SUMMARY:The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion
DESCRIPTION:November 6–22\, 2026\nFriday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nOpening reception: NOVEMBER 7\, 4-6 PM\nRocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930 \nGloucester\, MA — The Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion brings together artists from the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship for an exhibition celebrating three years of artistic exploration\, collaboration\, and engagement with one of New England’s most significant coastal landscapes. \nThe exhibition features work by artists who have participated in the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, a program created to support artists in developing new projects inspired by the Great Marsh\, its natural and man-made history and significance\, as well as its beauty and immediate fragility. Over the past three years\, 22 artists have been selected as Great Marsh Artist Fellows and have dedicated themselves to creating 24 projects that connect art\, ecology\, history\, science\, and community. Some have been completed and presented to the community\, others are still underway. \nThe exhibition marks an important milestone in a partnership that began with The Great Marsh Concert in 2023\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The concert brought artists and members of the Great Marsh community together around a shared interest in the landscape and its future. That initial collaboration led to the formation of the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\, which provides $2\,000 grants to artists to develop projects that premiere at organizations and institutions connected to the Great Marsh. \nThe fellowship has grown into a network of artists and organizational partners extending across the Great Marsh region. Over the past three years\, fellows have developed and presented projects with organizations including Essex Heritage\, Greenbelt\, Essex County’s Land Trust\, Mass Audubon\, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge\, The Trustees of Reservations\, TownGreen\, Essex National Heritage Area\, Historic New England\, Massachusetts Bay National Estuary Program\, Merrimack Valley Planning Commission\, Plum Island Ecosystems LTER at the Marine Biological Laboratory\, and the Wilkie Center for the Performing Arts and Bass Institute at The Governor’s Academy. The Great Marsh Artists Fellowship and this exhibition are funded in part by the Kathleen Van Demark Fund for the Great Marsh. \nRather than asking artists simply to interpret the marsh\, the fellowship invites them to spend time with the places\, people\, histories\, species\, and questions that make up this extraordinary landscape. The resulting projects have taken many forms\, demonstrating the range of ways artists can engage with a living ecosystem. \n“The Great Marsh Starts Here!” reflects both the geography and the philosophy of the exhibition. The Great Marsh begins here\, but it also extends outward—through waterways\, wildlife\, communities\, working landscapes\, and the many people who care for and experience it. The exhibition offers a chance to see the Great Marsh through the eyes of artists who have spent time observing\, listening\, researching\, imagining\, and creating in relationship to the landscape. \nArtists and Works\nThe exhibition brings together work by 18 of the 22 Great Marsh Artists Fellows including Resa Blatman\, Gail Boyajian\, Marcia Ciro\, Robert J. Bradshaw\, Michele Brody\, Anne Eder\, Karen Futral\, Isaac Grenader\, Robert Honstein\, Jenn Houle\, Amy Kaczur\, Andrea LeBlanc\, Susan Quateman\, Katie Pustizzi\, Norah Solorzano\, Erika Sutter\, and Alex Young. \nThe work presented moves across artistic disciplines and mediums—from painting\, photography\, and sculpture to video\, book art\, music\, animation\, and dance—revealing the many ways a living landscape can be seen\, experienced\, interpreted\, and expressed. \nAbout the Great Marsh Artists Fellowship\nThe Great Marsh Artists Fellowship was established following the 2023 Great Marsh Concert\, a collaboration between Manship Artists Residency and Artists for the Great Marsh. The fellowship provides $2\,000 grants to artists to create projects inspired by the Great Marsh and to develop those projects in partnership with organizations throughout the region. \nThe program recognizes artists as important observers\, interpreters\, storytellers\, and participants in the life of a landscape. By placing artists in conversation with environmental organizations\, historic sites\, conservation groups\, scientists\, educators\, and local communities\, the fellowship creates opportunities for new forms of public engagement with the Great Marsh. \nSince its creation\, the fellowship has supported 22 artists and 24 projects\, with projects ranging across visual art\, music\, film\, dance\, performance\, writing\, interdisciplinary practice\, and community engagement. \nThe Great Marsh Starts Here! A Living Landscape in Motion continues that work by bringing the artists together in one place and inviting audiences to experience the Great Marsh not as a single subject\, but as a complex and interconnected living landscape. \nExhibition Dates: November 6–22\, 2026\nOpening: November 7\, 4-6 PM\nGallery Hours: Friday–Sunday\, noon–5 p.m.\nLocation: Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester MA 01930\nSome of the artwork will be for sale.\nAdmission: Donations gratefully accepted to the FREE exhibition. Recommended donations requested for certain programs to pay the performers. Register to attend on exhibition page of Manship website: HERE. \nFor more information\, visit Manship Artists Residency at ManshipArtists.org or contact Rebecca Reynolds\, rreynolds@ManshipArtists.org\, 978-290-8438.

SUMMARY:"To the Farthest Ports of the Rich East" Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join James Fichter as he discusses profit and peril in the new trade to Asia \nWith independence from Britain secured\, in the 1780s American began trading to Asia for themselves. They bought tea in China. They sailed to the East India Company-administered India for cloth\, to Yemen and Dutch Java for coffee\, to Sumatra for pepper\, and to many other ports in between. The trade to Asia accelerated as the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) kept European traders out of Asian waters\, creating a tussle between between British and American crews to supply French-occupied Europe with Asian goods. This process created a new class of American investor-capitalists and the first American millionaires. Yet such wealth came at a cost\, as the ever growing and increasingly wealthy American trading fleet was a tempting target for foreign states and pirates—from Britain and France to Barbary and Yemen—against which the U.S. Navy was not always a match.

