SUMMARY:Cantemus Presents "I Hear America Singing"
DESCRIPTION:Cantemus Chamber Chorus\, with 40 members from across the North Shore\, will present two May concerts in Beverly and Newburyport titled “I Hear America Singing.” Featuring African-American Spirituals and music by Charles Ives\, Aaron Copland\, Rosephanye Powell\, Charlene Archibeque\, Cecil Effinger\, Bob Dylan\, and more\, texts are by American poets Walt Whitman\, Emily Dickinson\, Langston Hughes\, and others. \nThe concerts will explore what it means to be American – the American Landscape\, the American Dream\, Songs of Protest\, Songs of the American Diaspora\, Songs on American Poetry\, and finally asks: The American Dream Restored? \nJoining the Chorus will be guitarist Chris Rubén-Winters and oboist Benjamin Fox. Rubén-Winters draws from deep roots in jazz\, salsa\, and classical music and his playing has enriched performances of multiple Massachusetts choral groups. Fox’s versatility and virtuosity have been showcased in a variety of venues\, from Carnegie Hall to Honolulu nightclubs. He is the Principal Oboist of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and holds the same position with the Marsh Chapel Collegium.\nIn addition\, Cantemus accompanist Jeffrey Mead will be joined by Cantemus singer and pianist Patricia Clark in Charles Ives’ “Variations on America.” Solo work and ensembles will be featured throughout the varied program. \nThe concerts will take place in Beverly on Saturday\, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 4 Ocean St.\, and in Newburyport on Sunday\, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, 166 High St. \nCantemus’ Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi said: “In fraught times\, music can be a healing balm. It can also provide a means for us to process difficult emotions. As we prepare this program offering varied perspectives on America\, we are reminded that the American Dream is not a guarantee\, but an ideal we must continually work together to preserve.” \nFor more information about the program and to purchase tickets\, visit www.cantemus.org/spring. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.\nCantemus gratefully acknowledges sponsorship support from the Institution for Savings and Eastern Bank\, and funding support from the Local Cultural Councils of Beverly\, Essex\, Hamilton-Wenham\, Newbury\, and Newburyport. Cantemus participates in the Card to Culture program\, a Mass Cultural Council initiative that offers reduced-price tickets to card holders. \nCantemus is a member of Chorus America\, MASSCreative.org\, and the Greater Boston Choral Consortium.

With an emphasis on recent work you will certainly see themes that reoccur throughout the years of his body of work. From richly painted Greek landscapes to expressive caricatures and evocative figure studies\, Of note is the book that he wrote and illustrated\, entitled “Sammy Smart Guy”. Christoforos’ work reflects his journey from self-taught animator to a dynamic studio artist.\nThe community is invited to meet the artist during the reception on Sunday\, May 18th. and explore his work during gallery hours\, 12:00–5:00 PM daily throughout the exhibition week.\nAdmission is free. SUMMARY:5-Day Bare Bones Wood Carving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learning woodcarving is a lot like learning how to write in a language. You need to know the letters of the alphabet and what is a vowel and what is a consonant. You need to learn how to put together a word and understand the meaning of it. Then you need to learn how to form a sentence and a paragraph that carries a theme. These are absolute necessities that you need to know in order to write. The same is true in woodcarving\, there are absolute necessities you need to know in order to carve with intent and confidence. So in all truth\, I need five days of your time in order to get the complete set of fundamentals into both your hands and your head. \nHowever\, I often get asked if I have weekend courses because of time restrictions. For those of you who cannot find time for the five consecutive days\, this is what I do. If you take a two or three-day course you are taking the first two or three days of my five-day workshop which is broken up into daily learning chapters. So three days brings you to chapter three\, two days to chapter two. The weekend workshops will give you a basic understanding of the skill of wood carving which includes hand-carving technique\, sharpening\, and designing skills among other topics but the full training takes five days. You will also do the carving projects to reinforce the hand techniques that we talk about so that you gain much-needed muscle memory in your hands. \nSome students may be satisfied with the information learned\, while others may choose to find their way back for another weekend and finish the last two or three days to get all the necessary techniques and insights. When you return\, (it can be during that calendar year or the next) everyone else is at the beginning point on the start of the weekend\, but you pick up where you left off to finish your training. That’s the story in a nutshell. Call me if you are looking for more info. I am happy to answer any questions. \nAll class days run from 9 am – 5 pm. \nFor more information:\nCall: (978) 283-0231\nEmail: david@calvostudio.com\nWebsite: https://www.davidcalvo.com/woodcarving_classes.html

