DESCRIPTION:Geri McCormick and James Grieshaber will give an explanation of chromatic wood type and how they have recreated the making process to revive historic chromatic fonts at Virgin Wood Type in Rochester\, NY. Their rediscovery of the process has led to an all new design which debuted earlier this year called Marquee.\nThere will be an informal activity following the talk where attendees will be able to pull a proof of a historic William H. Page chromatic wood type ca. 1849 and the new Marquee font from Virgin Wood Type made just this year. \nAbout the Museum of Printing\n \nThe Museum of Printing is a non-profit dedicated to preserving the rich history of the graphic arts\, printing and typesetting technology\, and printing craftsmanship. In addition to many special collections and small exhibits\, the Museum contains hundreds of antique printing\, typesetting\, and bindery machines\, as well as a library of books and printing-related documents and a recently added bible room. \nThe Museum is located at 15 Thornton Avenue in Haverhill\, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

DESCRIPTION:Samara Joy has emerged as one of the most extraordinary voices in contemporary jazz\, achieving a level of acclaim and visibility rarely seen at such a young age. At just 26\, the Bronx-born vocalist has earned five GRAMMY Awards—including Best New Artist—along with an NAACP Image Award\, signaling her arrival as a defining artist of her generation. With a sound rooted deeply in jazz tradition and a presence that resonates across generations\, Joy has become a powerful ambassador for classic American music in the modern era. \nA native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which Down Beat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award this year for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist\, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra and her late mentor Barry Harris.

DESCRIPTION:Set sail with us this September! \nJoin the Merrimack River Watershed Council for a special Sunset Sail aboard the historic Schooner Ardelle. Departing from Newburyport Harbor on Monday\, September 21 at 5:30 PM\, we’ll take in the last of the summer sunsets together. This exclusive evening on the water will bring together MRWC’s donors\, supporters\, and friends for a memorable experience at the place where the Merrimack River meets the sea. \nThe Sunset Sail is more than a beautiful evening aboard a historic schooner. It is a chance to gather in community\, celebrate the Merrimack River\, and look ahead to a cleaner\, safer future for Newburyport Harbor and the watershed we share. Guests can connect with MRWC’s leadership on the communities\, wildlife\, and working waterfronts that depend on clean water — and the shared responsibility we all have to protect it. \nThis event also comes at an important moment for MRWC’s work in Newburyport. After several years of concerning results in our water quality monitoring by our team and volunteers\, we are launching an investigation into persistent high bacteria levels in Newburyport Harbor. This Sunset Sail helps to support the science\, advocacy\, and community partnerships needed to better understand these challenges and work toward long-term solutions. \nGuests will sail aboard the Schooner Ardelle\, a beautiful historic vessel built and captained by Harold A. Burnham\, a master shipwright who has built several prominent local schooners. The Ardelle is rarely chartered out of Newburyport Harbor\, making this a unique opportunity to experience the lower Merrimack in a new way. \nAll proceeds from the Sunset Sail benefit MRWC’s mission to protect and restore the Merrimack River. We hope you’ll join us for an inspiring evening as we explore the future of the Merrimack together.
