SUMMARY:Vienna Boys Choir
DESCRIPTION:The angelic-voiced musicians of the Vienna Boys Choir celebrate the magic of the holiday season with a delightful program of Austrian folk songs\, classical masterpieces\, Christmas hymns\, and holiday carols. For six centuries\, these young cultural ambassadors have been adored the world over for their wide range of repertoire\, purity of tone\, and generosity of musical spirit. The Vienna Boys Choir is one of the most celebrated and historic choirs in the world. Boys have sung at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel since at least 1296\, and in 1498 Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I formally established a Court Chapel in Vienna\, specifying that boys be included among its singers. This act laid the foundation for the Vienna Boys Choir\, whose early members traveled with the imperial court to perform at coronations\, weddings\, state ceremonies\, and other important occasions throughout the Holy Roman Empire. Over the centuries\, the Viennese court attracted many of Europe’s greatest musical figures\, including Heinrich Isaac\, Johann Joseph Fux\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, and Anton Bruckner. Joseph Haydn\, Michael Haydn\, and Franz Schubert all sang as boys with the choir\, linking the ensemble directly to some of the most important names in classical music history. Today\, the Vienna Boys Choir is a private\, nonprofit organization and an entire educational campus devoted to choral training. Its schools serve 330 boys and girls ages six to nineteen\, all of whom receive individual voice lessons and sing in one of the campus choirs. In addition to the four internationally touring boys’ choirs\, the institution includes the Vienna Girls Choir\, Chorus Primus\, and Chorus Juventus. Its educational tradition is recognized by UNESCO as cultural heritage and is open to students regardless of origin\, gender\, nationality\, or religion. The 90 active boy choristers are divided among four touring choirs\, each performing under the name Vienna Boys Choir. Together\, they give nearly 300 concerts each year for audiences around the world. Since 1924\, the choirs have completed more than 1\,000 tours in 100 countries and performed more than 29\,000 concerts. In Vienna\, the choirs continue their historic role by singing Sunday Mass in the Imperial Chapel with members of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera men’s chorus. They also appear regularly in major symphonic concerts\, at the Salzburg Festival\, and with the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert. In 2023\, the Choir celebrated its 525th anniversary\, marked by major recording and publishing projects. In 2024\, the Vienna Boys Choir and Vienna Girls Choir jointly received the European Culture Award. Erasmus Baumgartner was appointed Artistic Director in 2023.

SUMMARY:The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion
DESCRIPTION:November 6–22\, 2026\nFriday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nOpening reception: NOVEMBER 7\, 4-6 PM\nRocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930 \nGloucester\, MA — The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion brings together artists from the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship for an exhibition celebrating three years of artistic exploration\, collaboration\, and engagement with one of New England’s most significant coastal landscapes. \nThe exhibition features work by artists who have participated in the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, a program created to support artists in developing new projects inspired by the Great Marsh\, its natural and man-made history and significance\, as well as its beauty and immediate fragility. Over the past three years\, 22 artists have been selected as Great Marsh Artist Fellows and have dedicated themselves to creating 24 projects that connect art\, ecology\, history\, science\, and community. Some have been completed and presented to the community\, others are still underway. \nThe exhibition marks an important milestone in a partnership that began with The Great Marsh Concert in 2023\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The concert brought artists and members of the Great Marsh community together around a shared interest in the landscape and its future. That initial collaboration led to the formation of the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, which provides $2\,000 grants to artists to develop projects that premiere at organizations and institutions connected to the Great Marsh. \nThe fellowship has grown into a network of artists and organizational partners extending across the Great Marsh region. Over the past three years\, fellows have developed and presented projects with organizations including Essex Heritage\, Greenbelt\, Essex County’s Land Trust\, Mass Audubon\, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge\, The Trustees of Reservations\, TownGreen\, Essex National Heritage Area\, Historic New England\, Massachusetts Bay National Estuary Program\, Merrimack Valley Planning Commission\, Plum Island Ecosystems LTER at the Marine Biological Laboratory\, and the Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts and Bass Institute at The Governor’s Academy. The Great Marsh Artists Fellowship and this exhibition are funded in part by the Kathleen Van Demark Fund for the Great Marsh. \nRather than asking artists simply to interpret the marsh\, the fellowship invites them to spend time with the places\, people\, histories\, species\, and questions that make up this extraordinary landscape. The resulting projects have taken many forms\, demonstrating the range of ways artists can engage with a living ecosystem. \n“The Great Marsh Starts Here!” reflects both the geography and the philosophy of the exhibition. The Great Marsh begins here\, but it also extends outward—through waterways\, wildlife\, communities\, working landscapes\, and the many people who care for and experience it. The exhibition offers a chance to see the Great Marsh through the eyes of artists who have spent time observing\, listening\, researching\, imagining\, and creating in relationship to the landscape. \nArtists and Works\nThe exhibition brings together work by 18 of the 22 Great Marsh Artists Fellows including