While local scientists search for ways to help ocean species be more resilient to survive the rapidly changing marine environment\, these artists\, alert to the predicament\, are creating art with urgent messages for stewardship and action. \nThe exhibit coincides with a city-wide initiative STAND UP for Art & Science\, coordinated by Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute volunteers. \nWhile all the work in the exhibition has been created in response to human impact on the environment\, in addition\, several of the artists have been inspired by expeditions to the Arctic Circle and Greenland and residencies in marine laboratories on Cape Ann and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour featuring architectural treasures from PEM’s collection! The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. Assisted listening devices are available\, and tour guides will use microphones. \nYou can also follow our expert guides on Brick by Brick: Salem’s Hidden Architectural Stories for an in-depth look at architecture across downtown Salem\, from a millionaire’s mansion to a working-class sailor’s house.

DESCRIPTION:Incredible Zimbabwean master musician ‘Samaita’ Vitalis Botsa creates gorgeous\nwaves of sound with his mbira to connect the living with the ancestors. He says\,\n“I’m just the car\, it’s the spirits doing the driving\, making the music.” Botsa is\nvisiting from his village in Zimbabwe to tour playing duets with Erica Azim\,\npresenting a very traditional form of the sacred music played in Zimbabwe for\nover 1\,000 years. \nMbira is a musical instrument with metal keys plucked by two thumbs and one\nforefinger\, creating relaxing yet invigorating polyphony and polyrhythm.\nMusicians play interlocking parts.\, and the tradition includes vast improvisation.\nCentury after century\, the mbira instrument and its repertoire of classic songs\nhave been used in Zimbabwe to heal the sick and call family ancestors and\npowerful tribal guardian spirits to earth to help the living\, in night-long to weeklong\nceremonies. Every time the mbira is played\, it is considered a prayer to\nthe ancestors\, which will result in their protection of the living. \nCommunity ensemble\, Samanyanga Mbira Group will be playing outside the Recital Hall from 6:45 to 7:15 offering an up close look at the art of mbira. \nTickets \n$15 General\n$10 Seniors\nAdmission is free for all students with valid student ID\, under 18 \nThe concert takes place in the Recital Hall\, located on the ground floor of the Classroom Building\, 71 Loring Avenue. \nParking for this concert is available in the campus lot located directly across the street from 71 Loring Avenue.

The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. Grab a drink from the Outdoor Hard Cider Bar 11 am – 4 pm on Saturdays and 12-4 pm on Sundays. \nFood – Grab lunch at the food truck 11 am – 4 pm and snacks in the farm store 8 am – 6 pm. Guest food trucks and vendors pop-ups regularly. \nPlay – Parking\, play areas and barnyard are always free and open 8 am – 6 pm daily. Bee observatory\, chickens and goats arrive mid-May. \nWeather – Music\, food truck and hard cider bar are weather dependent. We make decisions 8 am on the day of in case weather shifts overnight. SUMMARY:Ropes Mansion Self-Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Built in 1727 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, Ropes Mansion is recognized as one of New England’s most significant historic structures. Fans of the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus will also recognize it as “Allison’s house” – though the inside of the home did not appear in the film. Instead\, its decorations and furnishings reflect a renovation by sisters Sarah\, Mary and Eliza Ropes in the 1890s. Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace with PEM Guides on hand to answer questions. \nVisits inside the mansion are $15 per person\, or $5 with the purchase of museum admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the Admissions desk inside the museum (161 Essex Street). Timed entries are at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour\, with only a limited number of people allowed in the house at a time. Visitors are requested to arrive 10 minutes before their entry time. The last entry of the day is at 3:15 pm. \nThe Ropes Mansion Garden is open to the public every day from dawn to dusk and is free to visit. Learn more about the house with PEM Walks.

DESCRIPTION:Navigating Art & Science\nCurated by Cynthia Roth\, Marge Rack\, and Ronda Faloon\nAugust 28 – October 13\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, September 14\, 4-6pm\nGallery Hours: Thursday-Sunday\, 12-5pm\nExhibiting Artists: Resa Blatman\, Daisy Braun\, Georgie Friedman\, Perri Lynch Howard\, Michelle Lougee\, Michelle Samour\, Jessica Straus\, and Christopher Volpe \nNavigating Art & Science featuring eight artists who are deeply involved in scientific inquiry and activism. While local scientists search for ways to help ocean species be more resilient to survive the rapidly changing marine environment\, these artists\, alert to the predicament\, are creating art with urgent messages for stewardship and action. \nThe exhibit coincides with a city-wide initiative STAND UP for Art & Science\, coordinated by Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute volunteers. \nWhile all the work in the exhibition has been created in response to human impact on the environment\, in addition\, several of the artists have been inspired by expeditions to the Arctic Circle and Greenland and residencies in marine laboratories on Cape Ann and beyond.
