The teams playing represent actual teams that played in New England during the 19th Century! \nGrass field seating: bring blankets and lawn chairs\nNo reserved seating\nWeather permitting\nThe Essex Base Ball Organization\, a non-profit “vintage” baseball group that plays baseball as it was played in the 19th century. We are based out of Newbury\, MA and have four teams in our organization the Essex Base Ball Club\, Lynn Live Oaks\, Lowell Base Ball Club\, and Newburyport Clamdiggers. One of our goals is to teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations. In addition to playing a full schedule of games every summer\, we run youth clinics in which we teach children the evolution of the game through hands on activities; we also give lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations.

DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. DESCRIPTION:Rocky Hill Meeting House is one of the best preserved examples of an original eighteenth-century meeting house interior. The fact that it has served no active congregation since the mid-nineteenth century led to its remarkable state of preservation. Eighteenth-century hardware remains intact throughout the building. The marbleized pulpit and pillars supporting the upper galleries still boast their original paint. \nTour involves standing\, walking\, and some stairs. Visitors with limited mobility may be able to enjoy a first floor tour of the meeting house and there is ample seating in the pews. Visitors can access a virtual tour from their own digital device onsite. The site is not equipped with ramps\, elevators\, or lifts and there is no air-conditioning. Service animals are welcome. We are happy to work with you to make your visit an enjoyable one and we encourage visitors with questions or requests to call ahead.

SUMMARY:Celtic Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Tonight\, we hear music from Ireland\, Quebec\, Germany and New England with an interweaving thread of Baroque Music and techniques. At a time when Telemann and Bach were composing fugues in continental Europe\, the Bardic harping tradition was alive and vibrant in Ireland resulting in a whole repertoire of Irish harp tunes that are now carried via pipes\, fiddles and a host of different instruments. We have the stunning sounds of Montreal-based violist Alexis Chartrand\, bringing his unique Gut-bow approach to traditional Quebec repertoire. In contrast\, the GRAMMY-nominated violinist Christina Day\, along with theorbist Michael Leopold\, performs one of Heinrich Biber’s Mystery Sonatas. Artistic Director Maeve Gilchrist will also bring in longtime collaborator Kyle Sanna and bassist Logan Coale to premier some new music for harp and electric guitar inspired by a Seamus Heaney translation of a middle English Poem on the mysticism of Hares! Don’t miss this richly imaginative evening of 17th century inspired exploration in a completely contemporary fashion!

DESCRIPTION:Billy Prine is a natural-born storyteller just like his late\, great brother John Prine was a natural-born songwriter. John was a great communicator of the human experience whittled down to the best words. His big\, little brother\, owner of a rich\, booming voice yet full of subtleness\, is one of the finest orators you’ll ever hear – also choosing just the right turn of phrase. \nDuring these concerts celebrating John’s life in song\, Billy will tell stories about or surrounding some of John’s most beloved songs before leading his band through his version of John’s timeless masterpieces. As an example\, fans will get to hear the first time John played his classic song “Paradise” for their father as the family sat around the kitchen table. \nSongs are stories\, novellas\, if you will\, and stories often become songs. It is only fitting that in the course of each show during this tour\, that Billy relates – as only he can – the stories that surround the songs of his dear brother John. \nWith special guest\, Scarlett Egan.

In addition to headlining in Boston clubs\, golf tournaments\, fundraisers\, roasts\, and other events\, Gilligan is a regular performer at the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas. \nAmong the national headliners he’s performed with are Pat Cooper\, the Amazing Johnathan\, Dom Irrera\, Dave Chappelle\, Brian Regan\, Gilbert Godfried\, and David Alan Grier\, as well as Boston-boys-gone-national Dane Cook\, Lenny Clarke\, Nick DiPaolo\, Joe Rogan\, John Pinette\, and Maine’s Bob Marley.