Resa Blatman\, Gail Boyajian\, Marcia Ciro\, Robert J. Bradshaw\, Michele Brody\, Anne Eder\, Karen Futral\, Isaac Grenader\, Robert Honstein\, Jenn Houle\, Amy Kaczur\, Andrea LeBlanc\, Susan Quateman\, Katie Pustizzi\, Norah Solorzano\, Erika Sutter\, and Alex Young. \nThe work presented moves across artistic disciplines and mediums—from painting\, photography\, and sculpture to video\, book art\, music\, animation\, and dance—revealing the many ways a living landscape can be seen\, experienced\, interpreted\, and expressed. \nAbout the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\nThe Great Marsh Artists Fellowship was established following the 2023 Great Marsh Concert\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The fellowship provides $2\,000 grants to artists to create projects inspired by the Great Marsh and to develop those projects in partnership with organizations throughout the region. \nThe program recognizes artists as important observers\, interpreters\, storytellers\, and participants in the life of a landscape. By placing artists in conversation with environmental organizations\, historic sites\, conservation groups\, scientists\, educators\, and local communities\, the fellowship creates opportunities for new forms of public engagement with the Great Marsh. \nSince its creation\, the fellowship has supported 22 artists and 24 projects\, with projects ranging across visual art\, music\, film\, dance\, performance\, writing\, interdisciplinary practice\, and community engagement. \nThe Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion continues that work by bringing the artists together in one place and inviting audiences to experience the Great Marsh not as a single subject\, but as a complex and interconnected living landscape. \nExhibition Dates: November 6–22\, 2026\nOpening: November 7\, 4-6 PM\nGallery Hours: Friday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nLocation: Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930\nSome of the artwork will be for sale.\nAdmission: Donations gratefully accepted to the FREE exhibition. SUMMARY:Phil Vassar with Annie Brobst
DESCRIPTION:Phil Vassar’s life has always been steeped in music. Raised in a home where his father sang and his two sisters spun everything from Motown to West Coast harmonies\, his upbringing was a constant melody. The gospel and bluegrass influence of Lynchburg’s unique geography further shaped his sound\, while artists like Bruce Hornsby\, the Statler Brothers\, Billy Joel\, Elton John\, and Lionel Richie sculpted his melodic sensibilities. A true fan of rock legends like Queen\, Boston\, and David Bowie\, Vassar’s eclectic roots would lay the foundation for his remarkable career. This December show will include Phil Vassar originals\, along with some Holiday surprises. \nAnnie Brobst\nNew England Music Awards’ Overall Act of the Year\, Female Performer of the Year\, Country Artist of the Year\, and 2-time Song of the Year winner\, Brobst’s unique songwriting ranges from traditional country to pop country. With influences like Miranda Lambert\, Ashley McBryde and Jason Isbell; she adds a feminine touch to a bro-country sound and a powerful authenticity to storytelling through song.

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Winter: Tales of Wonder Through a Child’s Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Cantemus Chamber Chorus\, with 42 members from across the North Shore\, will present three concerts in December titled “Once Upon a Winter: Tales of Wonder Through a Child’s Eyes” in Newburyport\, Beverly\, and Gloucester. \nThe concerts feature Matthew Harris’s “A Child’s Christmas in Wales\,” based on the beloved holiday tale by Dylan Thomas. In addition\, the program will include a rich tapestry of contemporary and traditional repertoire from different cultures reflecting themes of wonder\, home\, darkness\, returning light\, and memory. The repertoire includes R. Murray Schafer’s “Snowforms; “Song for Yalda Night\,” an Iranian piece about the longest night of the year; the “Kang Ding Love Song\,” a Chinese folk song associated with the Winter Solstice; Morten Lauridsen’s “Lament for Pasiphaë;” traditional Hanukkah songs “Mi Y’Maleil” and “S’vivon;” Daniel Kantor’s “Night of Silence” and more. \nIn addition to accompanist Jeffrey Mead on piano\, joining Cantemus will be an 11-piece chamber orchestra and the Lexington Children’s Chorus (LCC)\, an auditioned choral ensemble for singers in grades 4-6. Founded by Artistic Director Allison Iannuzzi in 2019\, the LCC has collaborated with the Lexington Symphony Orchestra\, the Lexington High School Choral Program\, the Middlesex County Volunteer Fifes & Drums\, and other community arts partners. \nCantemus’ concerts will take place in Newburyport on Saturday\, December 5 at St. Paul’s Church\, 166 High St.; in Beverly on Saturday\, December 12 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church\, 4 Ocean St.; and in Gloucester on Sunday\, December 13 at the Unitarian Universalist Church\, 10 Church St. All three performances are at 4:00 p.m. \nCantemus’ Artistic Director Jason Iannuzzi said: “Across cultures and centuries\, the year’s longest nights have drawn people together to light candles\, gather around tables\, tell stories\, and sing.“ Though customs differ from place to place\, “they often spring from the same desires: for warmth\, for home\, for hope\, and for one another. This concert traces this shared story through the eyes of a child.” Allison Iannuzzi said\, “There is something truly special about experiencing the wonder of the winter season through a child’s eyes. The Children’s Chorus is delighted to collaborate with Cantemus to share music celebrating the beauty of winter traditions. We hope this music invites us all to rediscover the magic of the season and the shared experiences that unite us.” \nFor more information about the program and to purchase tickets\, visit www.cantemus.org/tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the door\, space permitting. \nCantemus gratefully acknowledges sponsorship support from Eastern Bank\, Institution for Savings\, and Rockland Trust\, and funding support from the Local Cultural Councils of Newbury\, Newburyport\, Rockport\, and West Newbury.
Recommended donations requested for certain programs to pay the performers.
