SUMMARY:Rockport Music Presents Bre Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Bre Kennedy is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter acclaimed for her introspective storytelling and evocative performances. Her work has been praised by Billboard\, Paste\, American Songwriter\, and featured on key Spotify playlists including New Music Friday and Today’s Singer-Songwriters.\nKnown for her powerful live shows\, she has headlined sold-out performances at Nashville staples like Exit/In\, The Basement East\, The Blue Room\, and supported artists such as NEEDTOBREATHE\, Stephen Wilson Jr.\, The Paper Kites\, Joy Oladokun and Sheryl Crow at the Ryman Auditorium. As a songwriter\, she has collaborated with industry standouts including Jake Wesley Rogers and Lori McKenna\, with whom she co-wrote the acclaimed track “Before I Have a Daughter.” Her forthcoming fourth studio album\, The Alchemist\, released on January 30th 2026 marks a new creative chapter—an unflinchingly honest and artfully crafted body of work shaped by personal growth\, emotional clarity\, and a renewed sense of purpose. \nCreated in collaboration with trusted co-writers including Melissa Fuller\, Ben West\, Michigander\, Hadley Kennary\, Micah Tawlks\, Cheyenna Rose\, Spencer Rabin\, Collin Pastore\, Jake Finch\, Wilson Bcbeath and John Stark\, the album is more than a collection of songs; it’s an intentionally crafted map home. Bre threads hope through the darker moments\, writing with the conviction of someone who knows that beauty can bloom from the hardest places. “I want to encourage people with my songs to see the flowers through the concrete\,” she says — and it’s this sentiment that’s the heartbeat of the album. \nBre has cemented herself as an artist to watch and one of the brightest voices out of the New Nashville music scene both on stage and in the writing room\, recently securing cuts with artists such as Lily Meola\, Willie Nelson\, Lukas Nelson\, Joy Oladokun\, Lori McKenna\, GAYLE\, Britney Spencer and Billy Raffoul.

SUMMARY:Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone Exhibition Catalogue
DESCRIPTION:Why do museums publish exhibition catalogues? In this special edition of PEM Reads\, two curators will break down what goes into a book such as Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone and how it can serve as a lasting record of a temporary exhibition. \nAn exhibition catalogue typically gathers photos and reproductions of the artworks in a museum show\, accompanied by essays from curators\, artists and other experts about the exhibition’s theme. It can represent a souvenir of a favorite museum experience\, a rare behind-the-scenes look at a topic or an important research source for art historians. Museum catalogues can even transport readers to an exhibition they couldn’t visit in person. \nChief Curator Petra Slinkard will moderate the discussion. \nThe catalogue is available from the PEM Shop in hardcover ($60) and paperback editions ($36). You do not need to purchase the book to enjoy this event.

Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art offers Mourning Alters with Johanna Topitizer Finnegan
DESCRIPTION:Altars offer sacred space for us to visit each day and make offerings of devotion to the loved ones in our lives – those who have passed and those still with us. They help us bring focus and ritual into our daily lives which can make us feel part of something larger than ourselves. Many cultures use altars throughout the year or on special days to remember those who have passed and remind them that we have not forgotten them. \nIn this workshop\, we will talk about altars from other parts of the world and religions to see how they are traditionally created. Then\, we’ll talk about what yours might include like pictures and symbols of your loved one to favorite objects that were treasured in their life. As we create these altars with love and remembrance\, you are welcome to bring a story to share (optional) about your beloved animal or human. Hopefully\, the piece you create will bring you peace as you display it and use it. Beginners as well as experienced artists are welcome to take the workshop. Johanna will guide you through using traditional box making techniques to build our alters. For ages 16 and up.

She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. \nSue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire\, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work\, you may just be surprised!

SUMMARY:The Many Names of Anonymity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an author talk and book signing for a groundbreaking new publication with close ties to PEM’s collection. In The Many Names of Anonymity: Portraitists of the Canton Trade\, art historian Winnie Wong explores the vibrant community of artists working in Guangzhou\, China in the 18th and 19th centuries. \nMany of their paintings survive today\, yet scholars have identified only a handful of the painters’ identities. Pushing against Western norms that have shaped our understanding of authorship\, Wong reveals that these artists shared names\, created works in multiples and signed their pieces with different names or none at all. She charts the genealogy of this naming problem by bringing to life the artists of the Qing Empire’s trade with Westerners at the port of Guangzhou\, centering on a group of portraitists known by names that were recorded in a pidgin language: Chin Qua\, Chit Qua\, Spoilum\, Lam Qua and Ting Qua. \nWong’s lavishly illustrated book explores portraiture across media\, including unfired clay\, reverse painting on glass\, watercolor on paper\, oil on canvas and the daguerreotype\, to propose new ways of studying anonymity\, copying and the emergence of author names in the Chinese-European visual culture of the 18th century. \nWong will present a talk to introduce the book’s main themes and then talk with Karina Corrigan\, Deputy Chief Curator and H. A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art at PEM about her ongoing research.
