SUMMARY:Music in the Atrium: Celebrate Mother Earth with Johnny Fireseed
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Atrium \nIncluded with admission\nSalem residents and workers always get free admission. \nThis program will contribute to the sound in the Atrium. If you would like to borrow noise canceling headphones\, please pick up a KultureCity bag at the coatroom. \nABOVE IMAGE: Illustrations by Chris Cyr. \nThis month\, our Music in the Atrium series celebrates Planet Earth with live performances by Johnny Fireseed. A project of Framingham-based Fireseed Arts Studios\, lead by artist and musician Patiño Vázquez in collaboration with local musicians and craftspeople\, Johnny Fireseed uses instruments made entirely from upcycled trash and repurposed items to perform original music with an upbeat eco message. The band’s inspiring sound aims to spread a message of joy\, fun and new ways of thinking about consumption and waste far and wide. \nVázquez will be showcasing instruments made from locally harvested trash and live looping to create ambient soundscapes. Come hear high-end electric guitars made from old kitchen countertops and drums fashioned from ventilation ducts and popcorn tins in an aesthetic that’s “part Victorian Steampunk with elements of mystic meditations in heart-opening layers of rhythms and harmonies.” Building loops and then improvising over the loops gives the listener a feel for the looks and sound characteristics of each instrument. Audience members are often invited to join in the fun! \nMusic in the Atrium is PEM’s live concert series that features local and visiting performers from a variety of musical traditions and styles. Concerts take place on select Sundays. Explore upcoming shows at pem.org/events.

SUMMARY:Patriots Day Remembrance 2025
DESCRIPTION:Every year on Patriots Day\, the members of the Danvers Alarm List Company gather to honor the brave men from Danvers who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Jason Russell House on April 19th\, 1775\, by participating in a special mini-marathon. This year\, in commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of Patriots Day\, we’re expanding our programming. For the first time\, we’ll offer Trolley transportation\, allowing not only our reenactors but also members of the public to join us at each of our historic stops. Our knowledgeable reenactors will share the story of the 16 mile march made to the Battle of Menotomy and the lives of the men we lost that day. At each stop of the graves and monuments dedicated to the seven Danvers men\, we will hold a brief ceremony and a volley salute. Reenactors will also bring history to life with engaging spoken dialogue aboard the Trolleys. Be sure to stay tuned for the most up-to-date information on the schedule and Trolley registration.\n\nBelow are the stops without the exact times as we are still finalizing this. Capt. Israel Hutchinson commanded a Minute company that fought in Menotomy. Hutchinson lived in a home on Water Street in Danversport\, which is no longer standing. The bodies of the Danvers dead were brought back to this house on April 20\, 1775. A granite marker marks the location of the house.\nReuben Keniston Grave – Leach Burial Ground (Elliot Street Danvers). Ruben Keniston was a Beverly man who marched to Menotomy with Capt. Israel Hutchinson’s company. He was killed on April 19th.\nNurse Homestead Cemetery (Pine Street Danvers). SUMMARY:Shark Anatomy & Biology with AWSC
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on program is geared towards children and families\, and is led by our special guests from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Participants will assemble a life-size puzzle of a juvenile white shark and a life-size puzzle of an adult white shark. Learners will then discuss how sharks grow and change from juvenile to adult and what is required for them to grow. With examples of shark teeth to discuss how feeding and diet change\, this program will demonstrate how sharks need food to grow and swim! Participants will then take their investigation a step further by exploring the similarities and differences between white sharks and whales\, boney fish\, seals\, and more. Through interactive exploration\, learners will develop an understanding of how marine animals utilize and travel ocean waters in various ways. \nOur guests from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy are also offering a lecture later the same day at The Crane Estate: Awareness Inspires Conservation\, 4/22 from 6-7:30pm: https://thetrustees.org/event/425258/ \nShark enthusiasts might want to join us for both events and enjoy a walk or picnic on the Estate grounds in between the programs. \nThis is a family-friendly program welcoming learners of all ages which includes hands-on activities to engage curiosity. SUMMARY:Vox Populi – Towns of Massachusetts & the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the two and a half centuries since American Independence was declared and secured\, little attention has been spent looking into the roles of communities other than those who participated in significant events or were centers of population. In this talk we will examine the hearts and minds of the people and communities across Massachusetts to understand why they would risk their lives\, liberties and fortunes for a new nation \nJonathan Lane is an historian with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the coordinator for Revolution 250\, an organization dedicated to commemorating the American Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
DESCRIPTION:As our coastlines change\, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024\, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators\, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines. \nOne of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)\, a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems. \nJoin us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts\, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research. \nAt the end of the program\, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation. \nAbout our speaker: \nKristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role\, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives\, including educational programs\, community outreach efforts\, the college internship program\, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show\, Channel 7 News Boston\, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. \nThe Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety surrounding white sharks. SUMMARY:Vox Populi: Towns of Massachusetts and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the two and a half centuries since American Independence was declared and secured\, little attention has been spent looking into the roles of communities other than those who participated in significant events or were centers of population. Boston\, Lexington\, Concord\, & Bunker Hill play an outsized role in the public memory of the American Revolution. In this talk\, we will examine the hearts and minds of the people and communities across Massachusetts to understand why they would risk their lives\, liberties\, and fortunes for a new nation. \nJonathan Lane is a historian with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the coordinator for Revolution 250\, an organization dedicated to commemorating the American Revolutionary War. \nDoors at 6:00/Presentation at 6:30 \nCLICK HERE to purchase tickets
