthusiasts might want to join us for both events and enjoy a walk or picnic on the Estate grounds in between the programs. \nThis is a family-friendly program welcoming learners of all ages which includes hands-on activities to engage curiosity. This program is best suited for ages 5+.

SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
DESCRIPTION:As our coastlines change\, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024\, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators\, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines. \nOne of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)\, a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems. \nJoin us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts\, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research. \nAt the end of the program\, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation. \nAbout our speaker: \nKristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role\, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives\, including educational programs\, community outreach efforts\, the college internship program\, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show\, Channel 7 News Boston\, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. \nThe Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety surrounding white sharks. SUMMARY:Facing Colonel Alexander Leslie
DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23rd\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nSocial and cultural historian Judy Anderson of Marblehead will introduce Colonel Alexander Leslie as a person\, along with a few of the other individuals who were involved — most of whom were remarkably young ! … She will also note who were NOT involved\, contrary to common assumptions and portrayals of the tense confrontation on that cold February day. … Along the way\, she will illuminate what Marblehead actually was in 1775\, as opposed to what people think it was — especially in relation to Danvers and Salem. Because in 1775\, all three were VERY different communities. \nPortrait of Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie as a General (in 1776) by Thomas Gainsborough. Private collection in Scotland. \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J. Frost (1920s)\, depicting the landing of Colonel Leslie’s troops at a cove in Marblehead Harbor. Marblehead Museum collection. \nWe are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program. \nSpeaker Series typically every 3rd Wednesday\, 7pm.\nIncluding a temporary exhibit of related artifacts from the Society’s collections.\nTapley Memorial Hall 13 Page Street\, Danvers MA.\nDanvers Historical Society: 978-777-1666 or E-mail to dhs@danvershistory.org   Donations appreciated. \nLearn more here: https://www.danvershistory.org/2025/04/facing-colonel-alexander-leslie/

In addition to his solo work\, Dweezil has collaborated with an impressively varied roster of artists\, including Edward Van Halen\, Deep Purple\, Lisa Loeb\, Chick Corea\, Herbie Hancock and Steve Vai\, among others. \nIn 2020\, Dweezil further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in the industry by completing construction on “Hikari\,” a state-of-the-art multimedia studio. As a sought-after audio mix engineer\, he showcased his expertise by crafting the stereo and Atmos mixes for the 50th anniversary re-release of Deep Purple’s legendary album “Machine Head” in 2024\, cementing his status as a unique voice in sound engineering. \nBeyond his artistic pursuits\, Dweezil is deeply passionate about music education. He frequently shares his knowledge and expertise by teaching guitar\, both through his own music camp\, “Dweezilla\,” and online lessons. His collaborative spirit has led him to work with a diverse array of musicians all while honoring the legacy of his father\, Frank Zappa. \nIn all his endeavors\, Dweezil remains committed to upholding integrity and pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity. As he continues to innovate and inspire\, Dweezil Zappa stands as a true luminary in the world of music and beyond.

