The basics of how colors and paint interact on the substrate\, as well as its application to real life will be included. Still life painting will be used to apply what students have learned from the course into their own artwork. Color schemes\, how colors react to each other\, and how colors evoke emotions will be taught. Students will walk away with a better understanding of how to mix paint colors\, what is in their paint\, find colors in real life\, and how to create a cohesive color palette. This class is designed to be beginner friendly\, and welcome to all types of artists.

DESCRIPTION:The “King of Telluride” delivers Rockport the high-energy\, jazz and rock-infused newgrass that earned him an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award. \nSam Bush\, a pioneering force in progressive bluegrass\, has spent over five decades redefining the genre with his signature mandolin style and genre-blending approach. Born in Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, he was immersed in music from an early age\, influenced by his father’s fiddle playing and inspired by artists like Bill Monroe and the Osborne Brothers. By his teens\, Bush had already won a three national championships in the junior division of the National Oldtime Fiddler’s Contest and recorded his first album\, Poor Richard’s Almanac. \nIn 1966\, at just 18\, he turned down an offer to join country star Roy Acuff’s band\, choosing instead to follow a more experimental path. He joined the Bluegrass Alliance in 1969\, where he first played with future collaborators. The following year\, Bush and his bandmates formed New Grass Revival\, igniting a revolution in bluegrass by incorporating elements of rock\, jazz\, reggae\, and improvisation. Despite initial resistance from traditionalists\, the band gained a devoted following\, toured with Leon Russell\, and became a staple of the festival circuit. Bush’s innovative mandolin technique and boundary-pushing compositions helped solidify New Grass Revival’s legacy through the 1970s and 1980s. \nBush moved on from the band in 1989 after two decades\, spending the next several years collaborating with Emmylou Harris’ Nash Ramblers and later Lyle Lovett. He earned multiple International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Mandolin Player of the Year awards and reconnected with Béla Fleck to tour with the Flecktones. In 1995\, he embarked on a solo career\, releasing acclaimed albums such as Glamour & Grits (1996) and Laps in Seven (2006)\, showcasing his signature mix of bluegrass\, jam-band energy\, and instrumental mastery. \nA festival favorite\, Bush became a regular at Telluride\, earning the title “King of Telluride” for his electrifying performances. His influence spans generations\, inspiring artists like Punch Brothers\, Steep Canyon Rangers\, and Greensky Bluegrass. His contributions to music were recognized in 2009 when he received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist.

DESCRIPTION:Alla Prima Painting with Todd Bonita\nSaturday\, July 19th\, 10:00am–5:00pm | Upstairs or Outside\n$75 for NAA members / $95 non-members\n“Alla Prima” is a technique in which a painting is completed in one session\, wet into wet. This direct method lends itself to thickly applied impasto paint quality and expressive brush work. This class is suitable for beginners or for those who have some experience but are looking for a simple and focussed understanding of the nuts and bolts of oil painting. It is also ideal for Plein air painters who are looking to build upon their skill set. Our class begins with a demo\, where we will introduce the Impressionist philosophy of completing a painting in three acts; (1) The Lay in\, (2) Modification layer and (3) Art infusion layer. Individual steps from Drawing\, Design\, Value\, Color and Creative oil painting techniques and tools will be discussed and demonstrated. With an understanding of these principles\, students will be better equipped to meet the challenges of Alla Prima painting\, and thereby\, better able to express themselves as artist.

The brainchild of ace Boston guitarists Ryan Taylor and Johnny Trama\, this collective\, more than a mere homage\, harness the Allman Brothers tradition as a vehicle to bring a unique and exciting experience every night. \nMatt Zeiner began his professional music career touring with Matt “Guitar” Murphy\, who exposed him to a fusion of blues and jazz. His career took a significant turn in 2000 when Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band recruited him as a keyboardist and vocalist\, leading to a fruitful collaboration and tour. Zeiner’s own songwriting flourished during this time\, contributing notably to the band’s repertoire. After four years touring\, he returned home\, focused on original material\, and formed his own band. They achieved recognition with their 2007 release\, “Live on a Summer Night\,” and continued to evolve through collaborations with artists like Melvin Sparks and Jeff Pevar. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Today\, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches\, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members\, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag\, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe. He asks how the community can continue to grow and more broadly\, what it means to be Indigenous. \nAbout the Book \nIn Nothing More of This Land\, Lee weaves his family story into a panoramic narrative of Indigenous life around the world. He takes us from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the icy Alaskan tundra\, the smoky forests of Northern California to the halls of the United Nations and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. The Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter-composer has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five\, multiple solo albums\, and numerous collaborative records. \nHis latest pop solo album was released in 2023 to rave reviews and sold-out performances. He released his first Christmas album in 2024 and last Fall recorded a LIVE album slated for release in 2025 with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Kennedy Center in DC where he served for eight years as the first Artistic Advisor to the NSO. \nHe currently tours as a pop artist\, while also performing with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras. \nA New York Times Best Selling author and former podcast host\, Ben is also working on new compositions for film\, tv and theatre. He also frequently guest stars in films and TV. \nIn 2022\, Ben launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys For Kids\,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that offer free or affordable piano lessons to school-age children from economically-disadvantaged households. And he continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education on the national level as a member of Americans For The Arts and the Arts Action Fund.

Learn to distinguish prevalent styles\, note changes that have occurred over time\, and determine what questions to ask about historic houses. \nThis approximately 90-minute walk allows ample time to walk and talk with your knowledgeable guide and other participants. Wharf Studio\, Gloucester reflects one such visit in 1958. Blaine was educated in representational\, realist\, and abstract methods of painting\, and was heavily influenced by the instruction of Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann (1880-1966). \nYou are invited to join us on Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed.