SUMMARY:Artful Conversations: “Baptism\,” by Anne Rearick
DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations \nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nThis presentation explores Baptism by photographer Anne Rearick\, whose work is featured in a special museum exhibition. Rooted in the tradition of documentary photography\, Rearick distinguishes herself through her long-term relationships with the people and places she photographs\, including the Gloucester community. Through Baptism and related works\, she captures the importance of shared public spaces as places where people gather\, build connections\, create traditions\, and foster a sense of belonging. Her photographs reveal how community life unfolds over time\, preserving collective experiences and cultural memory. \nAlthough Miriam Weinstein has lived on Cape Ann for more than three decades\, she loves finding new places and new stories and sharing them with visitors. She was a painting major in college and thought of herself as a visual person until she became\, first\, a documentary filmmaker and then a journalist. Having spent the bulk of her professional life as a writer\, she now thinks she might be a word person after all. She was a staff member at North Shore Weeklies newspapers for many years. Her book\, Yiddish: A Nation of Words\, won the National Jewish Book award. Her book\, The Surprising Power of Family Meals gave her a platform to lecture and consult on the topic internationally. Miriam likes changing gears\, which fits well with CAM’s varied collection. She gives tours to adults\, family groups\, and kids. She enjoys moving quickly and making sure that everyone stays engaged. She loves the fact that tours can be very personalized. Each tour is different\, depending on the interests of the docent and the guests\, as well as the changing exhibits. Much like Cape Ann\, Museum visits are creative\, personable\, idiosyncratic\, and rich in beauty and history.

SUMMARY:Delta Generators with Julie Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Real music by real people\, played live and recorded live. This best embodies the philosophy of\nestablished Boston band Delta Generators and their approach for their latest record ON & ON.\nIn an industry where technology has become the standard and intelligence has become artificial\,\nDelta Generators are keeping it real and will continue to do so going forward. All the songs on\nthis record were written\, arranged and rehearsed over a period of eight days and then recorded in\ntwo days at Power Station N.E. in Waterford\, CT by Evan Bakke\, best known for his work with\nWarren Haynes and Prince. The idea was to get together\, play and when something feels right\,\nwork it! No preconceived ideas as to what it should be. A journey of liberation\, inspiration and\nperspiration. Yeah\, Blues is the vehicle\, but their lifelong love of rock music is the fuel that\npowers it. \nBrothers Charlie and Rick O’Neal\, on guitar and bass respectively\, have been playing together\nsince their teenage years. Most notably as members of Benjamin Orr’s band\, former singer and\nbass player with The Cars. Sometimes they would go off and do other projects\, Charlie toured\nwith UK band Must and Rick played in Boston guitar hero Johnny A’s band\, but inevitably they\nwould play together again and again. Charlie had been playing in rock bands throughout\nhis early years\, but he was always a huge fan of Blues guitar. He spent years honing his abilities\nby playing along with records. When the opportunity presented itself for a Blues driven side\nproject\, he was all in. That moment altered his future\, placing him in the position to celebrate his\npassion for personal heroes like Elmore James\, Freddie King and Albert Collins. \nWhen the ensemble was first conceived\, a lover of R&B and Soul named Craig Rawding took\nthe mic as the original front man. Charlie O’Neal brought on his brother Rick as the bassist. And \nin 2007\, the Delta Generators were born. The initial drummer had to bail after a few months\, so\nup-and-coming percussionist Jeff Armstrong was brought into the fold. By 2008\, it was no\nlonger a side project\, and they captured the win at the Boston Blues Challenge. They went on to \nMemphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge where they almost took the top spot. \nFrom there the band went on to forge a solid place in the Boston Blues scene. They went on to\nrecord four records before Craig decided to leave the band in 2016. Enter Brian Templeton\, a\nfixture in the local scene since 1991. His band The Radio Kings had already recorded for two\nlabels\, and he had toured all across the U.S. and Europe with them and as a solo artist. A\nconsummate showman and lover of the spirit\, Brian was rooted in the rock music of his youth\nand was already a seasoned Blues Man. It was a perfect fit and the rest as they say is history.\n“Brian lifted the DGs to a new level with his showmanship and drive\,” says Charlie\, “I don’t\nthink the band would have continued if Brian hadn’t joined.” Brother Rick continues\, “Besides\nhis top-notch vocals\, Brian brought a powerful stage presence and killer harmonica playing to\nthe mix and his lyric writing is in a class all by itself.” \nThe new album is anything but vanilla. After all these years together\, the quartet has a voice and\nswagger that is all their own. The new repertoire is a pure collaboration that has captured what\nmakes this union of these four musicians so organic and pure in its creation. Drummer Jeff\nArmstrong shares\, “Unlike the previous record\, which was more of a compilation of great songs\,\nthis new record stands in itself as a complete cohesive work.” Guitarist Charlie O’Neal offers \, \n“ON & ON perfectly captures the live spirit of the band and is by far sonically superior to any of our previous albums.” \nDelta Generators love writing and recording but they live to play live. Making a connection with\ntheir fans is the most important part of it. As Templeton says. “Making a spiritual bond with the\npeople\, our fans\, is why we do what we do. There really is no other reason.”

SUMMARY:Noguchi and Japanese American Internment During World War II
DESCRIPTION:Join curator and scholar Christina Hiromi Hobbs for a talk examining Isamu Noguchi’s voluntary incarceration at the Poston War Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II. Hobbs will discuss Noguchi’s complex motivations for entering the camp\, discuss its impact on his life and work and examine the historical context of art making during Japanese American incarceration. \nAfter the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941\, more than 120\,000 people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated in internment camps created on U.S. soil. Many lived there for the duration of the war. Read more about their stories — and why their experiences still matter today — from the Densho documentation project and Poston Preservation.
