DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\nCAM Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $10\nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nIn the age of sail\, the efficient movement of people and goods around the early maritime Atlantic world relied on the strength of woven fabric and the means to repair it successfully. Sails underwent extensive wear and required regular maintenance and repair work completed by sailors onboard ships while at sea or by sailmakers while in ports. By focusing on ship sails as a technology of maritime movement\, sailcloth repair offers insights into the value of repair practices within maritime businesses. Using extant material culture and archival documents from New England’s many maritime collections\, this presentation traces the history of sail repair inside sailmakers’ lofts\, on the decks of ships\, and within marine insurance policies. \nEmily Whitted is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whose work focuses on early American history\, material culture\, and public history. Her dissertation project\, “Darned\, Patched\, and Mended: Repairing Textiles in Early America\,” examines early American textile repair work as an integral\, everyday practice completed with needles and thread to maintain fabric’s life cycles within homes\, ships\, and military camps. The band is fronted by 24 year old piano phenom\, Jack Favazza\, who brings a youthful exuberance to this classic American songbook. This group plays a wide catalogue of music from America’s own Piano Man\, Billy Joel\, spanning his entire musical career from the 70’s\, 80’s\, and 90’s. Playing both well known hits\, alongside of b-side fan favorites\, there are surely songs to appease any audience member. \nWith a long standing passion for the music of Billy Joel\, the band formed in late 2022\, after founding members had seen a performance of Billy at the legendary Fenway Park in Boston\, MA during the summer of that same year. That performance solidified the decision to perform Billy Joel’s music to as many people as possible. Gloucester has a long history of talented artists\, and Captain Jack & The Strangers is no different. A local “supergroup” of musicians from well known acts such as Groove Therapy\, The Spynz\, Mystery Meat\, and the Neon 90’s have formed this group to bring you the high energy\, soft somber moments\, and everything in between that Billy Joel is so well known for. Listening to any song at a show will surely invoke your favorite memories and emotions when you hear a specific Billy Joel song done in a way that only Captain Jack & The Strangers can do.

Featuring artist books\, altered books\, and book illustration\, “Boundless” showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling\, visual poetry\, personal narratives\, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang\, twist\, stand\, open like advent calendars\, or defy conventional forms altogether. \nThe exhibition presents a wide array of techniques\, including letterpress\, etching\, monoprint\, painting\, photography\, and mixed media. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) presents Coming Home\, a multi-disciplinary exhibit curated by Artist and NAA Executive Director Belle Carver Struck. \nComing Home invites Newburyport creatives who grew up in the community and now make their home elsewhere — to “come home” and share how it formed their practice. Their work is juxtaposed with creatives who carved out their adult creative practice in Newburyport. The exhibit features visual art\, film\, music and writing. \nThis exhibit will include a free opening reception on Sunday\, July 27th from 4-6pm\, as well as a ticketed panel discussion moderated by local storyteller\, actor\, and educator Paul Wann on Monday\, July 28th from 6-8pm. The panel will include; Michael Angelis\, Kate Bolick\, Nikole Beckwith\, Paul-Emile Cendron\, Carmela Murphy\, Sam Szabo\, Gordon Przybyla\, and Edward Speck. \nTickets to the panel discussion can be purchased online at newburyportart.org – space is limited! \nOn view alongside Coming Home will be 30 Under 30\, featuring 30 artworks by artists under the age of 30. A reception for 30 Under 30 will be held on August 9th from 4-6pm. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm and Sunday (Summer 2025 Hours) from 10:00am–2:00pm. Newburyport Art is closed on Mondays. The ground-floor Hills Gallery has an accessible entrance. Originally launched in 1926 as a working fishing schooner\, Adventure has been lovingly restored and is now a floating museum dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of New England’s fishing heritage. \nOn your tour\, you’ll walk the very decks where dorymen once hauled in their catch\, learn about life at sea in the 1920s\, and hear the incredible story of how this National Historic Landmark was saved from decay. Knowledgeable and passionate docents—many of whom have sailed Adventure themselves—will bring her stories to life\, from the golden age of sail to her current role as an ambassador for maritime history and education. \nWhether you’re a maritime buff\, a curious traveler\, or a family looking for a fun and educational outing\, a deck tour of the Schooner Adventure is a hands-on experience you won’t forget. DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Dates: July 17-August 24\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, July 20\, 5pm-7pm \nThis dynamic exhibition explores the rich and ever-evolving world of the book as an art form. Featuring artist books\, altered books\, and book illustration\, “Boundless” showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling\, visual poetry\, personal narratives\, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang\, twist\, stand\, open like advent calendars\, or defy conventional forms altogether. \nThe exhibition presents a wide array of techniques\, including letterpress\, etching\, monoprint\, painting\, photography\, and mixed media. Through these varied practices\, artists explore themes of memory\, imagination\, identity\, and the contemporary moment. \n“Boundless” features contributions from a distinguished group of 29 artists\, including local creatives\, university faculty\, and artists affiliated with book arts communities throughout New England and beyond—Boston\, Philadelphia\, New York\, New Hampshire\, and Maine. \nExhibiting Artists:\nRen Barnes\, Stevens Brosnihan\, Rachel Church\, Pamela Courtleigh\, Haig Demarjian\, Mary Dewey\, Madge Evers\, Lynda Fatalo\, Cristina Hajosy\, Hannah Jacoby-Brooks\, Linda Kauss\, Giles Laroche\, Kelle Louaillier\, Leslie Lyman\, Fred Lynch\, Claire B.
