Born in 1986 in Gaborone\, Botswana – where many artists from South Africa\, including his father\, musician Steve Dyer\, were living in exile during apartheid – Dyer moved to South Africa as a child in 1993. Having musicians around in his early life gave Bokani the profound insight into the life of a musician and sparked a keen interested in pursuing music as a career. After taking up formal piano studies at age 14 for 4 years\, he was accepted intro the Jazz programme at the University of Cape Town where he graduated in 2008 with an Honours degree in Performance and Composition with distinction. He is a part of The Bokani Dyer Trio – Bokani Dyer (piano)\, Romy Brauteseth (bass) and Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums). Bokani has recorded three jazz albums to critical acclaim. \nAlongside his jazz career\, Bokani also explores various other genres including electronic music\, classical piano\, and salsa. These various influences have made him aware of the versatility of the piano as an instrument. ‘In my own compositions\, I have consciously allowed all of the music which I have encountered to flow into my music to create a new idea of “world music” where there is music with no borders\,’ he explains. This led to an interest in exploring traditional styles of music from Africa\, particularly percussion rhythms.

Featuring artist books\, altered books\, and book illustration\, “Boundless” showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling\, visual poetry\, personal narratives\, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang\, twist\, stand\, open like advent calendars\, or defy conventional forms altogether. \nThe exhibition presents a wide array of techniques\, including letterpress\, etching\, monoprint\, painting\, photography\, and mixed media. Featuring artist books\, altered books\, and book illustration\, “Boundless” showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling\, visual poetry\, personal narratives\, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang\, twist\, stand\, open like advent calendars\, or defy conventional forms altogether. \nThe exhibition presents a wide array of techniques\, including letterpress\, etching\, monoprint\, painting\, photography\, and mixed media. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 28\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nCarlson Education Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $5\nRegistration required as space is limited \nUp to the early 20th century\, schooners were the workhorses of the Gloucester fisheries under sail. But visitors to the Cape Ann Museum have often asked\, “What exactly is a Schooner?” This presentation will provide an easy-to-remember definition of a schooner and will show its evolution from a small inshore fishing boat to an extreme racing type. Ship models from the Museum’s collection and photos will illustrate the presentation. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Janice Brand\nExhibit Dates: August 21 – September 14\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, August 21\, 4-7 pm\nClosing Reception: Sunday\, September 14\, 2-5pm\nGallery Hours: Sunday & Monday\, 12-5pm; Thursday – Saturday\, 12-7pm \nRephrasing\, an exhibition curated by Janice Brand\, encompasses the mixed-media work of Shira Karman\, Tobi Klein\, Helen Tory\, and Patricia Wellenkamp\, who utilize the concepts of adaptation and revision. This show\, the fifth for the 2025 season at Cove Gallery\, takes into consideration memory\, family\, story-telling\, and definitely redefinition\, or rephrasing. \nShira Karman focuses on fragments that relate to some other time or place\, whether known or unknown. She is interested in how these fragments tell a story that she may know or hope to uncover. \nTobi Klein explores mono-printing\, collage\, and other mixed-media techniques\, taking inspiration from the continual shifting of light\, color\, and pattern of the granite quarries and the sea. She builds a story\, inviting viewers to peel back the layers and look below the surface. \nHelen Tory uses diverse media to express her connection with birds described in her father’s 1930s nature diaries. A variety of paint\, mark-making\, torn papers\, and string elicit each bird’s particular characteristics. \nPatricia Wellenkamp uses a series of carved linoleum blocks to print on cotton and other fabrics. She incorporates embroidery\, paper\, and other elements to add ornamentation and complexity to images that might come from an ancestor’s dress\, dahlias in her garden or imagined landscapes.
