SUMMARY:Newburyport's Yankee Homecoming Week-long Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 1958\, Newburyport joined twenty-nine other New England communities in launching a celebration aimed at bringing people together. This week-long festival\, which has been held annually ever since\, strengthens the bonds of our community. Newburyport’s Yankee Homecoming is the longest continuously running festival that remains. \nThis year’s theme\, Tides of Time: Preserving the Past\, Charting the Future\, was inspired by the origins of Yankee Homecoming\, which began 66 years ago\, and the rich heritage of Newburyport that we celebrate each year. It also reflects the ongoing spirit of growth and change that this community has embraced. Events include a brewfest\, olde fashioned sunday\, waterfront concerts\, family day\, waterfront workouts\, heritage tours\, craft and art shows\, U.S. Coast Guard open house\, a parade and fireworks. For detailed event information\, click here. \n

SUMMARY:A Night of Comedy featuring Jimmie "JJ" Walker
DESCRIPTION:7/26/25\nReserved Seating $35-$40\nGA Standing $20.00\n7:00pm Doors\, 8:00pm Show\n21+\, Positive I.D. Required \nRising from the streets of New York’s ghettos to television superstardom\, Jimmie Walker personifies the great American success story. His catch phrase “Dyn-o-mite!” is part of the modern vernacular\, and he became such a major celebrity in the 1970’s that Time Magazine named him “Comedian of the Decade. \nSpotted by the casting director for Norman Lear of “All in the Family” fame\, Jimmie accepted a part in Lear’s new urban-styled comedy series\, “Good Times.” The role of the broadly strutting\, wisecracking J.J. Evans would launch him into television superstardom. “Dyn-o-mite!” was the phrase that made him famous nationwide. As “Good Times” enjoyed a six year run\, Walker’s fame grew exponentially. He was the first winner of the NAACP Image Award\, and won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He appeared on The Mac Davis Show\, Donny and Marie\, The John Davidson Show\, The Merv Griffin Show\, Dinah\, The Mike Douglas Show\, The Hollywood Squares\, and the Match Game. Clothing\, tee-shirts and even a talking doll that blurted out his signature catch phrase were soon on store shelves everywhere. \nBut despite all Jimmie’s success on the big and small screens\, stand-up comedy remains his first love. Walker currently tours the country 35 to 45 weeks a year performing live\, and guesting on game shows and late night television. In his spare time he writes scripts for TV and movies\, and continues to enjoy a comedy career now approaching five decades.

SUMMARY:Art is Love: A Talk and Concert at PEM
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Morse Auditorium \nIncluded with admission; preregistration encouraged. \nThis program includes moderately loud live music (amplified sound and percussion). \nJoin us for an afternoon of music and dialogue exploring the creative process in contemporary songwriting and performance. This conversation among original works by artists Muriel Teodori\, Kessada and Steve Nieve pays tribute to two of the most iconic figures in modern music: Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. \nThrough conversation\, live performance and personal storytelling\, the trio invites the audience to reflect on the art of creation\, the power of love and the eternal interplay between control and spontaneity in artistic expression. \nThe Talk: Three Angles on Artistic Creation \n1. What is the process of creation in art?\nMuriel Teodori explores the psychological and philosophical dimensions of creativity. \n2. Improvisation: Does it really exist?\nIs improvisation truly spontaneous\, or is it the result of years of structure and discipline? Steve Nieve draws from his classical training and rock experience to explore improvisation as both freedom and illusion. \n3. Production: Can it be Perfect? Control or Freedom?\nIn the age of digital tools and infinite takes\, Kessada questions the obsession with perfection. \nThe Concert: Art is Love \nOriginal songs are woven together with deeply personal interpretations of works by Tom Waits and Elvis Costello — two masters of storytelling through music. Each song\, each note\, is a continuation of the conversation.

Currently an eightpiece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon\, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. Singer DD Bastos brings her sweet and soulful vocals and adds another bright new dimension to the jazzy\, jump-blues musical roots. Bastos – Vocals DD is no stranger to the stage. She began singing in church at the age of 5 years old. Music has always been her passion. D.D. earned second chair in the All-Eastern Honors Ensemble representing Massachusetts which garnered her a scholarship. After college D.D. began performing with local bands throughout NE which led to the inception of her band DD & The Road Kings. Her work put her closely associated with the fraternity that is; Roomful of Blues\, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones\, The Broadcasters and the dozens of splinter groups who have branched off — shaping many other New England Blues bands. Certainly\, when three of them show up on D.D. and the Road Kings’ album Lover Bird\, which was well received by critics and fans alike\, there is a common thread that can be traced back to the ’60s Blues revival. D.D. is also a Choral Director in the public school system with 20+ years as a private music teacher. Her love of singing is what fuels her soulful and powerful performances. \nChris Vachon – Guitar Chris is a true multi-talent. His prowess as a guitar slinger is well documented\, and his strengths as a producer and songwriter grow from album to album. It was Rich’s interest in the swinging bands of the ’30s and ’40s that led Roomful to forge the distinctive sound that has become the band’s trademark. A man who can play both sides of the fence\, lyrically tender or blisteringly hot\, Rich has a big\, warm tone that is always jam-packed with feeling. His melodic inventiveness reflects the depth and breadth of his wide-ranging influences. Rich worked with various local and high- school bands before beginning his long-term relationship with Roomful. \nCraig Thomas – Baritone and Tenor Sax Craig was born in Washington DC and grew up in Maryland.