SUMMARY:Paul Reiser
DESCRIPTION:Comedian\, actor\, television writer\, author and musician Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives. \n2024 is set to be a busy year for Reiser. On the heels of his new comedy “The Problem with People\,” which he wrote\, produced\, and starred in alongside Colm Meaney and Jane Levy\, Reiser has upcoming projects across a multitude of media formats. \nIn March\, Carter Burke\, Reiser’s iconic character from “Aliens” will be re-emerging in a “what-if” concept comic book from Marvel comics. \nReiser co-wrote “What a Fool Believes\,” the candid\, freewheeling memoir of his friend and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Michael McDonald which will be published May 21 from HarperCollins/DeyStreet. \nLater\, in July\, Reiser will appear in Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F\, reprising his role from BH Cop 1 and 2 and will also appear in the independent comedy “The Gutter\,” directed by Isaiah and Yassir Lester\, premiering at SXSW. \nRecently Reiser could be seen in Hulu’s critically-acclaimed comedy series “Reboot” from Modern Family creator Steve Levitan. Awards Daily wrote “Reiser truly excels\, giving one of his very best performances…here\, he reminds us just how very funny and experienced he is in the world of television comedy.” \nHe also took his first step into bloody\, superhero glory in Season 3 of Amazon Prime’s Emmy-nominated The Boys playing “The Legend.” \nReiser is widely celebrated for his roles in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things—the company’s biggest series of all time— and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method\, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. \nMad About You\, the long-running Emmy\, Peabody\, and Golden Globe-winning comedy that Reiser created and starred in with Helen Hunt returned as a limited series on Spectrum Originals. \nThroughout his prolific career\, Reiser has worked with both independent and mainstream filmmakers. Having earned acclaim for his supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film Whiplash\, Reiser was also seen in frequent collaborator Jeff Baena’s “The Little Hours” and “Horse Girl\,” which premiered at Sundance 2020\, the fourth film the pair has worked on together. The veteran actor has garnered praise for notable performances in films such as Diner\, Bye Bye Love\, One Night At McCool’s\, and The Thing About My Folks\, which Reiser wrote for his co-star Peter Falk. \nReiser is a fixture behind the camera as well. He co-created and produced the seven-episode series There’s Johnny\, a fictional story set behind-the-scenes of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show circa 1972\, co-produced with director David Gordon Green. The show premiered to critical praise\, with Decider saying There’s Johnny! is “a television experience unlike any I’ve seen on TV in recent years” and “unfolds like a dream\, a memory fondly recalled.” \nAs an author\, Reiser’s first book\, Couplehood\, sold over two million copies and reached the number one spot on The New York Times bestsellers list. His subsequent books\, Babyhood and Familyhood\, were best sellers as well. \nVoted by Comedy Central as one of the Top 100 Comedians of All Time\, Reiser regularly performs sold-out standups at venues nationwide. \nA SUNY Binghamton graduate of its prestigious music program\, Reiser co-wrote the theme song for Mad About You\, “The Final Frontier\,” with Grammy-winning producer Don Was\, and released an album of original songs with British singer-songwriter Julia Fordham called Unusual Suspects. Over the course of his career\, Reiser has received multiple Emmys\, Golden Globes\, American Comedy Awards\, and Screen Actors Guild nominations. \nReiser and his family reside in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:5-Day Bare Bones Wood Carving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Here is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of woodcarving in 5 days from a professional! \nFor those of you who cannot find time for the five consecutive days\, this is what I do. If you take a two or three-day course you are taking the first two or three days of my five-day workshop which is broken up into daily learning chapters. So three days brings you to chapter three\, two days to chapter two. The weekend workshops will give you a basic understanding of the skill of wood carving which includes hand-carving technique\, sharpening\, and designing skills among other topics but the full training takes five days. You will also do the carving projects to reinforce the hand techniques that we talk about so that you gain much needed muscle memory in your hands. \nSome students may be satisfied with the information learned\, others may choose to find their way back for another weekend and finish the last two or three days to get all the necessary techniques and insights. When you return\, (it can be during that calendar year or the next) everyone else is at the beginning point on the start of the weekend\, but you pick up where you left off to finish your training. That’s the story in a nutshell. Call me if you are looking for more info. I am happy to answer any questions. \nAll class days run from 9 am – 5 pm. \nFor more information:\nCall: (978) 283-0231\nEmail: david@calvostudio.com\nWebsite: https://www.davidcalvo.com/woodcarving_classes.html

SUMMARY:CraneExplorer: Arbor Day Forest Fun
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day with a frolic through the forest on this all-ages education program which explores the biological need for habitat & shelter in an educational and experiential setting. Participants will discuss examples of shelters and dwellings\, why and how living things build shelters\, and share gratitude with the earth for providing the materials for these shelters. After brainstorming some building strategies & designs\, we will get active outside with a nature walk and then practice building shelters & fairy houses out of natural materials in the Pine Grove at Castle Hill. This program is a great way for young learners to spend time outdoors exploring creativity & gratitude for nature. \nCraneExplorer events are family-friendly programs welcoming learners of all ages. Hikes cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look\, listen\, and learn from our CraneExplorer guides. Interactive education programs include hands-on activities to engage our curiosity. CraneExplorer Programs are best suited for ages 5+. \nPlease be aware that we may walk for up to two hours and cover approximately 1-2 miles. As such\, adult discretion on your child’s ability to manage this activity is advised.
