SUMMARY:Maximus to Jack: Charles Olson & John Hays Hammond Jr.
DESCRIPTION:September 3\nProgram:\n5:30 – 6:00 pm: Light Refreshments & Networking\n6:00 – 7:00 pm: Presentation\n7:00- 7:15 pm: Conclusion & Q&A.\nhttps://bit.ly/MaximustoJack \nOn the night of September 3rd\, 1960\, John Hays Hammond Jr. hosted a reading by the poetCharles Olson at Hammond Castle Museum… \nThis poster was originally done for that event\, by the inventor’s late-life partner Harry Martin\, who introduced Hammond—once called the “Electronic Sorcerer”—to Olson: the self-styled “Archeologist of Morning.” The two men’s friendship would be short-lived and tempestuous. \n65 years later\, join Hammond Castle Museum in marking the anniversary of Olson’s reading and for the first time exploring the dramatic relationship between our founder and the luminary Maximus poet—two colossal figures who helped shape the community of Gloucester as we\nknow it today. \nThrough never-before-seen archival correspondence and a close reading of often overlooked Olson poems that address Hammond and the avant-garde 1960s literary and artistic circle surrounding the Museum directly\, Director of Visitor Services and Education Caleb McMurphy\nwill revive a near-forgotten chapter of local history and shed new light on two of the city’s most\ninteresting citizens.

SUMMARY:The Sweet Remains
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed folk-rock trio\, which has amassed more than 65 million Spotify streams\, returns to touring in support of their highly anticipated fifth studio album\, Embers—a mesmerizing collection of acoustic-driven\, three-part harmonies. \nA rare independent success\, The Sweet Remains have surpassed 65 million streams on Spotify\, earning a devoted global following. \nFormed by Rich Price (Burlington\, VT)\, Greg Naughton (NYC)\, and Brian Chartrand (Phoenix\, AZ)\, The Sweet Remains is driven by three accomplished singer-songwriters. Rich Price\, whose song I’m On My Way was featured on the multi-platinum Shrek 2 soundtrack\, has released multiple solo albums and written for film and TV. Early in his career\, he was signed to RCA and later Geffen Records. Greg Naughton earned acclaim for his debut indie release\, Demagogue & The Sun Songs\, praised by Performing Songwriter Magazine as “a magnetic writer and performer.” That album was co-produced by the late Grammy-winning artist Phoebe Snow. Greg’s work extends beyond music—he co-wrote and directed The Independents\, inspired by the band’s real-life experiences\, and often collaborates with his wife\, Tony-winner Kelli O’Hara. Brian Chartrand\, a celebrated Phoenix-based songwriter\, has released numerous solo albums and tours internationally\, including as the creator of Live From Laurel Canyon\, a critically acclaimed tribute to folk-rock legends like CSN\, Neil Young\, and Joni Mitchell. \nWith Embers\, The Sweet Remains continue their legacy\, following in the footsteps of their beloved catalog: Music Fills The Spaces (2020)\, Night Songs (2015)\, North & Prospect (2012)\, and Laurel & Sunset (2008).

SUMMARY:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner and the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. Commanding commissions comparable to leading male artists\, Kussner stands among the “first wave” of prominent women artists—yet her rise also included lawsuits\, scandals\, and sudden turns\, including a surprise marriage to Charles du Pont Coudert. \nDrawing from her book The Miniature Painter Revealed\, Langone presents 70 images\, including color reproductions of Kussner’s rare surviving works\, and explores how the careers of Kussner and Laura Coombs Hills intersected within the elite world of Gilded Age portraiture—offering a local lens for Newburyport audiences.
