SUMMARY:Lúnasa Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:The beloved Irish folk supergroup\, called the “hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet” (The Irish Echo) returns for a festive holiday concert celebrating the winter solstice. Don’t miss some of the finest pickers\, pipers and fiddlers in the world—Lúnasa will get your spirit (and your feet) moving! \nFormed in 1997\, Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh\, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and over the years has proven its mettle time and again\, having sold over a quarter of a million records and collaborated with notable artists outside the tradition such as Natalie Merchant and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. They have performed more than 2\,000 shows across 36 countries including high-profile concert venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, National Concert Hall (Dublin) and Paris Bercy\, and many of the leading festivals such as Glastonbury\, Womadelaide & Edmonton. \nFrom the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Critical acclaim followed\, The Irish Echo describing the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”; MOJO magazine named the band “the new gods of Irish music\,” adding that “nobody since the Bothies has wielded such a thrilling rhythmic underlay.” Billboard raved that “anybody who listens can’t help but find them contagious.” \nLúnasa’s current lineup features: Trevor Hutchinson\, who achieved fame as the bassist with the The Waterboys: piper Cillian Vallely was a member of Riverdance and recorded with Bruce Springsteen: Flute player Kevin Crawford\, considered one of Ireland’s greatest flute players\, was a member of Moving Cloud: award-winning fiddler Sean Smyth\, who performed with Donal Lunny’s legendary Coolfin and accordionist Alan Kelly; Colin Farrell is a multiple award winning fiddler\, who has toured with Project West\, Grada and Michael McGoldrick: Guitarist Ed Boyd made a name for himself in the UK folkscene with bands such as Flook\, Kate Rusby and Cara Dillon.

SUMMARY:Solstice in the Cemetery: Night Walk Through Oak Hill
DESCRIPTION:What better time than Winter Solstice to grab a flashlight and join us for a walk through historic Oak Hill Cemetery on the longest night of the year? \nTo add to the intimacy and atmosphere of darkness\, many epitaphs are easiest to read by flashlight. Join noted author and historian Ghlee Woodworth\, a 12th generation Newburyport native\, and Museum of Old Newbury executive director Bethany Groff Dorau for a nighttime stroll through the historic 1842 Oak Hill Cemetery\, final resting place of shipwrecked sailors\, sea captains and merchants\, architects and photographers\, writers and poets\, silversmiths and newspaper editors\, even the inventor of the first steam-powered car! We will say hello to several Ebenezers\, though none of them Scrooges\, and toast the longest night with hot cider\, cider donuts\, and good cheer.

SUMMARY:Poet in High Street Park
DESCRIPTION:Join the PEM Reads community for a live book launch! Hear Salem’s first-ever poet laureate J.D. Scrimgeour read from his new work Poet in High Street Park: Prose & Poetry for Modern Salem. \nDavid Snider\, PEM’s Director of Learning & Community Engagement\, will host an author talk with Scrimgeour followed by a light reception and book signing. \nPoet in High Street Park: Prose & Poetry for Modern Salem is a love song to Salem by a writer who has grounded himself in the everyday realities of living in the city for the past 30 years\, from playgrounds to classrooms to ballfields. It is testimony that\, Halloween hoopla aside\, people live here. SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free day at PEM as we celebrate and reflect on the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the upcoming exhibition Edmonia Lewis: Said In Stone. \nArtist Edmonia Lewis moved continually throughout her life\, living in upstate New York\, Ohio\, Boston\, London and Rome\, searching for a place where she could thrive as an individual and artist. We invite visitors to reflect on their own identity and search for community\, drawing inspiration from Lewis’ life as well as the enduring ideals of justice\, equality and inclusion embodied by leaders like King. \nNorth Shore Youth Community Mural \n10 am–5 pm | Main Atrium \nIn partnership with RAW Art Works\, young artists across Salem and Lynn have been collaborating on a large-scale community mural\, reflecting on ways they hope to embody the idea of belonging. What words would you leave behind for the next generation\, written in the history books like Martin or carved into stone like Edmonia? \nDrop-In Art Making: Collagraphs \n11 am–3 pm | Create Space Studios \nWe invite you to contribute your own words for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Make your own collagraph printmaking plate or find one made by a community member that speaks to you. Add your words to a second mural and take a print home as a keepsake. \nWe’ll also be screening the short film “My Black Is…” in the Create Space Studios to inspire you as you create. This film\, made by RAW Art Works alums Miguel Valdez and Eunice Beato\, features young women working to redefine what their Black identity means to them.

SUMMARY:Legally Blonde the Musical JR.
DESCRIPTION:The Gloucester Stage Youth Company will have Gloucester thinking pink when they present their production of Legally Blonde JR. \nDelta Nu sorority president Elle Woods seems to have it all: good looks\, a relationship with the “campus catch\,” and great taste in clothes. However her life is turned upside-down when her boyfriend\, Warner\, dumps her in an attempt to start getting “serious” about his future and attend Harvard Law. Once at school\, she is challenged by her peers\, professors and her ex\, but with the help of some new friends\, Elle realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world. There is no dress code\, but please don’t wear white after Labor Day \nWith a book by Heather Hach\, music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin\, Legally Blonde JR. is based on the book by Amanda Brown and the hit Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon. \nGloucester Stage Company presents: Legally Blonde JR.

SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Currently\, he is in the process of writing his next book\, “For God’s Sake\, Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027.\nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism
