See parts of the home as it was lived in\, as well as galleries featuring maritime trade\, the churches of Old Newbury\, and art works by Newburyport native Laura Coombs Hills. \nTours are on the hour\, 11-4pm\, Thursday – Sunday. Pre-order of tickets is encouraged as space cannot be guaranteed without tickets. Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour starts. \nTours are $10\, $8 for seniors\, $5 for those under 18. Learn to distinguish prevalent styles\, note changes that have occurred over time\, and determine what questions to ask about historic houses. \nThis approximately 90-minute walk allows ample time to walk and talk with your knowledgeable guide and other participants. Together we will walk through time using the lens of Newburyport’s fashionable old houses! \nWear comfortable shoes for uneven terrain and bring a water bottle. DESCRIPTION:It’s Base Ball\, 1864 style at Spencer Peirce Little Farm! These fun\, historically accurate games feature underhand pitching and no gloves are allowed. A ball bounced once and caught is an out! Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how this game was played in the 1860’s. The teams playing represent actual teams that played in New England during the 19th Century! \nGrass field seating: bring blankets and lawn chairs\nNo reserved seating\nWeather permitting\nThe Essex Base Ball Organization\, a non-profit “vintage” baseball group that plays baseball as it was played in the 19th century. We are based out of Newbury\, MA and have four teams in our organization the Essex Base Ball Club\, Lynn Live Oaks\, Lowell Base Ball Club\, and Newburyport Clamdiggers. One of our goals is to teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations. In addition to playing a full schedule of games every summer\, we run youth clinics in which we teach children the evolution of the game through hands on activities; we also give lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations.

On this tour of the area immediately surrounding the Cape Ann Museum’s Downtown Campus\, participants will learn about architectural elements and styles that arose out of specific socioeconomic and cultural circumstances during this critical 200-year period in the City’s development. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. Commanding commissions comparable to leading male artists\, Kussner stands among the “first wave” of prominent women artists—yet her rise also included lawsuits\, scandals\, and sudden turns\, including a surprise marriage to Charles du Pont Coudert. \nDrawing from her book The Miniature Painter Revealed\, Langone presents 70 images\, including color reproductions of Kussner’s rare surviving works\, and explores how the careers of Kussner and Laura Coombs Hills intersected within the elite world of Gilded Age portraiture—offering a local lens for Newburyport audiences.
