SUMMARY:Vox Populi – Towns of Massachusetts & the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the two and a half centuries since American Independence was declared and secured\, little attention has been spent looking into the roles of communities other than those who participated in significant events or were centers of population. Boston\, Lexington\, Concord\, & Bunker Hill play an outsized role in the public memory of the American Revolution. In this talk we will examine the hearts and minds of the people and communities across Massachusetts to understand why they would risk their lives\, liberties and fortunes for a new nation \nJonathan Lane is an historian with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the coordinator for Revolution 250\, an organization dedicated to commemorating the American Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:Coastal Lecture: Awareness Inspires Conservation
DESCRIPTION:As our coastlines change\, the areas where sharks visit along the coast is changing. With all the shark-tivity in 2024\, the team at Crane Beach has been working with experts to learn more about these important top predators\, and what their presence means for the health of our coastlines. \nOne of the groups we’ve been collaborating with is the The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC)\, a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety. AWSC strives to increase knowledge of Atlantic white sharks to change public perception and conserve the species and ensure biologically diverse marine ecosystems. \nJoin us for a lecture with AWSC Community Engagement Manager Kristen Smith. To learn about ongoing white shark research projects being conducted and funded by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy\, how that research is impacting conservation and public safety efforts\, and up to date information on what that research has taught us. Audience members will have an opportunity to view videos and photographs during the research season and develop their knowledge of what a shark is and what it takes to conduct white shark research. \nAt the end of the program\, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how they can get involved in shark and ocean conservation. \nAbout our speaker: \nKristen Smith works as the Community Engagement Manager for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC). Kristen attended Coastal Carolina University from where she received her degree in Marine Science and aided in her university’s shark research program. Kristen has been with the AWSC since 2016. In her role\, she coordinates and manages a variety of initiatives\, including educational programs\, community outreach efforts\, the college internship program\, and social media campaigns. Kristen has been featured on platforms such as the Today Show\, Channel 7 News Boston\, and Good Morning America. These appearances have highlighted AWSC’s white shark ecotourism program and public safety initiatives related to white sharks. \nThe Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) is a nonprofit organization supporting scientific research\, educating the community\, and improving public safety surrounding white sharks. SUMMARY:Facing Colonel Alexander Leslie
DESCRIPTION:How\, why & where the first battle of the American Revolution could have happened at Salem’s North Bridge in February 1775 instead of in Lexington and at Concord’s North Bridge on April 19th. \nLess than two months before April 19th in 1775\, the American Revolution’s first land battle could have taken place in Marblehead and/or Salem instead of in Lexington and Concord\, in the exact same scenario. The “Salem Alarm” event that occurred in Salem on February 26th\, 1775 and later became known as “Leslie’s Retreat\,” is now quite familiar — especially after the big 250th anniversary reenactment a few weeks ago\, and several educational events about it. \nHere in Danvers on April 23rd\, an illustrated program will explore the human side of the near-miss episode\, along with its geographical and social context. \nWho was the “Leslie” of “Leslie’s Retreat” ? — Why did he and his Regular Army troops march through the crowded and volatile metropolis of Marblehead to march into Salem? — And where in Marblehead did they land? \nSocial and cultural historian Judy Anderson of Marblehead will introduce Colonel Alexander Leslie as a person\, along with a few of the other individuals who were involved — most of whom were remarkably young ! … She will also note who were NOT involved\, contrary to common assumptions and portrayals of the tense confrontation on that cold February day. … Along the way\, she will illuminate what Marblehead actually was in 1775\, as opposed to what people think it was — especially in relation to Danvers and Salem. Because in 1775\, all three were VERY different communities. \nPortrait of Lt. Colonel Alexander Leslie as a General (in 1776) by Thomas Gainsborough. Private collection in Scotland. \nDetail of a painting by J.O.J. Frost (1920s)\, depicting the landing of Colonel Leslie’s troops at a cove in Marblehead Harbor. Marblehead Museum collection. \nWe are proud to participate in Mass Cultural Council’s Card to Culture program. \nSpeaker Series typically every 3rd Wednesday\, 7pm.\nIncluding a temporary exhibit of related artifacts from the Society’s collections.\nTapley Memorial Hall 13 Page Street\, Danvers MA.\nDanvers Historical Society: 978-777-1666 or E-mail to dhs@danvershistory.org   Donations appreciated. \nLearn more here: https://www.danvershistory.org/2025/04/facing-colonel-alexander-leslie/

Over the past three decades\, Dweezil has carved out an eclectic and illustrious career that spans music\, television\, film\, and entrepreneurship. \nA Grammy-winning guitarist\, Dweezil has left an indelible mark on the music industry with over 2000 concerts performed worldwide. Known for his masterful performances and deep connection to his father’s music\, he’s returning to concert stages in 2024 for the first time since the 2020 Hot Ratz Live! Tour\, continuing to guide fans through the thrilling and sophisticated world of his father’s music. \nHis virtuosity on the guitar is matched only by his prolific compositional skills\, which have generated numerous original works spanning multiple albums including “Confessions of Deprived Youth” (1991) and “Via Zammata” (2015). Notably\, his compositions have even been performed by a 100-piece orchestra in Holland\, showcasing his versatility and command of orchestral arrangements. His music effortlessly traverses genres\, seamlessly weaving together elements of rock\, fusion\, and experimental sounds\, all while maintaining a signature style that is unmistakably his own. In addition to his solo work\, Dweezil has collaborated with an impressively varied roster of artists\, including Edward Van Halen\, Deep Purple\, Lisa Loeb\, Chick Corea\, Herbie Hancock and Steve Vai\, among others. \nIn 2020\, Dweezil further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in the industry by completing construction on “Hikari\,” a state-of-the-art multimedia studio. As a sought-after audio mix engineer\, he showcased his expertise by crafting the stereo and Atmos mixes for the 50th anniversary re-release of Deep Purple’s legendary album “Machine Head” in 2024\, cementing his status as a unique voice in sound engineering. \nBeyond his artistic pursuits\, Dweezil is deeply passionate about music education. He frequently shares his knowledge and expertise by teaching guitar\, both through his own music camp\, “Dweezilla\,” and online lessons. His collaborative spirit has led him to work with a diverse array of musicians all while honoring the legacy of his father\, Frank Zappa. \nIn all his endeavors\, Dweezil remains committed to upholding integrity and pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity. As he continues to innovate and inspire\, Dweezil Zappa stands as a true luminary in the world of music and beyond.

SUMMARY:Music in the Atrium: Celebrate Mother Earth with Johnny Fireseed
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Atrium \nIncluded with admission\nSalem residents and workers always get free admission. \nThis program will contribute to the sound in the Atrium. If you would like to borrow noise canceling headphones\, please pick up a KultureCity bag at the coatroom. \nABOVE IMAGE: Illustrations by Chris Cyr. \nThis month\, our Music in the Atrium series celebrates Planet Earth with live performances by Johnny Fireseed. A project of Framingham-based Fireseed Arts Studios\, lead by artist and musician Patiño Vázquez in collaboration with local musicians and craftspeople\, Johnny Fireseed uses instruments made entirely from upcycled trash and repurposed items to perform original music with an upbeat eco message. The band’s inspiring sound aims to spread a message of joy\, fun and new ways of thinking about consumption and waste far and wide. \nVázquez will be showcasing instruments made from locally harvested trash and live looping to create ambient soundscapes. Come hear high-end electric guitars made from old kitchen countertops and drums fashioned from ventilation ducts and popcorn tins in an aesthetic that’s “part Victorian Steampunk with elements of mystic meditations in heart-opening layers of rhythms and harmonies.” Building loops and then improvising over the loops gives the listener a feel for the looks and sound characteristics of each instrument. Audience members are often invited to join in the fun! \nMusic in the Atrium is PEM’s live concert series that features local and visiting performers from a variety of musical traditions and styles. Concerts take place on select Sundays. Explore upcoming shows at pem.org/events.
