SUMMARY:Karla Bonoff
DESCRIPTION:Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer/songwriters of her generation. That description is not hyperbole. Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim\, commercial success\, enduring popularity\, and the unwavering respect of her peers. \nKarla has seen her songs become hits for Bonnie Raitt\, Wynonna Judd\, and Linda Ronstadt. Many of Bonoff’s ballads are classics. Karla has continued to record and tour extensively\, playing sold-out shows around the world. Hearing Karla’s moving vocals on her rich\, expressive songs is like standing beneath a sparkling waterfall–refreshing\, exhilarating\, and restorative. Experiencing them live can be transformative. Fans and critics agree that Bonoff’s songs are timeless as are her recordings. Many prefer her versions\, live with instrumentation that is clean and spare\, giving Bonoff’s voice room to work its emotional magic. \nIn 2019\, Karla released her first new album in over a decade\, Carry Me Home\, a 16-song set featuring brand new recordings of Karla’s classics along with new songs by Karla\, Kenny Edwards\, and a cover of a vintage Jackson Browne tune\, Something Fine\, which Karla performed on the 2015 compilation\, Looking into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne. In late 2020\, Karla released\, Silent Night\, her first collection of Holiday music\, to wide acclaim\, including a prominent listing on the New York Times Best New Holiday Albums of the Year. In 2021 Karla added two new songs to her Holiday collection including a duet with the legendary Michael McDonald. \nThe media continues to follow and shine a spotlight on Karla’s ongoing career milestones. She was featured in the acclaimed Linda Ronstadt documentary: The Sound of My Voice\, highlighting her friendship with Linda and as the writer of several of her biggest songs\, including Grammy Winner\, All My Life. Bob Lefsetz\, a longtime fan\, interviewed her for his popular podcast and dug deep into her history as a pioneer of the Southern California Singer-Songwriter scene\, Trisha Yearwood’s new album includes a lovely rendition of Karla’s\, Home. Mary Sue Toohey of The Village on Sirius/XM hosted a performance & interview\, and she was invited to sing on the longest-running radio program for acoustic music\, Acoustic Café. As dynamic as ever in her solo shows\, Karla is also available to package with various accomplished musical partners\, including a new offering\, “Home for the Holidays” with Livingston Taylor (by arrangement with Paladin Artists).

SUMMARY:Ryan Montbleau
DESCRIPTION:A relentless road warrior and masterful wordsmith\, Ryan Montbleau has spent the better part of thirty years cultivating a devoted audience on the strength of his ecstatic live shows and exhilarating sonic versatility. He’s collaborated with artists as diverse as Trombone Shorty\, Galactic\, Steel Pulse\, Tall Heights\, Martin Sexton\, Anders Osborne\, and George Porter\, Jr; shared bills with the likes of Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Ani DiFranco\, Todd Snider\, The Wood Brothers\, Rodrigo y Gabriela\, and Mavis Staples; and racked up more than 150 million streams on Spotify alone. NPR’s Mountain Stage compared his “eloquent\, soulful songwriting” to Bill Withers and James Taylor\, while Relix celebrated his “poetic Americana\,” and The Boston Herald raved that “he’s made a career of confident\, danceable positivity.” \nMontbleau’s freewheeling new album finds him exploring the full spectrum of his influences like never before\, touching on folk\, rock\, funk\, soul\, hip-hop\, and reggae\, all with a preternatural ease that belies the intensely focused craftsmanship behind it. The songs are sprawling and unpredictable\, grappling with a modern world perpetually teetering on the edge of chaos\, but the performances are relentlessly optimistic\, insisting on hope and joy in the face of it all. The result is Montbleau’s most vulnerable and cathartic work yet\, an album that acknowledges the inevitability of doubt and pain while at the same time celebrating our limitless capacity for growth and love.

Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire\, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work\, you may just be surprised!

SUMMARY:Neal Francis
DESCRIPTION:The latest album from Neal Francis\, Return To Zero\, emerged from the kind of visionary fever dream that only the most masterful and inventive artists are capable of bringing to life. Amid a grueling tour schedule that found him playing nearly 400 shows from 2021 to 2024\, the Chicago-based singer/songwriter/pianist immersed himself in creating a beautifully strange entangling of timeless rock & roll and ’70s-era dance music\, merging supremely heavy guitar riffs with lush and pulsating grooves—all constructed sans digital programming\, in keeping with his devotion to all things analog. Worlds away from the glitzy fantasia of archetypal disco\, Return To Zero inhabits a far moodier atmosphere and ultimately makes for the most thrilling manifestation of Francis’ peerless musicality yet.

SUMMARY:Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. Ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. \nAbout WINGMASTERS:\nJulie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts and are dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, WINGMASTERS has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nAll proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations. Museum member savings apply!

