SUMMARY:“Shark Heart: A Love Story”: An author event with Mass Book Award-Honoree Emily Habeck
DESCRIPTION:Join the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers for a special event with Mass Book Award-honoree Emily Habeck! Emily will share her gorgeous novel of metamorphosis\, marriage\, and motherhood\, Shark Heart: A Love Story. \nA sweeping love story that is at once lyrical and funny\, airy and visceral\, Shark Heart is an unforgettable novel about life’s perennial questions\, the fragility of memories\, finding joy amidst grief\, and creating a meaningful life. This daring debut\, selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, marks the arrival of a wildly talented new writer abounding with originality\, humor\, and heart. \nFor Lewis and Wren\, their first year of marriage is also their last. A few weeks after their wedding\, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness\, memories\, and intellect\, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean\, his complicated artist’s heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams. At first\, Wren internally resists her husband’s fate. Is there a way for them to be together after Lewis changes? Then\, a glimpse of Lewis’s developing carnivorous nature activates long-repressed memories for Wren\, whose story vacillates between her childhood living on a houseboat in Oklahoma\, her time with her college ex-girlfriend\, and her unusual friendship with a woman pregnant with twin birds. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nEmily Habeck holds a BFA in Theater from Southern Methodist University and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt Divinity School and Vanderbilt’s Peabody College. Her bestselling debut novel\, Shark Heart: A Love Story\, was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice\, a Book of the Month selection\, a finalist for Book of the Year\, a Goodreads choice award nominee\, and the #1 Indie Next pick for August 2023. In 2024\, Shark Heart was also shortlisted for the Massachusetts Book Award\, the Kitschies Golden Tentacle Prize\, and the Brooklyn Library Book Prize. Emily is from Ardmore\, Oklahoma and currently lives in Somerville\, Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:The Wonderful Woman Behind Oz
DESCRIPTION:In 1900\, America was introduced to both its first fairytale and its first good witches. L. Frank Baum’s iconic children’s story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ushered in a new age for the witch\, transforming these monstrous figures of old into good\, kind\, and beautiful characters. \nWhile we will never know what precisely inspired Baum to include good witches in his story\, this presentation will discuss the influence of one powerful close connection\, Matilda Joslyn Gage. Though her name is unfamiliar today\, Gage was an important leader of the first wave feminist movement\, a trailblazing human rights activist\, and the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum. \nJoin the Salem Witch Museum Department of Education on Wednesday\, March 26th at 6:00 pm EST for this free virtual program about the fascinating woman behind Oz. This presentation will discuss the life and work of Matilda Joslyn Gage\, her relationship with her famous-son-in-law\, and the effect of Baum’s work on the evolving perception of the witch. \n

SUMMARY:REBELS at SEA: PRIVATEERING in the AMERICAN REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:The best-selling author of Black Flags\, Blue Waters reclaims the daring freelance sailors who proved essential to the winning of the Revolutionary War. \nThe heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before\, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels\, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war\, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all\, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. \nIn Rebels at Sea\, Dolin corrects that significant omission\, and contends that privateers\, though often seen as profiteers at best and pirates at worst\, were in fact critical to the Revolution’s outcome. \nArmed with cannons\, swivel guns\, muskets\, and pikes―as well as government documents granting them the right to seize enemy ships―thousands of privateers tormented the British on the broad Atlantic and in bays and harbors on both sides of the ocean. \nAbounding with tales of daring maneuvers and deadly encounters\, Rebels at Sea presents the American Revolution as we have rarely seen it before. \nJOIN US! This event is a collaboration with Andover Bookstore.\nEric Jay Dolin Books will be available at the event at a discounted\nprice \nhttps://andoverhistoryandculture.org/revolution-250\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/eric-jay-dolin-lecture-and-book-signing
