SUMMARY:Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley (at The Actors Studio in Salisbury)
DESCRIPTION:Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland\, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door\, determined to have him\, watching the years slip away. \nWith Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families\, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then\, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion\, these yearning\, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking\, funny as hell\, and ultimately deeply moving. \nOUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a compassionate\, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love. \nVenue: The Actors Studio of Newburyport – Crossroads Plaza\n1 Merrill Street\, Unit # 3\nSalisbury\, MA 01952

SUMMARY:CAMTalk: History Series — Geology is Destiny – With Ed Becker
DESCRIPTION:The landscape of Cape Ann has been shaped by ancient geologic forces\, from the collision of tectonic plates to the movement of glacial ice. Using examples from the Museum’s current works on view\, including Edward Hopper’s 1928 painting  Cape Ann Granite\, we’ll explore how this geologic history led to Cape Ann’s important quarry industry and to landforms that have inspired artists for over two centuries. \nEd Becker is the former president of Essex County Greenbelt\, a nonprofit land trust that has conserved nearly 20\,000 acres of land north of Boston.  He has been a docent at the Cape Ann Museum since 2019.

SUMMARY:Sketchathon
DESCRIPTION:SKETCHATHON Is COMING! \nJoin Us For Our Very Favorite Winter Sketching Event on Saturday\, Feb 17th from 8am-8pm for TWELVE HOURS of sketching to support a great cause! \nThe Slow River Community will be in our studio sketching from 8am until 8pm – – learning\, laughing and creating together the whole time! Over the course of the day\, we will fill our gallery with tiny works of art that will be on sale for the whole month of February. \nSketchers of all levels are welcome to join us! Total beginners will enjoy encouragement\, free sketching lessons and fun art prompts throughout the day. More experienced sketchers will enjoy meeting people who share their passion and the chance to be inspired by new styles. Come on your own or gather up a group. You can join us for a few hours or the whole day. We plan to make this a memorable day\, so bring energy and excitement to share! \nFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS \nDo I have to sketch for all twelve hours?\nNo. We would love to have you sketch for the whole time\, but we are signing people up in three hour shifts. You can also just drop by to do a quick sketch! Please RSVP below so we know how many people to expect. \nWill we just be quietly sketching the whole time?\nNo! We will be sketching\, but it won’t be quiet. We will have music\, conversations\, sketching lessons\, silly hats and maybe even some singalongs! \nWill there be prizes for good sketches?\nNo. We expect a wonderful variety of sketching styles to emerge at this event and we believe dividing art up into categories will squelch our collective creativity. It’s all good! \nWhat supplies do I need to bring?\nWe will have pre-cut paper in three special sizes. Bring your favorite sketching or drawing supplies. We will also have lots of stuff to sketch with if you don’t have favorite supplies yet! \nAre teens welcome?\nYes! Teenagers are welcome to join us for some or all of the day. Younger children are welcome to sketch with a parent or attentive adult. Please note: this is not a drop-off event for children. \nShould We Bring Snacks?\nYes! We will supply snacks throughout the day to keep us all fueled for sketching\, but potluck snack donations are also welcome! \nI don’t want to sketch\, but can I come buy some artwork?\nYes! Stop by anytime on Saturday or later in the month to purchase sketches. We will have some fantastic stuff for sale for very low prices! \nI can’t make it on Saturday\, can I still submit some sketches for the sale?\nYes! You can sketch on your own and donate your sketches to the show. Just drop them off at the studio. We are open during class hours. \nIf you have any other questions\, please email: jess@slowriverstudio.com

SUMMARY:Club d’Elf featuring Lyle Brewer
DESCRIPTION:2/16/2024\n21+ / Positive I.D. Required. 7:30p doors / 8:15p show \nWINNER OF BEST JAZZ ARTIST\, 2023 BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS! \nClub d’Elf has been helping audiences lose track of time for twenty five years with its mesmerizing synthesis of Moroccan traditional music and electronic\, dubbed-out funk. Circling about bassist/composer Mike Rivard and drummer Dean Johnston\, each Club d’Elf performance features a different line-up\, drawn from a constellation of some of the most creative improvisers from the jazz\, DJ\, rock & world music scenes of Boston\, NYC and beyond. The band’s music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles\, including jazz\, hip hop\, electronica\, avant garde\, prog-rock and dub. Under the tutelage of member Brahim Fribgane (who hails from Casablanca) the band has absorbed Moroccan trance music\, which is now an essential part of the mix. Diverse audiences are drawn to Fribgane’s mesmerizing oud stylings\, and Rivard’s commanding playing of the Moroccan sintir. Trance forms the central core of the Club d’Elf aesthetic\, weaving together the band’s various influences. \nIn April 2022 the band released its latest album\, ‘You Never Know’\, which rose to #2 on the Relix chart. The record unfurls upon kaleidoscopic clouds of spiced smoke\, shifting from chopped dub-jazz through trance epics that reimagine Boston as a city of bazaars. \nClub d’Elf pay tribute to the music and musicians who have been primary influences\, with half the album being covers of gnawa\, Miles Davis\, Joe Zawinul\, Moroccan band Nass el-Ghiwane\, and Frank Zappa. The other half consists of original music inspired by Rivard’s personal journey into darkness following a near death experience in the remote jungle of the Peruvian Amazon. \n“You Never Know is a wide ranging romp\, full of serenity\, chaos\, longing\, improvisation and peerless musicianship inspired by music from India and Morocco as well as the maverick jazz of Miles Davis and Frank Zappa.” – Banning Eyre\, Afropop Worldwide

SUMMARY:Full Moon Story Slam – Love (at The Actors Studio in Salisbury)
DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon Stories Continue! Storytellers and audiences are enjoying The Actors Studio of Newburyport’s (TASN) eighth season of true-life stories told without notes or props on themes ranging from synchronicity to pronouns. TASN’s Full Moon Story Slam is modeled after NPR’s Moth Radio Hour. It is a story telling competition with a few simple criteria for both the official judges and the audience to vote for their favorites. \nThe Full Moon Story Slam has been a consistently popular event since its inception\, so much so that\, during Covid restrictions\, it expanded nationwide as a Zoom event. \nThe Slam is our chance to gather as friends and share true stories from our lives. Simply put\, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance\, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit – and it is great entertainment! Story slammers will tell a 5-minute short story based on the evening’s theme: “Love!” \nVenue: The Actors Studio of Newburyport – Crossroads Plaza\n1 Merrill Street\, Unit # 3\nSalisbury\, MA 01952

SUMMARY:CAMTalk: Exhibition Series — The Changing Times: The 21st century GDT Newsroom
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, the final year represented in CAM’s collection of Gloucester Daily Times photographs and in the exhibit Above the Fold\, the work of the newspaper has continued\, though not without challenges. Today\, in the United States\, an average of two daily or weekly newspapers close each week. Local coverage not only educates and brings vibrance to a community\, but also holds city officials\, businesses\, and organizations accountable to the people they serve. Cape Ann is fortunate that the GDT has largely weathered the storm in the newspaper industry. \nJoin Times staff\, Editor Andrea Holbrook\, Reporters Ethan Forman and Gail McCarthy\, and current staff photographer Paul Bilodeau as they discuss the changes that have occurred in the newsroom and in photography from the time periods highlighted in the exhibit to the present day. The panel\, moderated by Head Librarian & Archivist and curator of the exhibit Trenton Carls\, will also discuss their individual roles in the Museum’s acquisition of the estimated one million photographs as well as their work on researching and building the exhibition.
