DESCRIPTION:Engage your curious budding gardener or adventurer in our new Little Sprouts in the Garden series\, a monthly themed program to connect your child with the natural world around us. \nAs the snow begins to melt with spring around the corner\, it may be too cold for fresh flowers or green grass in the gardens! In the meantime\, bring some green life inside your house with a terrarium workshop to create a miniature natural world! Participants will learn about plant care and life cycle basics and leave with a mini terrarium of their own. Recommended for ages 6-10 but all are welcome. The exhibition highlights the profound impact of portraiture in capturing the essence\, strength\, and diversity of women’s experiences. \nIn addition to contemporary works\, the exhibition will feature a copy of Winslow Homer’s The Lookout – All’s Well\, painted by Irene Fenton Hammond\, wife of John Hays Hammond Jr.\, who resided at Hammond Castle Museum until her passing in 1959 and who was a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. \nAlso on display will be a painting by Natalie Hays Hammond\, the accomplished artist\, playwright\, and Hammond Jr’s sister. Her painting\, Costume Designs\, Series B\, No. 3\, Medieval Abbess\, is on loan from the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem\, NY\, which Natalie founded in 1957. \nThis exhibit is open daily from March 22 through March 30th from noon to 5 pm\, and the last entrance is at 4:15 pm\, with the exception of Sunday\, March 30th\, when there will be a closing reception from noon to 2 pm\, during which time purchased paintings may be picked up. \nPlease note: Attendees will have access to the small interior rooms leading down to the Great Hall and the Great Hall. The exhibition highlights the profound impact of portraiture in capturing the essence\, strength\, and diversity of women’s experiences. \nIn addition to contemporary works\, the exhibition will feature a copy of Winslow Homer’s The Lookout – All’s Well\, painted by Irene Fenton Hammond\, wife of John Hays Hammond Jr.\, who resided at Hammond Castle Museum until her passing in 1959 and who was a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. \nAlso on display will be a painting by Natalie Hays Hammond\, the accomplished artist\, playwright\, and Hammond Jr’s sister. Her painting\, Costume Designs\, Series B\, No. 3\, Medieval Abbess\, is on loan from the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem\, NY\, which Natalie founded in 1957. \nThis exhibit is open daily from March 22 through March 30th from noon to 5 pm\, and the last entrance is at 4:15 pm\, with the exception of Sunday\, March 30th\, when there will be a closing reception from noon to 2 pm\, during which time purchased paintings may be picked up. \nPlease note: Attendees will have access to the small interior rooms leading down to the Great Hall and the Great Hall. After the slide presentation we will examine one of her pieces in the CAM collection: Pelican\, Bronze\, c. 1940s. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! Frank Baum’s iconic children’s story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ushered in a new age for the witch\, transforming these monstrous figures of old into good\, kind\, and beautiful characters. \nWhile we will never know what precisely inspired Baum to include good witches in his story\, this presentation will discuss the influence of one powerful close connection\, Matilda Joslyn Gage. Though her name is unfamiliar today\, Gage was an important leader of the first wave feminist movement\, a trailblazing human rights activist\, and the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum. \nJoin the Salem Witch Museum Department of Education on Wednesday\, March 26th at 6:00 pm EST for this free virtual program about the fascinating woman behind Oz. This presentation will discuss the life and work of Matilda Joslyn Gage\, her relationship with her famous-son-in-law\, and the effect of Baum’s work on the evolving perception of the witch. \n

SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Art Colony: For Women\, By Women at Hammond Castle Museum
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Art Colony and Hammond Castle Museum proudly present Portraits of Women\, by Women\, a special collaboration in celebration of Women’s History Month. \nThis inspiring exhibit showcases recent portraits by distinguished women artists from the Rocky Neck Art Colony\, including Elizabeth Bish\, Janice Brand\, Robin Colodzin\, Susan Ellis\, Elizabeth Gauthier\, Janet Grover\, Joyce Roessler\, and Amy Sudarsky. The exhibition highlights the profound impact of portraiture in capturing the essence\, strength\, and diversity of women’s experiences. \nIn addition to contemporary works\, the exhibition will feature a copy of Winslow Homer’s The Lookout – All’s Well\, painted by Irene Fenton Hammond\, wife of John Hays Hammond Jr.\, who resided at Hammond Castle Museum until her passing in 1959 and who was a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. \nAlso on display will be a painting by Natalie Hays Hammond\, the accomplished artist\, playwright\, and Hammond Jr’s sister. Her painting\, Costume Designs\, Series B\, No. 3\, Medieval Abbess\, is on loan from the Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden in North Salem\, NY\, which Natalie founded in 1957. \nThis exhibit is open daily from March 22 through March 30th from noon to 5 pm\, and the last entrance is at 4:15 pm\, with the exception of Sunday\, March 30th\, when there will be a closing reception from noon to 2 pm\, during which time purchased paintings may be picked up. \nPlease note: Attendees will have access to the small interior rooms leading down to the Great Hall and the Great Hall. The Museum will be closed to tours.\n– Children ages 12 and under are free with tickets.\n– Teens and Adults are $15.

SUMMARY:Portrait of a Sculptor: Walker Hancock & Michael Lafferty
DESCRIPTION:Walker Hancock was one of the premier American sculptors of the 20th century and a highly engaged and respected member of the Cape Ann community. Michael Lafferty is a skilled photographer who spent hours photographing Hancock in his Lanesville studio\, creating a series of intimate portraits of the sculptor at work.
