SUMMARY:GA-20 with Jay Aptt and The MaliCaminos
DESCRIPTION:7/5/25\nReserved Seating $35\nGA Standing $20\n7:00pm Doors / 8:00pm Show\n18+ / Positive I.D. Required \nGA-20 \nSince 2018\, GA-20 has been at the forefront of a traditional Blues revival. The dynamic throwback trio have long been disciples of the place where traditional Blues\, Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to\,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric Blues we love.” Stubbs\, along with guitarist & vocalist Cody Nilsen and drummer Josh Kiggans\, strive to bring traditional Blues to the front lines of the modern roots music scene. “The focus for us has always been on the story\, the melody\, and on creating a mood\,” Stubbs continues. “Traditional Country and Soul have all had these massive recent revivals. We want to be part of doing that for traditional Blues music.” \nGA-20 has drawn inspiration for their old-school sounds from the music they love by artists such as Otis Rush\, J.B. Lenoir\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Junior Wells\, Hound Dog Taylor\, Earl Hooker\, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and so many others. Performing with what feels like reckless abandon\, GA-20 brings a timeless immediacy to every song they play with a sound that continues to grow and evolve. The band uses vintage instruments and amps to produce their authentic sound\, and favours traditional recording techniques\, like recording live off the floor together in one room\, to help recreate that energy and sonic connection. \nIn their short history\, GA-20 have been 3x #1 Billboard Blues chart toppers\, 4x Boston Music Award winners for Best Blues Act\, and have received multiple wins and nominations at the Blues Music Awards\, Blues Blast Awards\, New England Blues Awards\, and have ascended streaming and radio charts at home and internationally. Medium.com has appropriately declared\, “This is the kind of music that travels through time while taking from the era where it was born and turning it into something fresh. Dirty and raw…timeless and modern.”’s sound. \nJAY APTT AND THE MALICAMINOS \nJay Aptt discovered his love for cars\, guitars\, the MaliCamino\, blues\, rock and soul at 16. \nSince days and years ago\, hauling equipment in the MaliCamino\, he’s shared the stage with greats\, James Montgomery\, Johnny A of Peter Wolf/Yardbirds\, Joe Nadeau of Kenny Wayne Shepherd band\, Mike O’Connell\, Lois Lane\, Barrence Whitfield\, Erinn Brown\, Lisa Marie\, Borderland Allstars and more. \nThe Malicamino…a creation of brother Dave’s ass haulin’\, tire smokin’ ’78 Malibu and a Diablo Red El Camino. Bastardized and hand cut smoldering to create the unmistakable\, head turning Malicamino. \nRiding shotgun is his long time partner in crime Ben [OB1] Ferrini on bass – who sometimes rode in the back holding down the equipment on the road.

SUMMARY:Yoga and Meditation in the Galleries at PEM
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: East India Marine Hall \nMembers $5; nonmembers $10\nAdvance tickets are required; space is limited. \nPlease note that this session will begin with meditation\, followed by yoga. \nThis class is designed to be accessible to all ages and abilities. No prior experience with yoga or meditation is necessary – all are welcome! Limited seating will be available in the gallery during meditation. \nSealed water is permitted in the gallery during yoga and meditation. \nWe recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and silence your phone or devices for this program to get the most out of this mindfulness practice. \nJoin us for a morning of yoga and meditation! Deepen your breath and take in the serenity of the historic East India Marine Hall during a yoga class led by Soul City Yoga. Then\, stick around for a special guided mindfulness session in the gallery from 10:15–10:45 am. \nAbout the Gallery\nEast India Marine Hall was built using local Cape Ann granite in 1824-25 by the architect Thomas Waldron Sumner. It was the headquarters for the East India Marine Society\, PEM’s founding organization. This group of 22 sea captains and traders sailed all over the world from Salem and started the oldest collecting museum in America in 1799. East India Marine Hall is the historical and physical heart of the museum; over time\, added gallery spaces have surrounded it. Recently restored to its original elegance\, the building is a National Historic Landmark. \nEast India Marine Hall currently houses nine carved ship’s figureheads that are juxtaposed with amplified music and sea ballads as a part of Scottish artist Susan Philipsz’s exhibition If I With You Would Go. Philipsz uses sound to heighten awareness of space\, emotion and memory. Her choice of a song about a young woman lured away to sea is a mythical and cautionary echo of the mercantile and maritime history embodied in this historic hall. \nObserving art can induce a “flow state” of mindfulness and activate the same part of the brain that more traditional mindfulness practices\, like meditation and yoga\, do. Join us on the first Sunday morning of every month (second Sundays for holiday weekends) in a guided practice of “mindful looking.” Come be still\, relax and connect more deeply with artworks from PEM’s collection.

SUMMARY:Reading Together Fredrick Douglass’ Fourth of July Address\, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of William Lloyd Garrison invites members of the public to join them in reading aloud Fredrick Douglass’ Fourth of July Address\, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” at 10 a.m. Sunday\, July 6\, in Brown Square.\nThis 8th annual public\, interactive reading is sponsored by the Friends of William Lloyd Garrison\, the Museum of Old Newbury\, and the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist\, in partnership with Mass Humanities.\nThe reading will be followed by a discussion led by Jason Sokol\, a historian of the civil rights movement\, professor at University of New Hampshire and a Newburyport resident.\nThis is an outdoor event and open to all. Please bring folding chairs if you would like to sit. Participation in this public reading event is encouraged but not required.\nIn case of rain this event will be held inside at the First Religious Society UU\, 26 Pleasant Street\, Newburyport. Call 978-578-2486 to confirm the event location.\nFor more information contact Kristen Fehlhaber or Andrea Gaut Eigerman\, co-chairs of Friends of William Lloyd Garrison\, 978-578-2486 (Kristen) or 978-376-6376 (Andrea).\nMass Humanities has provided grants to nonprofits to host public readings and discussions of this famous speech this summer across Massachusetts. Newburyport is one of dozens of sites hosting a public reading Frederick Douglass Together event.\nDouglass escaped from enslavement in 1838 and lived for many years in Massachusetts. He delivered this speech on July 5\, 1852\, in Rochester\, New York\, to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. The most celebrated orator of his day\, Douglass’ powerful language\, resolute denunciations of slavery\, and forceful examination of the Constitution challenge us to think about the histories we tell\, the values they teach\, and if our actions match our aspirations. To quote Douglass\, “We have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the future.”\nThis program is funded in part by Mass Humanities\, which receives support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.\nFor information\, please visit: WLGarrison.com
