SUMMARY:Witch Bottles:  Containers of Protection
DESCRIPTION:Witchcraft and folklore traditions are rich and diverse cultural practices that have spanned centuries. These traditions are deeply rooted in local folklore\, with each region having its own unique beliefs and practices\, including New England. Throughout history\, witches have been both revered as wise healers and feared as malevolent sorcerers. In this workshop\, we’ll focus on one tradition used as a form of protection from those malevolent\, unseen forces\, with a concentration on New England.  At the end of the workshop\, everyone will craft a Witch Bottle using antique bottles to take home. Explore the extraordinary series of events between June 1692 and March 1693 that led to the deaths of 25 innocent women\, men and children who were wrongfully convicted of crimes. More than 300 years later\, the personal tragedies and grievous wrongs that occurred still provoke us to reflect and reckon with the experiences of those involved. \nThis ongoing installation tells this story through tangible fragments directly tied to people in Salem and nearby communities in the late 17th century. A handwritten petition\, a carved loom\, a walking stick — each illuminates an aspect of individuals who lived through Salem’s witch trials and serves as a reminder of the real people impacted by these harrowing events. Old Hill boasts some of the most ornate early tombstone decoration in New England. From recently rediscovered graves of Black Newburyporters to the mausoleums of Newburyport’s merchant families\, Old Hill Burying Ground looks down on the city from its perch above Bartlet Mall.

DESCRIPTION:The Patton Family in New England Tour chronicles the life and legacy of one of America’s premier military families who resided here on Boston’s North Shore. On the tour\, you will see four rooms within the Patton Homestead that are filled with military memorabilia\, family heirlooms\, photography\, books\, and papers that comprise a collection known as the Patton Family Archives. These Archives are also an untapped\, unparalleled resource regarding the service and sacrifice of Maj. Gen. Patton and his troops during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and that of his wife\, Joanne Holbrook Patton\, on the home front. \nGuided tours are offered at select dates and times and are available only by advanced online reservation through the Wenham Museum. Tours are approximately one hour in length and include time for questions. Payment is required at the time of booking. \nFALL TOUR DATES\nSaturday\, September 28\, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.\nSaturday\, October 19\, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. \nTours are $15.00 for members of the Wenham Museum and $20.00 for nonmembers. Active Military and Veteran tour tickets are $10.00. Tour tickets also and include General Admission to the museum’s main location at 132 Main Street\, Wenham\, Massachusetts. \nGroups\nGroup tours are available for parties of 6 or more on a mutually agreeable date at time.