SUMMARY:“Mole Is Not Alone”: Spring Storytime with Children’s Authors Maya Tatsukawa and Hanna Cha
DESCRIPTION:Join the Peabody Institute Library for a special event with acclaimed children’s author and Mass Book Award-Honoree Maya Tatsukawa\, who will present Mole Is Not Alone and her brand-new book\, Otter Carries On! Maya will be joined in conversation by author-illustrator Hanna Cha. \nMole is invited to a party\, which is very worrisome. What if the party is too rowdy for Mole? What if Mole doesn’t know anyone there? What if Mole is just too shy to make friends? Mole worries through the tunnels\, around Snake’s burrow\, under the forest\, past Bear’s den\, and all the way to Rabbit’s door. But despite all those worries\, maybe Mole can find a quiet way to make friends . . . \nIn this cozy picture book about friendship\, Mole anxiously decides to journey through underground tunnels to attend a party. \nWith warm and sweet illustrations\, every page of Mole Is Not Alone is an invitation to look and look again. Readers can follow Mole’s tunnel as it connects from one page to the next\, learning along the way that everyone can make friends\, even if some parties are quieter than others. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nMaya Tatsukawa is a children’s book author\, illustrator\, and designer residing just out of Boston with her cat/studio manager. When she’s not designing\, illustrating\, or thinking about children’s books\, you can find her baking cream puffs\, eating ice cream\, or searching for the perfect scone. She is the author and illustrator of Sunday Pancakes\, which was a 2023 Mass Book Awards Honors title\, Mole Is Not Alone\, a 2024 Mass Book Awards Honoree\, The Bear in My Family\, and Otter Carries On (2025). \nHanna Cha is a Caldecott Honor award-winning illustrator and writer with several books under her belt. She is the creator of her first book Tiny Feet Between the Mountains and illustrated Circle Round by Anne Sibley O’Brien. She was also the recipient of the Caldecott Honor and the APALA winner for The Truth about Dragons by Julie Leung and also part of the Junior Library Gold Standard Selection for The House Before Falling Into the Sea by Ann Suk Wang.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Tea on a Gambrel Roof w/Tea & Cake
DESCRIPTION:A dramatization of ‘A Gambrel Roof’\, a poem by Lucy Larcom. \nA creative multi-disciplinary theatrical presentation of a circa 1875 local poem about the historic Danvers Jeremiah Page House. Period music\, an art installation\, historic tea blends\, and signature cakes add to the illustration of the story: \nIn about 1770\, when the British monarchy started taxing tea in the colonies\, Jeremiah told Sarah that “no tea shall be drunk in this house”.  However\, while her husband was away one day\, Sarah and two friends secretly had their tea ON the roof of the house.  In Sarah’s words\, “Upon a house is not within it”\, so she was still obeying her husband’s wishes.  This story was told to Anne L. Page\, Jeremiah’s granddaughter\, by a family friend many years later. Anne then told it to her friend Lucy Larcom\, the famous Beverly poet.  Lucy romanticized the story in the poem “A Gambrel Roof\,” written as the 100th birthday of our nation approached and published in the Atlantic Monthly. \nThere will be a Q&A session after the production\, moderated by historian Dan Gagnon. \nWheelchair accessible building and parking available. Additional parking in the Elm Street lot. \nDanvers Historical Society: 978-777-1666 or E-mail to connect@danvershistory.org

SUMMARY:Coastal Hike & Climate Café
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hike and climate café discussion on May 18th 12-3pm at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. The event will start with a ~2-mile Cedar Point hike through the forest\, marsh\, dunes\, and beach\, to observe and discuss our changing coastlines. Then we will head back to the Casino at Castle Hill for a climate cafe discussion. \nClimate cafés are community discussions about environmental issues. These teen-led discussions invite participants to discuss and learn more about the environment\, how humans are imacting it\, and how we can take action to be better citizens of the earth. Our teen leaders will share a few issues and questions\, and then participants will discuss in small groups and then share out at the end. The goal of the session is to CLARIFY environmental issues impacting our community\, CONNECT different members and groups of the community around a central issue that matters to everyone\, and CREATE solutions that can be scaled up to help the environment. \nThis is a youth-led event and youth (or anyone) interested in environmental advocacy is encouraged to join us. \nLearn more about climate cafés here: https://www.climate-cafe.org/ \nAccessibility: This hike has an moderate level of difficulty\, and requires hiking 2-3 miles on unpaved and sandy trails\, with moderate elevation gain for approximately 2 hours.