SUMMARY:Larry McCray
DESCRIPTION:Experience the raw power and soul of the blues with Larry McCray\, a true Rust Belt blues shouter and fiery guitar slinger whose music hits straight from the heart. “‘Blues Without You’ is a career defining song\, that could arguably rival ‘The Thrill is Gone’ or other Blues classics.” — Blues Rock Review Born in Magnolia\, Arkansas and raised on a farm\, McCray found his voice through the guitar\, inspired by the legendary “Three Kings” — B.B.\, Freddie\, and Albert. By the late 1980s\, his electrifying style caught the attention of Virgin Records\, launching a career that helped shape modern blues rock. With decades of nonstop touring\, searing live performances\, and collaborations with icons like B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, and Joe Bonamassa\, Larry McCray’s shows are equal parts grit\, groove\, and emotional fire.

SUMMARY:King Yellowman
DESCRIPTION:Jamaica’s first dancehall superstar\, Yellowman ushered in a new era in reggae music following Bob Marley’s death. His early-’80s success brought the popularity of toasting — the reggae equivalent of rapping — to a whole new level\, and helped establish dancehall as the wave of the future. For better or for worse\, he also epitomized dancehall’s penchant for “slack” lyrics — that is\, casual violence\, sexism\, homophobia\, and general rudeness. Graphic sexuality was his particular forte\, reaching levels of explicitness previously unheard in Jamaica. It brought him numerous detractors\, but it was also a big reason for his early popularity. There was more to it than that\, though; Yellowman was one of the most verbally nimble toasters of his time\, with a loose\, easy flow\, a talent for improvisation\, and a definite wit in his wordplay. Plus\, all the boasting about his prowess on the mic or in the bedroom had to be over the top to be convincing: true to his stage name\, Yellowman is an albino\, which carries a tremendous social stigma in Jamaica. His rise to stardom was unlikely enough\, but his transformation from untouchable outcast into sex symbol was staggering — and may not even have taken place without his trademark lewdness. Shocking though it could be\, it affirmed him as a sexual being just like his listeners\, and was delivered with enough humor to let the audience know that he didn’t take himself too seriously. Bouts with cancer pushed him into more thoughtful\, socially conscious territory in the 1990s\, but his initial style remains the most influential\, paving the way for countless dancehall toasters to follow. He remained quiet through most of the 2000s before mounting a comeback with 2019’s\nNo More War.

SUMMARY:Rakish
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in tradition with an ear toward the future\, contemporary folk duo Rakish embodies earnest musical exploration and demonstrates an infectious playfulness on stage. In their sound together\, it is evident the two friends share an unbridled love for the traditional sounds of Celtic and American music\, and the tight ensemble of a group with years of collaboration under their belt. \nEnjoy an evening of live music in the relaxed\, lounge-like setting of Upstairs on Main\, where great music meets a casual atmosphere with the bar open throughout the event. \nLocation: Shalin Liu Performance Center Third Floor Lounge \n“Lush arrangements… deliver an intimate but bold sound.” -Dan Neely\, The Irish Echo \nStrings Magazine says: “Explorative and versatile\, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition\, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.” \nKnown for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world\, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Maura is a 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland. Her clawhammer banjo playing and songwriting\, also featured in the duo\, hold the regional music of her homeland close. Maura finds her niche combining influences from a widespread musical journey with the sounds she grew up around. \nSteeped in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore\, MD where he was raised\, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literary theory and poetry\, a unique well of material from which he draws unending musical inspiration. His settings of modernist poems\, like James Joyce’s Chamber Music\, epitomize the duo’s approach: the dexterous alchemy of the old and the new into something wholly Rakish. A keenly sought-after collaborative guitarist\, Conor performs with many of the most renowned names in Celtic music today. His guitar style combines bass and rhythm for a uniquely powerful and precise sound. \nRakish\, embracing the unconventional connotation of their namesake\, create and perform music with verve. Recent highlights of their travels include performances at the Library of Congress\, Celtic Colours International Music Festival\, Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls\, the Corvallis Celtic Festival\, and Official Showcases at Folk Alliance International. They have taught at esteemed fiddle camps across the country including Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp\, Folk College\, Katie McNally’s Boston States Fiddle Camp\, and Hanneke Cassel’s Pure Dead Brilliant Fiddle Weekend. \nOn Now\, O Now\, the duo’s sophomore release (out October 11\, 2024) it is clear Rakish cannot be pigeonholed into one genre and is most comfortable occupying the in-between. Together they journey through Celtic and Americana styles\, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition. They are touring their new album across the country throughout the fall of 2024 and into 2025.
