SUMMARY:REBELS at SEA: PRIVATEERING in the AMERICAN REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:The best-selling author of Black Flags\, Blue Waters reclaims the daring freelance sailors who proved essential to the winning of the Revolutionary War. \nThe heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before\, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels\, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war\, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all\, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. \nIn Rebels at Sea\, Dolin corrects that significant omission\, and contends that privateers\, though often seen as profiteers at best and pirates at worst\, were in fact critical to the Revolution’s outcome. \nArmed with cannons\, swivel guns\, muskets\, and pikes―as well as government documents granting them the right to seize enemy ships―thousands of privateers tormented the British on the broad Atlantic and in bays and harbors on both sides of the ocean. \nAbounding with tales of daring maneuvers and deadly encounters\, Rebels at Sea presents the American Revolution as we have rarely seen it before. \nJOIN US! This event is a collaboration with Andover Bookstore.\nEric Jay Dolin Books will be available at the event at a discounted\nprice \nhttps://andoverhistoryandculture.org/revolution-250\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/eric-jay-dolin-lecture-and-book-signing

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Author Anita Diamant
DESCRIPTION:Wenham Museum is thrilled to present bestselling author Anita Diamant in conversation with Kristin Czarnecki about The Boston Girl\, an unforgettable novel about family ties and values\, friendship and feminism told through the eyes of a young Jewish woman growing up in Boston in the early twentieth century. Through the lens of the novel\, the discussion will explore what life was like for women of this time. While The Boston Girl is fictional\, many of the historical elements in the novel are based on fact\, such as the development of vacation homes for working women. Wenham’s own Iron Rail Vacation Home for Girls\, founded by Helen Clay Frick\, is one such example\, and will be the subject of an exhibit at Wenham Museum this spring. \nFollowing the conversation\, Anita Diamant will sign books. \nAbout The Boston Girl \nAddie Baum is The Boston Girl\, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End\, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood\, Addie’s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts\, movies\, celebrity culture\, and new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. She wants a career and to find true love. \nEighty-five-year-old Addie tells the story of her life to her twenty-two-year-old granddaughter\, who has asked her “How did you get to be the woman you are today.” She begins in 1915\, the year she found her voice and made friends who would help shape the course of her life. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters\, to the library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house\, to the Rockport Lodge vacation home for working women\, to her first\, disastrous love affair\, Addie recalls her adventures with compassion for the naïve girl she was and a wicked sense of humor. \nWritten with the same attention to historical detail and emotional resonance that made Anita Diamant’s previous novels bestsellers\, The Boston Girl is a moving portrait of one woman’s complicated life in twentieth century America\, and a fascinating look at a generation of women finding their places in a changing world. \nAbout Anita Diamant \nAnita Diamant is the bestselling author of the novels The Boston Girl\, The Red Tent\, Good Harbor\, The Last Days of Dogtown\, and Day After Night\, and the collection of essays\, Pitching My Tent. An award-winning journalist whose work appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine and Parenting\, and many others\, she is the author of six nonfiction guides to contemporary Jewish life. Her most recent book is Period. End of Sentence.: A New Chapter in the Fight for Menstrual Justice. Anita Diamant lives in Massachusetts. Visit her website at AnitaDiamant.com. \nAbout Kristin Czarnecki \nKristin Czarnecki is the Executive Director of the Rockport Art Association & Museum and an author. A former English professor\, Kristin has had a lifelong love of reading and writing and has published many essays on her favorite authors. She is also the author of two memoirs\, Encounters with Inscriptions and The First Kristin: The Story of a Naming. \nTICKETS:\nMember: $18\nNonmember: $20 \nThis program is recommended for teens and adults.
