SUMMARY:Billy Childs Trio
DESCRIPTION:Experience an evening with Billy Childs\, one of the most celebrated and visionary composers and pianists of our time. Widely regarded as among the foremost American composers of his generation\, Childs has forged a singular voice that seamlessly unites jazz\, classical\, and contemporary chamber music traditions—creating a richly expressive style that is both sophisticated and deeply personal. \nA six-time GRAMMY-Award winner and seventeen-time nominee\, Childs has been honored across genres\, receiving awards for Best Instrumental Composition\, Best Arrangement\, and Best Instrumental Jazz Album\, most recently for The Winds of Change. His groundbreaking ability to move fluidly between jazz improvisation and orchestral composition has earned him commissions from leading institutions including the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Detroit Symphony\, National Symphony\, Kronos Quartet\, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His works have been performed at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nChilds first rose to prominence as a prodigious young pianist with J.J. Johnson and Freddie Hubbard\, launching a jazz career that has evolved into one of remarkable breadth. His recordings—ranging from the acclaimed Lyric and Autumn: In Moving Pictures to Map to the Treasure\, featuring artists such as Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma—demonstrate his extraordinary range and collaborative spirit. \nIn performance\, Childs combines virtuosic piano artistry with compositional brilliance\, delivering music that is lyrical\, rhythmically vibrant\, and emotionally resonant. Whether in intimate trio settings or expansive chamber works\, Billy Childs offers a concert experience that bridges traditions and redefines the possibilities of American music.

SUMMARY:Rockport Music Presents: Skylark
DESCRIPTION:Six-time GRAMMY®-nominated Skylark presents Clear Voices in the Dark\, pairing Poulenc’s wartime masterpiece Figure Humaine with Civil War–era songs in a powerful reflection on the human voice in times of conflict. \nClear Voices in the Dark\nFrancis Poulenc’s Figure Humaine is one of the most extraordinary works composed for unaccompanied choir. Written in 1943 in occupied France and set to resistance-inspired poems by Paul Éluard\, it confronts the realities of war\, culminating in Liberté—an embattled cry for freedom.Clear Voices in the Dark places this work alongside music from the American Civil War\, bringing two periods of conflict into direct conversation. The recording of this program received two GRAMMY® nominations in 2024. The 2026 program also includes a new arrangement of America the Beautiful by Matthew Guard and Benedict Sheehan. \nThis performance will be filmed. Audience members may be visible in recorded material. \nAbout Skylark\nSix-time GRAMMY®-nominated Skylark creates moments that may live with you for the rest of your life. \nOur programs draw connections between music\, history\, art\, and place. Projects have included an exploration of hidden musical codes with Dan Brown; a meditation on human hope and resistance pairing Poulenc’s Figure Humaine with American Civil War songs; A Christmas Carol with Christine Baranski at the Morgan Library & Museum; an exploration of mathematics and music at MIT; Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles at the Hispanic Society of America; and candlelit performances of medieval to modern sacred works at the Met Cloisters. \nFeatured in The New York Times\, Associated Press\, BBC\, and Gramophone. Fourteen albums. Six GRAMMY® nominations. Recent recordings distributed by LSO Live. \nFounded in 2011 by artistic director Matthew Guard\, Skylark maintains deep roots in Massachusetts and New York.

SUMMARY:PEM Presents Vivaldi with Symphony by the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert and talk with the North Shore’s professional symphony orchestra\, Symphony by the Sea. Over the centuries\, the four seasons have inspired numerous composers to represent their moods in music. During the Baroque period (1500-1750)\, many composers produced cycles of concertos representing the seasons. Antonio Vivaldi used four sonnets of his own creation as a starting point for the vivid and lively music of his Four Seasons. Follow the sonnets together with Maestro Donald Palma\, then enjoy a virtuosic performance. \nThe program will include a 20-minute talk by Maestro Donald Palma and an approximately 45-minute performance of the Four Seasons\, followed by a light reception. \nPEM Presents is made possible by The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.

SUMMARY:Alexander Knudsen at The Bookstore of Gloucester
DESCRIPTION:The Bookstore is thrilled to host photographer Alex Knudsen on Thursday June 4th from 6:30pm-8pm to celebrate his new photo book MOURNING DOVE – published by Dust Collective. Please save the date and join us in store to hear more about the project and enjoy some complimentary food & drink. \n“Mourning Dove by Alexander Knudsen reflects on the intertwined memories of family and place. Knudsen writes\, “My grandfather taught me how to cup my hands together\, thumbs pointed to create a mouthpiece to mimic the coo of the bird that calls each morning. The mourning dove is thought to be a harbinger of deliverance\, or a spiritual message of hope. Its soft\, sorrowful call marks the beginning of a new day.” \nThe daily sound of a mourning dove forms a rhythm for life in Ipswich\, Massachusetts\, where the artist lives with his family and where his mother and grandfather before him also called home. \nMade along the tidal banks\, river paths\, and marshlands of Cape Ann\, these photographs show the textures of this coastal landscape. Morning walks\, fleeting encounters\, and Craigslist connections weave together with intimate family moments to create a layered portrait of place. \nBoth personal and universal\, the book shows how place and memory intertwine\, and how noticing becomes an act of remembrance and grace.” \nBooks will be available for sale at the event!

SUMMARY:The Police Academy Tribute at Larcom
DESCRIPTION:The Police Academy tribute band is one of the few younger acts in the tribute scene\, bringing the energy\, style\, and sound of Sting and The Police at the height of their career. With authentic wardrobe\, strong musicianship\, and undeniable enthusiasm\, they capture everything from the raw\, stripped-down punk edge of The Police’s early records to the polished\, synth-driven pop of their later hits. \nBandmates Joshua Jones\, Jon McCracken\, and Christian Hernandez share the same rock and jazz influence that shaped Sting\, Stewart Copeland\, and Andy Summers\, giving their performance a standout authenticity. With experience in acclaimed tribute acts including Jumping Jack Flash\, Wild Child\, and The Fab Four\, they bring world-class talent\, humor\, and showmanship to every show. \nFrom favorites like “Message in a Bottle” and “Every Breath You Take” to deeper cuts like “Murder by Numbers” and “When the World is Running Down\,” The Police Academy Tribute delivers an exciting\, authentic tribute to one of the most iconic bands of the 1980s. \nThelarcom.org/thepoliceacademy
