SUMMARY:Our Founding Mothers and Fathers: More Revolutionary War Connections to the Salem Witch Trials
DESCRIPTION:Each year we meet hundreds\, if not thousands\, of individuals who can trace their family line back to the Salem witch trials. We often tell visitors that the English colonists of 1692 were the founding fathers and mothers of our country. They were themselves descended from the earliest settlers\, who were establishing a new country and took the biblical instruction “be fruitful and multiply” to heart. \nIt is fascinating to consider the many connections between the Salem witch trials and the Revolutionary War generation\, particularly the one most often referred to as our “Founding Fathers.” Part II of our Rev250 lecture series will focus on four more notable connections\, including witchcraft skeptic Robert Calef\, Ipswich court clerk Thomas Wade\, condemned witch Mary Bradbury\, and accuser Bathsheba Pope. \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17th at 1:00 pm for this free\, virtual program.\nRegistration is required for this event.

DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

A four part suite of music inspired by the fire festivals which mark the seasons of the traditional Celtic Year: Samhain (Winter)\, Imbolc (Spring)\, Bealtaine (Summer) and Lunasa (Autumn). With poetry woven throughout\, this world premier will be performed by Nuala with the incredible House band (Logan Coale\, Maeve Gilchrist\, Alan Murray and more) In the first act of the show\, Irish Music Legend\, Seamus Egan and Artistic Director Maeve Gilchrist join forces with strings to perform tunes from their new album ‘Into the Ice’\, a sonic retelling of the famous Shackleton expedition\, through the lens of traditional Irish Music\, electronics and prose. Prepare to be transported! In addition we have two more of Vivaldi’s seasons to round off the year\, sing-along shanties with the inimitable David Coffin and all types of one-off collaborations including a harp duet and lush string arrangements of traditional Celtic tunes!

DESCRIPTION:Join the Bayliss Society at the Cape Ann Museum on September 13 for the closing program of this year’s Jonathan Bayliss Society annual conference\, “Gloucester’s Acropolis: Defining the City Then and Now.” This final session features a series of short talks exploring the role and influence of Cape Ann Museum in the community life of Gloucester throughout its existence\, with a glimpse toward an exciting future as well. \nSpeakers are CAM’s Director Oliver Barker\, Chief Curator Martha Oaks\, and former Museum volunteer Deanie Hancock French. Deanie’s father\, the major American sculptor Walker Hancock\, was involved for many years in the development of what was then called the Cape Ann Historical Association. \nAbout the Conference \nNovelist Jonathan Bayliss (1926–2009) coined the term Acropolis to describe the cluster of civic institutions rising above Gloucester Harbor—City Hall\, Sawyer Free Library\, the Museum\, and neighboring landmarks. This year’s conference brings that idea to life through talks\, walks\, and readings from September 11–13\, exploring how this hillside cultural district has shaped Gloucester from the 19th century to today. \nThe conference is organized by the Jonathan Bayliss Society in collaboration with Cape Ann Museum\, Gloucester Writers Center\, and Sawyer Free Library\, with support from the Gloucester Cultural Council\, Mass Cultural Council\, and the Bruce Cove Foundation. \nMore information is available at www.jonathanbayliss.org/acropolis.

DESCRIPTION:It’s Base Ball\, 1864 style at Spencer Peirce Little Farm! These fun\, historically accurate games feature underhand pitching without gloves. A ball bounced once and caught is an out! Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how “America’s favorite pastime” was played in the 1860s. The teams competing are based on actual nineteenth-century baseball clubs from New England. \nThe Essex Base Ball Organization is a nonprofit “vintage base ball” group that plays the game as it was played in the 1860s. They are based out of Newbury\, Massachusetts\, and have four teams. They teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations\, offering youth clinics and lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations. \nSee HNE website for first pitch times; triple headers start at 11 AM\, doubles at noon.

In the second half of the concert we bring back Canada’s award-winning quartet\, The Fretless\, this time joining forces with the stunning vocals of Madeleine Rogers. This pan-Canadian group is reinventing the meaning of string quartet and bringing the sounds of their respective string cultures into indie territory\, garnering new audiences\, new sounds and creating a whole new horizon. Pulling it all together\, Rockport’s Artistic Director Maeve Gilchrist will bring her harp\, poetry and context to each act to turn this whole evening into an unforgettable story of songs\, tunes and concerti!

The ensemble features artists from an array of bands including – North Mississippi Allstars \,Dickey Betts and Great Southern\, Pink Talking Fish\, Neighbor\, Dub Apocalypse\, Peter Wolf’s Midnight Travelers\, Dickey Betts Great Southern\, Slightly Stoopid\, Sonya Rae Taylor\, Band of Killers and more. \nMatt Zeiner began his professional music career touring with Matt “Guitar” Murphy\, who exposed him to a fusion of blues and jazz. His career took a significant turn in 2000 when Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band recruited him as a keyboardist and vocalist\, leading to a fruitful collaboration and tour. \nRyan Taylor on slide guitar spearheads the band with his exceptional talents. His journey\, steeped in the rich musical traditions of Austin and Nashville\, saw Ryan honing his craft the old-fashioned way. \nJohnny Trama on guitar conjures up riffs and rhythms that speak volumes. His journey through the realms of rock\, soul\, and blues\, playing with icons like Bettye LaVette and Jesse Dee\, has armed him with a mystical musical prowess. \nJesse Williams on bass is an alchemist of groove\, spinning each note into a rhythmic tapestry. His Grammy-nominated escapades with the likes of Duke Robillard and Joe Louis Walker have endowed him with a bass prowess that’s both fluid and formidable. \nTom Arey behind the drums is nothing short of a powerhouse\, orchestrating beats and fills with the finesse of a seasoned composer. His tenure with Peter Wolf’s Midnight Travelers has honed a style that’s explosive yet eloquent\, much like the Allmans’ own percussive legends. \nBrendan Tommaney on percussion is a true artist\, painting rhythms with a palette of beats and textures. Educated at the New England Conservatory of Music and seasoned with groups like Pink Talking Fish\, Tommaney brings a jazz-infused sensibility that adds depth and dimension to the band’s sound. \nPaul Wolstencroft on keyboards crafts melodies that mesmerize and transport.
