DESCRIPTION:Afternoon Enrichment for Adults:\nThe underground railroad in essex county \nIn the 19th century\, a secret network helping those escaping slavery\, known as the Underground Railroad\, ran north along the coast from Boston through Lynn and Marblehead to Salem\, where it split into three trails: One through Danvers\, Andover\, Lawrence\, and across the New Hampshire line; another by way of Danvers\, Georgetown\, and Haverhill. The third route went through Beverly\, where Dr. Ingalls Kittredge tirelessly managed the transportation of fugitives. \nFrom Beverly\, the freedom seekers were transported to the zealous anti-slavery workers in Ipswich\, continuing to Newbury\, Newburyport\, West Newbury\, and Amesbury\, and then escorted into New Hampshire. \nFrom 1831 to 1865\, William Lloyd Garrison published The Liberator\, which was dedicated to the immediate abolition of slavery. A native of Newburyport\, he founded the influential American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Men’s and women’s anti-slavery societies formed in many of the towns of the North Shore\, a hotbed of the anti-slavery movement. \nAfternoon Enrichment Series • Included with general museum admission • Ages: Adults • Registration not required \nAbout Gordon Harris:\nGordon Harris grew up in Mississippi and has lived in Massachusetts since graduating from Millsaps College in 1971. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art offers Intro to Spoon Carving with Eric Goodson
DESCRIPTION:Spoons are central tools in the human experience; they may very well be the first and last tools we use in this life. They also make great projects for beginner carvers\, with their convex and concave surfaces and changing grain direction. In this course\, students will learn about wood selection\, grain orientation\, spoon design and ergonomics\, and a wide variety of special knife grips (for both slöjd and hook knives) that make carving fast\, efficient\, and safe. Attention will also be paid to stretches and massage that help relieve hand fatigue. Finally\, students will also discuss finishing oils\, paints\, and decorative techniques like chip carving and kolrosing. Loaner tools will be available\, though if students have their own carving tools\, they should bring them. Slöjd knives (Mora 106\, 120\, and 164) will also be for sale. All students will receive a spoon template that they can take home to make more! No experience necessary\, and as long as you can easily open a jar of spaghetti sauce\, you have sufficient hand strength.

These programs will explore a diverse range of subjects that connect to the unique history and character of Salem\, Massachusetts. Join us for the launch of “Salem as Muse” with George Schwartz\, Curator-at-Large\, who will discuss his book Collecting the Globe. \nAs the oldest continually operating and collecting museum in the country\, PEM has seen more than two centuries of evolution and innovation since its founding in 1799. Collecting the Globe offers a window into the early days of the museum: “To escape the ‘prosaic streets’ of Salem\, Massachusetts\, in the first half of the 19th century\, local residents and travelers from across the United States and the globe came to the East India Marine Society Museum (1799–1876). Located on the town’s main thoroughfare\, Essex Street\, the museum transported individuals to another world…” \n“It is unheard of to still have the original archival material\, and the collection\, and the permanent home for an early American institution\,” says Schwartz. “You have to use the term ‘unique\,’ because we are the only one.” A comprehensive history offering fresh perspectives on museums and how they helped shape our national identity\, Collecting the Globe explores collecting\, exhibiting and interpreting a diversity of international objects and art in early America. Schwartz\, co-curator of the new installation in the East India Marine Society’s first permanent home\, East India Marine Hall\, aims to capture the dynamic history of one of the most important American museums during a pivotal time when Salem was a leading port and launching point for global trade. \nExplore the hundreds of fascinating objects on view in East India Marine Hall before or after the talk.

No previous experience is necessary.\n​\nBEGINNER 1B: Tuesdays 7:40 Pm or Thursdays\, 6:20 PM\nThis class builds directly on the Beginner 1A series and is ideal for dancers who have learned the fundamentals and are ready to gain confidence and consistency. There will also be a FOCUS on the ‘Leads’ for proper footwork and leading techniques\, to become a better leader\, needed to lead more advance moves in the future. You’ll continue developing On 2 timing\, strengthen partner connection\, and expand on basic patterns including turns and cross-body lead variations with proper techniques. The focus is on smoother transitions\, musicality\, and dancing with greater ease and control. Completion of the Beginner 1A class is required before enrolling in this class. \nADVANCED BEGINNER 1C: Thursdays (7:30)\nThis class is designed for dancers who already know the basics and are ready to refine and gain salsa skills. A strangely lovable villain\, Richard easily wins his audience over\, leaving us to question who we are truly rooting for. However\, a kingdom built on lies and ruthless ambition is destined to crumble. Richard entrances the audience with his wit\, cunning manipulation of language\, and vicious determination—qualities that once won his audience\, ultimately lead to his rapid downfall. \nPerforming from April 9th-12th and 16th-19th\, all performances are at The Natti-Willsky Performance Center\, Home of Gloucester Stage Company\, 267 East Main Street\, Gloucester.
