SUMMARY:A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury
DESCRIPTION:In 1690\, an enslaved man called James escaped from the Dole household in pursuit of his freedom. When captured\, James revealed plans for what could have been the largest organized revolt in seventeenth-century New England led by enslaved and indentured people. A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury will explore the hidden history of the Dole-Little House and the surrounding landscape. At least a dozen people were enslaved by Richard Dole on this site prior to the construction of the current Dole-Little House. This talk examines historical records about this case while exploring the Lower Green\, First Settlers monument\, the Parker (Quascacunquen) River\, and the grounds of Dole-Little House. \nDr. Tricia Peone\, project director for New England’s Hidden Histories at the Congregational Library & Archives in Boston\, and former research scholar for Historic New England’s Recovering New England’s Voices project\, presents this talk and landscape tour.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Historic Dogtown\, A Walk Back in Time
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 21\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nBabson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930 \n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThe Historic Dogtown walking tour is almost three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. The terrain is up and down throughout\, over gentle hills. Hiking attire and closed footwear advised; walking poles are useful. Bring water and insect repellent\, as they are not supplied. *This tour is not suitable if you have mobility concerns. \nPhoto Credit: Marsden Hartley (1877-1943). SUMMARY:The 1775 Quebec Expedition from Newburyport: Following Their Footsteps
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers. He visited the same stopping points\, slogged through the same mud\, and got bitten by the descendents of the mosquitoes of that era. \nWe’ll hear the stories of Newburyporters like Caleb Haskell\, Rev Samuel Spring\, Jeremiah Wheelwright and others\, describing their experiences during that ill-fated journey to liberate Quebec. \nJoin us to hear about this exciting trek through the Maine backwoods\, in a way that presents it as a travelogue of a trip that you\, too\, can do – highlighting historical locations\, museums\, and displays to visit first hand. \nCentral Congregation Church14 Titcomb StreetNewburyport\, MA 01950at 3:00 pm

SUMMARY:The Far Out & Residual Groove
DESCRIPTION:Reserved Rail Seats $25 + $6.95 service fee\nGA Standing $15 + $6.95 service fee\n$30/$20 + $6.95 service fee day of show\n7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n18+\, Positive I.D. Required. \nThe Far Out is a funk and soul pop band from Boston\, Massachusetts. The six powerhouse musicians have been playing together since they were kids – learning and growing through shared experiences in jazz\, theatre\, a cappella\, and orchestra. Now\, The “New Act of the Year” recipient at the New England Music Awards engage their audiences with lush vocals and groovy horn lines\, supported by undeniable chemistry and raw star quality. Their goal is to include audiences in their infectious joy and spread the love of funk and soul music. \nTaking after the likes of Fleetwood Mac\, Eagles\, and Earth\, Wind & Fire\, The Far Out is stacked with multiple lead singers and songwriters. Their genre is a cohesion of their individual tastes and influences\, brought together by a shared aim to entertain and inspire. You’ll often catch the group of multi-instrumentalists switching roles during their shows — passing guitars around\, moving from lead vocals to horn section\, or stealing a moment behind the keys. \nSince their formation in summer ‘21\, TFO has quickly become a notable part of the Greater Boston music community. The band is involved with local organizations such as Lungstrong\, Ipswich Caring\, Team Haverhill\, the Pelican Intervention Fund\, and Friends of Ipswich Elementary Schools (FRIES). The group’s debut EP — self-titled\, The Far Out — was named Indie Boulevard’s Best EP of 2023. In 2024\, they followed up the award-winning EP with two explosive singles\, “See Red (You’re Dead)” and “Packed to Go.” Their latest\, “Funkadelic Gas\,” is a total groove-fest and a celebration of the group’s chemistry and musicianship. \nhttps://thefarout.band \nHailing from Norwalk\, Connecticut\, Residual Groove has quickly earned a reputation for marrying high-octane jam-rock energy with disciplined musicianship. Founded by brothers Kiran Edwards (keys / vocals) and Previn Edwards (guitar / vocals)\, the quintet now features the melodic low-end wizardry of Ryan Berry on bass\, alongside the explosive Henry Thomas (drums) and percussive ace Garrett Halstead. Ryan’s arrival in 2025 has deepened the band’s pocket and opened new improvisational avenues\, adding a fresh\, muscular dimension to their sound. \nResidual Groove’s 2024 debut album In Dream Time drew praise from peers and tastemakers across the jam scene for its forward-thinking arrangements and fearless sonic exploration. Members of Goose\, Eggy\, and Neighbor have publicly lauded the record’s inventive blend of kaleidoscopic keyboards\, searing guitar lines\, and airtight rhythm work. \nOnstage\, the band treats every composition as a launchpad\, spinning structured songs into adventurous yet purposeful improvisations that keep crowds guessing—and dancing. That chemistry has landed them support slots with scene heavyweights Andy Frasco\, Dogs in a Pile\, Karina Rykman\, Vasudo\, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong\, Melt\, and more. Each performance reaffirms Residual Groove’s knack for turning a set list into a narrative journey\, seamlessly weaving one musical chapter into the next. \nWith a reinforced lineup\, an acclaimed debut under their belt\, and a relentless drive to push the boundaries of modern jam-rock\, Residual Groove is staking their claim as one of the Northeast’s most compelling live acts—one ecstatic\, exploratory show at a time.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Ed & Jo Hopper’s Houses\, Views from Portuguese Hill
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 27\, 2025\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nExplore the specific sites in the area of Gloucester known as Portuguese Hill depicted by renowned American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are sites painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968)\, Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right\, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. Learn how this hillside neighborhood that the Hoppers travelled together inspired their artwork\, as well as the role the area plays in Gloucester history. \nIf you have enjoyed one of our Hopper’s Houses Downtown tours\, the Portuguese Hill tour takes you to another side of the city to see different views. It’s well worth the experience! \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours towards Portuguese Hill and back to downtown Gloucester. This walking tour includes steep stairs and a length of the hill. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Tours are light rain or shine. \nPhoto Credit: CAM docent leading walking tour\, CAM staff photo.
