The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. Some of this vibrancy emerges through palette and medium; others through a sense of whimsy or the handmade.” This exhibition celebrates artistic excellence and innovation across a wide range of media and subjects. By featuring more work from fewer artists\, Member Showcase invites viewers to engage more deeply with each artist’s vision and process.

SUMMARY:Wheelock Variations in Concert at Peabody Essex Museum
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Alexander Lassa and composer Charles Shadle present Wheelock Variations: The Choctaw Hymn Tradition in a Contemporary Context\, a concert that celebrates both musicians’ tribal identity as enrolled members of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. \nThe central work on the program is Shadle’s Wheelock Variations\, a 25-minute work for solo guitar\, commissioned by Lassa\, that is based on “Vba Isht Taloa 139” (Choctaw Hymn 139). The title of Wheelock Variations references the historic Wheelock Academy near Millerton Oklahoma/Choctaw Nation\, and the nearby Wheelock Church. Both bear the name of Eleazar Wheelock (1711–1779)\, Congregational minister and founder of Dartmouth college\, and an important advocate for the education of Native American people. Wheelock Academy was established by the respected early missionary to the Choctaws\, Alfred Wright (1788-1853)\, who founded the school in 1832. He and his congregation built the stone Wheelock Church in 1845–46. Very much in the severe style of the New England country meeting house\, it is the oldest church building in Oklahoma. It has recently been returned to the ownership of the Choctaw Nation. \nIn part\, Wheelock Variations memorializes this event\, while also engaging\, through musical means\, with the complex history of the place and its people. Wheelock Variations can be heard as an act of cultural preservation that understands that the past\, in order to stay viable\, must be continually reimagined\, so that it remains accessible to both Choctaw and non-Choctaw listeners.

SUMMARY:Hammers on Stone: The Granite Industry on Cape Ann
DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy\, providing work for men from across New England and around the world\, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries\, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale\, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. \nDrawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry\, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013)\, Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting\, cutting\, and finishing stone\, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. You’ll learn some of the history of maple sugaring as well as the science behind what makes maple sap run in our trees. The stroll concludes with a visit to our sugar shack where you will see firsthand how we turn the collected sap into our delicious Appleton maple syrup! \nBe sure to wear weather appropriate clothing and boots or shoes that are appropriate for hiking in potentially wet and muddy spots or over uneven hilly terrain. All Maple Strolls are weather permitting and will last approximately 1 hour\, walking much of that time. We welcome all ages; however\, information is geared towards those 10 and up. The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. In addition to their large-scale murals\, six of the muralists created accompanying canvas works for display at PEM. \nThis project is made possible by PEM’s partnership and is an official part of Punto Urban Art Museum’s Salem 400+ offerings. Canvases by six of the muralists will be on display in PEM’s Main Atrium from November 15–December 2\, with potential remounts in 2026 as part of PEM’s Salem 400+ celebrations.

DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy\, providing work for men from across New England and around the world\, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries\, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale\, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. \nDrawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry\, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013)\, Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting\, cutting\, and finishing stone\, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents Abstracts!
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) announces the Abstracts! exhibition with a dazzling and thought-provoking collection of varied mediums\, textures\, colors and perceptions. This show takes place in the first-floor Sargent Gallery as well as the second-floor Hartson Gallery. \nAbstraction is many things. It is an adjective\, a noun and sometimes even a verb!\nIt invites the viewer to interpret form\, shape\, space and meaning. We entice you to explore your understanding of this particular form of art. \nThe exhibition coincides with Newburyport Art’s Featured Interest Group\, Abstract Artists of New England (AAGNE) show\, on view in the first floor Hills Gallery. \nOpening reception for both shows will be this Saturday\, November 8th from 4-6pm. The public is welcome to attend\, meet some of the exhibiting artists\, and enjoy light refreshments. \nAlso featured are Spotlight Artists\, Perry McIntosh and Christine Sanford. \nFounded in 1948\, Newburyport Art is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and to providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm\, Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm and is handicap accessible. SUMMARY:Sinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders & Literary Legends
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour featuring architectural treasures from PEM’s collection! The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. Assisted listening devices are available\, and tour guides will use microphones. \nYou can also follow our expert guides on Brick by Brick: Salem’s Hidden Architectural Stories for an in-depth look at architecture across downtown Salem\, from a millionaire’s mansion to a working-class sailor’s house.

SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Art Colony Member Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Member Showcase is Rocky Neck Art Colony’s final exhibition of the season featuring seven distinctive bodies of work by RNAC members – John Bassett\, Michelle Champion\, Eser Costanza\, Joanne Hurd\, Patricia Scialo\, Brian Murphy\, R. D. Murphy – selected by juror Shana Dumont Garr. This is exhibit is on display at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck through December 7. Gallery hours are Friday to Sunday\, from 12pm to 5pm. \nDumont Garr selected works that “possess remarkable vibrancy of color\, composition\, and method. Some of this vibrancy emerges through palette and medium; others through a sense of whimsy or the handmade.” This exhibition celebrates artistic excellence and innovation across a wide range of media and subjects. By featuring more work from fewer artists\, Member Showcase invites viewers to engage more deeply with each artist’s vision and process.
