This special program for ages 3-11 & their families will focus on the magic of maple from start to finish. We will discover this tradition by observing trees\, tasting sap\, learning the tools involved\, and finally\, tasting the sweet product. We will make sure to have time to visit our barnyard animals! \nThis program is for families and will last approximately 45 minutes. Please dress for the weather as the program is held outdoors. Children over 12 may be better suited for our Adult Maple Strolls as the information at Maple in the Barnyard is geared towards a younger audience\, however\, all are welcome. \nLooking for a more adult tour? Sign up for our Adult Maple Stroll instead! \nSpace is limited for this event and pre-registration is strongly recommended. \nWe will have a food station open selling maple baked goods\, snacks and treats from 11:30-3pm by the sugar shack. SUMMARY:CAM Talk – Mending Movement: Sail Repair in the Early Maritime Atlantic\, with Emily Whitted
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\nCAM Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $10\nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nIn the age of sail\, the efficient movement of people and goods around the early maritime Atlantic world relied on the strength of woven fabric and the means to repair it successfully. Sails underwent extensive wear and required regular maintenance and repair work completed by sailors onboard ships while at sea or by sailmakers while in ports. By focusing on ship sails as a technology of maritime movement\, sailcloth repair offers insights into the value of repair practices within maritime businesses. Using extant material culture and archival documents from New England’s many maritime collections\, this presentation traces the history of sail repair inside sailmakers’ lofts\, on the decks of ships\, and within marine insurance policies. \nEmily Whitted is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whose work focuses on early American history\, material culture\, and public history. Her dissertation project\, “Darned\, Patched\, and Mended: Repairing Textiles in Early America\,” examines early American textile repair work as an integral\, everyday practice completed with needles and thread to maintain fabric’s life cycles within homes\, ships\, and military camps. This special program for ages 3-11 & their families will focus on the magic of maple from start to finish. We will discover this tradition by observing trees\, tasting sap\, learning the tools involved\, and finally\, tasting the sweet product. We will make sure to have time to visit our barnyard animals! \nThis program is for families and will last approximately 45 minutes. Please dress for the weather as the program is held outdoors. Children over 12 may be better suited for our Adult Maple Strolls as the information at Maple in the Barnyard is geared towards a younger audience\, however\, all are welcome. \nLooking for a more adult tour? Sign up for our Adult Maple Stroll instead! \nSpace is limited for this event and pre-registration is strongly recommended. \nWe will have a food station open selling maple baked goods\, snacks and treats from 11:30-3pm by the sugar shack. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. DESCRIPTION:Sessions @ 10:45-11:30; 12-12:45; 1-1:45; 2:15-3:00 \nTrustees Member Adult: $9; Trustees Member Child: $9; \nNonmember Adult: $15; Nonmember Child: $15; \nChildren under 2 are free \nMaple Season is here! This special program for ages 3-11 & their families will focus on the magic of maple from start to finish. We will discover this tradition by observing trees\, tasting sap\, learning the tools involved\, and finally\, tasting the sweet product. We will make sure to have time to visit our barnyard animals! \nThis program is for families and will last approximately 45 minutes. Please dress for the weather as the program is held outdoors. Children over 12 may be better suited for our Adult Maple Strolls as the information at Maple in the Barnyard is geared towards a younger audience\, however\, all are welcome. \nLooking for a more adult tour? Sign up for our Adult Maple Stroll instead! \nSpace is limited for this event and pre-registration is strongly recommended. \nWe will have a food station open selling maple baked goods\, snacks and treats from 11:30-3pm by the sugar shack. The Farm Store is open 10am-4pm where you can buy our very own syrup. Make sure to stop by!
