Held in collaboration with the Gloucester Writers’ Center. \nMiriam Nichols\, Professor Emerita at the University of Fraser Valley\, will give this year’s annual Charles Olson Lecture\, presented at the Gloucester Stage Company in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center. Nichols will discuss Charles Olson’s early poems written during World War II and the ways he re-imagined the possibility of agency in the public sphere under seemingly impossible conditions. SUMMARY:Hidden Histories: Black History Month Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with “Quietly Hidden: A Story of Architectural Salvage and Discovered Craftsmanship\,” a lecture that honors and educates the achievements\, resilience and creativity of Black artisans. Senior Curator\, Christie Jackson will present her research on Long Hill\, with a story of early preservation\, the untold story of enslaved artisans\, and one family’s passion for history all combine. Her groundbreaking research uncovers Long Hill’s enriching history of the Federal-era ornamental carvings salvaged from Charleston\, SC and used in the Sedgwick’s 1921 house that was created in part by highly skilled enslaved craftsmen. \nLong Hill was the Beverly summer home of Atlantic Monthly editor Ellery Sedgwick and his family from 1916 until it was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1979. This lecture will take place inside the the historic home where participants will then join Christie as she gives a tour of the first floor of Long Hill to highlight the architectural elements included in her presentation. Participants should drive to the top of the hill\, and look for our parking lot on the left

DESCRIPTION:This Black History Month\, join Krystina Yeager of Historic Beverly at the Salem Armory Visitor Center to hear stories about the lives of local Black residents in Essex County based on new research that’s been uncovered. Through engaging hands-on activities\, we will explore parts of 18th century Black history\, culture\, and daily life that are often overlooked. Come feel fabric samples\, play period games\, and even learn how to do the minuet! \nThis 45-minute program is free\, family-friendly\, and open to all ages but geared towards kids 7+. Registration is strongly encouraged\, space is limited.

DESCRIPTION:History Alive will be debuting a new play\, In Open Rebellion\, directed by Samantha Searles and written by artistic director\, Kristina Stevick. History Alive welcomes you to be in the first audiences of this new show commissioned by Essex Heritage. \nCompany members will be portraying the Provincial Congress\, a secret meeting of patriots in Salem\, only a few months before the start of the Revolutionary War. In Open Rebellion explores enslaved peoples’ struggle for liberty\, and how it intersected with the patriots’ cause. \nThere are two performances: 3 pm and 4:15 pm on Sunday\, February 23rd at Salem’s Old Town Hall.
